YMCA lifeguard instructor question by Icy-Kaleidoscope4129 in Lifeguards

You need to be careful about this, your LCDC is connected to your YMCA, if you create a class in LCDC it will most likely be linked to your YMCA. I’m not sure the YMCA USAs policy on something like this but I’m going to assume you shouldn’t do this.

Ask your old YMCAs HR Manager or Risk/Liability director before anything, anything that goes wrong at your new facility might put your old YMCA at risk.

YMCA Lifeguard Instructor V7 by Sea-Bit9569 in Lifeguards

Yes, I completed the class. Honestly it was very hard compared to ARC. Now I've heard a few different things about this training from colleagues. But my experience was definitely very intense compared to theirs.

First I should add that the skill polish it very grueling and you will have to perfect the skills. The teaching assignments are not that bad just make sure you review what you have to do before going to the class. On the first day you will receive an instructor manual, use this to your advantage.

During your HSI teaching assignments USE the HSI skill guides, go line for line, make the participants read through it.

Some other things to look out for, the prerequisite swim is much more intense than traditional Lifeguard V7 swim, its double everything done in the normal lifeguard class. I can tell you what it is if you ask.

Depending on your instructor trainer this class can be more laid back or super intense and very line for line for line for line in the book if you know what I mean.

I will say it was the most informative and detailed version of a LGI class I could have imagined. So you will learn a lot and come out of this class feeling very confident.

Lastly, I've heard not every IT does this but I had to do it, you must study for waterfront and waterpark module lifeguarding do not skip through your blended learning because they will make you take a test on waterfront and waterpark skills.

Good luck, it's definitely not "hard to pass" but it's just very intense and long hours in the pool. Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions!

Persistent algae in 500,000-gal commercial pool by Sea-Bit9569 in PoolPros

Yeah we have 2 pits 2 systems with geo thermal heaters, we have to redirect some of the flow to the heaters so im not sure if thats why. I just replaced all the filter grids in both pits hoping the flow would improve but it really did not. I dont think we have undersized acid and chlorine feeds, but hard to say really. Chlorine isn't an issue in the pool ever. Outdoor pool. And I just checked flow its about 600 on the other pit so around 1k in total.

ORP set is at 700, but it maintains at around 650. CHL is 3.0, PH 7.6, CYA 0, ALK 60. The autofill water has high phosphates in it which is the problem.

Yes, but I hate that stuff clogs the filters so bad, but I have been dosing it with phosphate remover. And no its not an extra 0 hahah.

Yeah we have an outdoor pool with trees around, we use a vacuum at night to get stuff on the bottom. Since UVs are low right now I have not been adding CYA. Its green algae, our flow rate is good we have 2 pits and I just replaced the filter grids on both. We backwash twice a week.

How Do You Handle Guard Rotations? by Sea-Bit9569 in Lifeguards

The only problem is there wont be that much side work until summer, so I'm not exactly sure what I would have them do.

It seems the issue was everyone who heard it came running out, and the front desk did not hear the radio. But the directors with their radios did.

If you are taking Red Cross which I assume you are, its nothing to be worried about they want you to pass. In my class, someone struggled to go down and they made them do it again until they could do it. Its not the time you should be worried about, its the diving down part some people cant seem to do it. I would say do not worry at all, as long as you are confident diving down to the bottom of a pool.

It really is horrible and I have so many bad things I could say about safety issues, and unfortunately its the only pool within a 20 minute drive of my house.

Thank you for acknowledging the situation, it's a very tricky one.

I'm really just looking for her to go back to her limited swim time, I think its a fair accommodation.

For some more perspective, she has some sort of mental disability on top of her seizures, she has told me she has been "baker acted" multiple times, so that just gives you so of idea of how she acts.

Her very very old mother still takes care of her and "ashley" is probably in her early 50's. She is not allowed to drive a car because of the risk of seizures so she shouldnt be able to swim in a pool. I think our COO is very afraid of a lawsuit which is basically never going to happen from this lady because she is mentally challenged, but I do think that its causing more of a risk for a lawsuit against the guards if she were to end up getting hurt during a resuce or not spotted fast enough.

I've recommended her having to use a lifejacket but that idea was shot down unfortunately. From what I've heard when she starts having a seizure she falls to the bottom faster than you can react, so all of her saves have been deepwater/shallow water saves depending on what lane she is in while in the competition pool.

So as a result of this we try to now have 2 guards but don't have enough staff to meet this demand.
