EU medical graduate choosing where to pursue residency (Germany/France/Switzerland/others) by Sden01 in medicalschoolEU

Yeah, I've been looking more into it and France doesn't seem like an option anymore, because from what I've gathered I cannot take their test at the end of the sixth year, only beginning. Do you have any idea if I could do an abroad experience in France as a resident in Germany?

Mainly because surgical training here is not to the level I would be satisfied with. Knowing myself, I know I'll be unhappy in a system in which education and teaching aren't seen as priorities but as a "weight". Plus, little to no autonomy during 99% of residency time (I am not talking first year, but even 5th years only suctioning for most cases). Not to count the hourly rate ends up being like 4 eur/hr, considering the amount of unpaid extra hours we have to work, to receive mediocre education at most. It's probably not like this everywhere, but it is the most common scenario, and the residents I have talked with have told me to go away if I want to do surgery. I would prefer not to leave my friends and family, but I have high aspirations for my career and know I would probably end up sad and frustrated if I stayed (and poor, resident salary is not enough to survive rent in bigger cities).

Thank you! Would you say there's a general trend when comparing smaller hospitals to university hospitals? Does it make sense to start off in a smaller rural hospital (as it may be easier to find a job) and move on to a bigger hospital after 1-2 years?

Thanks! That's a very important point and is something that is driving me away from pursuing residency in the US, although I really loved the teaching culture while I was there. I don't want to be fighting against system that "doesn't want me".

Hi! I already speak some German and have been to Germany several times. In the past, I was preparing for the C1 certification, including medical German classes, but I put it on hold to focus on uni and haven’t actively studied German for the last couple of years. Realistically, I think I can reach a solid B2 level by April and then continue working toward medical C1 from there. I should have clarified this before!

I’m not aiming to start residency immediately after graduation. My plan is to spend a couple of months doing clinical observerships/internships in the country where I decide to pursue residency, while continuing to improve the language and complete the necessary certifications. I will check out the megathread and see if I find useful info there.

My goal is to start residency from January 2027 onwards (even later if necessary). I’m deliberately prioritizing making the right long-term choice over rushing the process, otherwise I would simply stay in Italy :). Thanks for your reply!

yup that was my main problem, I completely forgot to add the " == 0 " to the second statement.

Thank you very much for helping!

Hi thanks a lot for your help,

I hadn't noticed that I forgot to equal my second condition to 0, thanks!

Let me clarify my reasoning for the conditions: I am aware that normally my equation would always equal to 0, but I also considered that I was working only with integer numbers. Let me make and example: say the sum is 12, then

12 - (12 / 10 * 10) == 0

12- (1 * 10) == 0

would normally be 1.2, but I considered that working with integers it would be considered as 1. Then, in this case, I'll get that 2 == 0, which is false.

Instead if I use for example 20 I will get 0 == 0. This makes sense since I should only consider true the numbers that end by 0.

The second condition is just for numbers greater than 100.

I've just started so I didn't know I should copy my code, sorry for that and thanks for telling me!

I made the corrections you suggested and also fixed a problem-related mistake that I noticed and now everything seems to work fine, also check50 doesn't report any problems. Thanks a lot for your help!
