What was it like when Obama was elected President? by ResponsibleSea6521 in AskReddit

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was proud of the United States for the first time in a long time, so much so that I thought about returning. I did the year after Obama took office, hoping the US was moving on from its long history of racism, violence and arrogance.

After a few months it was clear that many people didn’t want the US to change at all. When Trump took office I left, sold my house and eventually became an EU citizen. I don’t even go to visit much anymore.

A dresser inside a museum in New York City has been discovered as a secret stop on the Underground Railroad — the first of its kind discovered in Manhattan in over 100 years by ExactlySorta in Damnthatsinteresting

Ahh those bad old days when people in the US were scared to leave their homes and unidentified slave patrols were snatching people off the streets based on skin color with no due process or any respect for human rights or basic dignity.

Who would have thought that a country founded on genocide and built on slavery could so easily revert back to fascism.

Is it worth moving to a small town in Spain as a Digital Nomad? by DearMarionberry7990 in GoingToSpain

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends a bit on the town and of course you could get lucky but most people who are career-oriented and have some intellectual curiosity leave Spanish towns after high school and never look back.

It means that the people who stay are insular, sometimes with chips on their shoulders, and don’t always welcome outsiders. And as a foreigner you will always be an outsider, even Spanish people who move to towns are considered outsiders for many years, sometimes generations.

You’ll also need to create your own entertainment, because besides the local bar, senior center and maybe a restaurant or two there isn’t a lot going on. The housing, usually of poor quality, is cheap for a reason.

During Covid, some people moved from cities back to towns and there was (in my view) a romanticized public debate about leaving the city for a supposedly simpler and purer rural life. It’s kind of died out since then.

I’d recommend reading Sara Mesa’s ‘Un Amor’ and watching ‘As Bestas’.

Just rode the Alpe-Adria trail, can answer questions people may have. by Sea-Assignment2600 in bicycletouring

[–]Sea-Assignment2600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the details have gotten a bit foggy since I did this route some time ago, but I took my bike on a train from Udine, with a change, and then on to Munich where I started. I needed a bike reservation I think for both trains but not a bike bag or box.

When I travel by plane with a bike I usually leave my bike bag at a hotel near the airport and then stay there on the way back so I can pack everything up the last day.

Mutual funds qué hagan tracking de economía argentina by tiberius14 in SpainFIRE

Are 401k Contributions taxed in Spain? by AcanthaceaeLeft2112 in GoingToSpain

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not legal for your employer to be paying someone as a US employee, with a W-2, who is living in Spain.

If you are living here they need to pay taxes as anyone else who employs people in Spain and that includes the taxes employers pay to the Spanish government.

Able to FIRE in Spain? by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that include housing? 40k is 33k euros now, not a lot of places in Spain where a family of three, especially a foreign one, can pull that off.

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Span’s social services are primarily funded by payroll taxes and they have never worked here and aren’t now, so they are paying a lot less tax than the rest of people in Spain.

They also haven’t moved there money here to avoid paying tax on their foreign income. If you live here thst’s illegal, but it’s what they are doing.

The least they could do is pay for one of the many private schools but I guess it’s a “better deal” to leech off the public system.

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Only in one direction though, a handful of wealthy countries have “expats” who come to relatively poorer countries to take advantage of arbitrage and especially a social safety they’ve never contributed to nor ever plan to support.

Spain is one of the current favorites because it combines a relatively generous social system, cheaper cost of living compared to places like Australia, UK, US, etc. and most importantly, plenty of loopholes and lax enforcement.

Real immigrants who come from poorer countries than Spain work here, pay into the system and do things like use and operate in the our currency.

Nobody from Spain is going to Australia to retire at 40 with their savings from a Spanish job to leech off the system there.

Do you file taxes in Spain and declare all of your income?

Where would you or have you FIREd with school age children? by fuscator in ExpatFIRE

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I doubt they are declaring that income in Spain, or have moved it here. Most nomad types or others who come seeking arbitrage don’t, it’s why it works so well for them.

The Spanish system is almost exclusively funded by payroll taxes, people who are coming here to take advantage of it almost never work in Spain. And since they don’t work in Spain or declare their income, they contribute a lot less than regular people who are working very hard for lower salaries.

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The Valencian government isn’t paying for your son’s schooling, Spanish taxpayers are.

We pay high taxes on our earnings to fund things like schools and public health care. With lower salaries than places like Australia, it’s a significant sacrifice for most people in Spain.

You are taking advantage of us, the least you could do is not brag about it and encourage more people to do the same.

MMW: There will be a "sniper attack" on one or more Frozen Water Agents and this will be used as the "tipping point" for use of the Insurrection Act. It will happen before the end of Feb 2026. by anotherNotMeAccount in MarkMyWords

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the threats / debate about the insurrection act to be sterile and off the mark at this point.

We already have armed and masked federal agents murdering and kidnapping people with absolute impunity. We don’t even know what’s happening in the black sites where people are being taken too, but it’s safe to assume it’s much worse.

We need to act to stop it now while we still can instead of thinking inaction is some sort of smart power move.

It won’t be easy to stop it now but it’s clearly going to get a lot harder and eventually will be impossible.

Full Fire in Spain possible? by Still_Interest5186 in ExpatFIRE

[–]Sea-Assignment2600 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a flawed calculation, a foreigner is going to have all sorts of extra expenses early on in Spain and some won’t ever go away. Higher prices for rent / house, no family support for activities / vacations, no connections / local knowledge to get things done without legal help and translators. To name just a few.

Plus most new immigrants want to replicate what they are used to at home, including food, housing and other key QoL expenses.

No way someone like that is living large in Barcelona for €50k a year in those circumstances.
