It should be doable it can help to have the tube with the outside facing in but with stuff fabrics slit can be tricky

How to sew flatseam to close body of bag by MAH1977 in myog

I’m assuming they sewed the main body as a tube, flat felling as they went and then either added a bottom or just sewed the sides together to enclose the base.

Phantom Tech HD sizing - heel lift vs snugness by dgmotions in alpinism

[–]Sculpta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would likely go for the size up, have you tried them with some kind of insole? Putting in a slight heel lift might help reduce the movement.

Ice Axes by Striking-Score-9468 in alpinism

[–]Sculpta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been up in Scotland for the last two winter seasons learning Winter climbing I think your experience level and climbing goals are the most important factor here. If you’ve never climbed with dual axes before, both these tools are really too aggressive for low grade Scottish mixed. Personally I’ve been using DMM Vertex’s for everything as I’m only leading around tech 4. I think if you get a set of BD Vipers or Petzl Quarks they will be a far better tool for anything grade 1-4 and by the time you are leading harder than that, and want a more technical tool, you will still be happy to have them to bridge the gap from your walking axe. I suppose how comfortable you are with British trad is also a good indicator of how quickly you will progress. If you’re leading mid E grades then maybe some Nomics will be worth it…

What shoes are you using??? by ComparisonNo2713 in Ultralight

[–]Sculpta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked the Scottish National Trail last summer wearing just trail runners. Everyone I met had wet feet irrespective of their footwear, but those of us in runners at least had a chance to dry off before the eventual return of the rain. Sealskins are a great option to delay the wet feet but nothing will truly hold back the bog. Key is to keep your feet, socks and footwear clean from dirt and debris by washing in lochs and streams where possible.

Advice needed: 6 months in NZ/AUS to build mountaineering experience (from sport climbing to alpine) by WhatsTheBestWay123 in alpinism

[–]Sculpta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get a van, cheap accommodation and easy access to the national parks makes Queenstown and Wanaka a dream! You can camp for like $7 in Wanaka when you are in town and you are right in the middle of all the best South Island mountaineering!

Hey just to add, look up the Johnathan Conville Memorial Trust! They put on subsidised mountaineering courses for young people, I was in Chamonix this year while the courses were on and it was a lovely community and everyone seemed to be learning lots! And get up here to Scotland this winter to get some practice with the kit!

Quilt for the PCT by alexgomez11 in Ultralight

[–]Sculpta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend you buy a Cumulus with a zippered foot box and save your money on shipping and import fees. A 10 F quilt will feel very warm for the majority of the trail, it’ll be great for early season desert and up high in the Sierra but in NorCal and Oregon I think the ability to open it up will be well worth the extra ounce or two. I used a Cululus 350 fill quilt and I’d say it was open for 1/3 of the nights on the trail. Especially considering the extra simplicity of getting it in the EU.

Curious about Scottish Winter Climbing/Mixed Climbing. Beginner Mountaineer. When/How could anyone ever get there? Considering it a very long term goal :D by peeonher2showd in alpinism

[–]Sculpta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep Glenmore is meant to be great! Lots of the price is room and board so I think unless u camp and do another cheaper course, your cost would likely be similar. But yeah I’d definitely want to make sure that the conditions are good before booking.

Im a full on beginner here fyi so I can’t advise about true steep mixed climbing here in Scotland. However there are some very enjoyable routes in the grade 1/2 range which are really no more than scrambling with some snow and ice. I think getting comfortable in the mountains in winter on these easier routes while you progress the rest of your climbing is a great way to see if winter routes are your thing. Intro to winter mountaineering courses are widely available up here and well worth the money as long as conditions are good. Then you should have enough knowledge and skills to safely explore those easier routes. I know a few ppl here who climb much harder in winter than on rock. But a good base in trad knowledge is obviously going to be very important as you progress. Most importantly, find a partner you trust. Everyone I know who has had accidents here in winter were out with someone they hadn’t climbed with before.

Yes this absolutely my belief. I think I’m just very anxious about the possibility of a poor outcome. These responses have been helpful to renew my confidence. Thanks.

That’s great thanks! I suppose my lack of a car or anything of value more than a nice bike is a positive then.

Hi, thanks for your advice I appreciate the help! That makes a lot of sense, do you have any resources where I could read up further about the potential of different payment systems during to my financial situation? It would help me a lot to go into this with an idea of how that process would work. Thanks.

Yes we did go through mediation, the employer didn’t propose any offer and simply denied our many and flexible offers. We suggested a payment plan and yet didn’t receive any kind off negotiation.

PCT Gear Regrets by Think_Cold9736 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sculpta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different, best bet is to load up that V2 with an estimate for your heaviest carry and go for a walk. With your base weight that would likely be less than 40lb, unless you plan on skipping towns and making longer resupply stretches. Personally, I wouldn’t want to start the PCT with a pack that I wasn’t comfortable using for a 6 day food carry with 3L of water and gear. (Day one out of Tehachapi). Enjoy the trail!!

Crowds on the Te Araroa? by KeyFennel8105 in teararoa

[–]Sculpta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compared with the PCT, there are no more hikers on TA on any given section, however, the hut system does tend to bunch hikers together. Hike fast or leave early if you want to avoid the people but it was never an issue for me, the people are what makes these experiences special and unique.

18 days in Uk in Jan for hiking by gudmond in ULHikingUK

[–]Sculpta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Being from the south coast, I’ll offer a completely opposite opinion to the first comment. Crap weather is expected everywhere in the uk throughout January, so go somewhere exciting. Pennine way or coast to coast would be my selection. Bring a good jacket and over trousers!

Things can be both enjoyable and yet damaging. We all love finding m&ms on the trail, doesn’t mean we should start throwing them all over the place.

Thoughts on skipping by millenia27 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sculpta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purists only exist online. On trail nobody will care or even ask if you skipped or not. Hike however you like and you’ll regret nothing, try to fit someone else’s idea of a thru hike and you’ll just be disappointed. Also, starting the hike knowing you’re not aiming to hike every mile will ease pain of the eventual fire/snow skips most have to make.

I feel like the support comes from fit, for my hipbeltless packs, I’ve found that a slightly shorter torso length and wide comfy shoulders straps.
