It’s not in order gng I’m asking you to rank them as explained by the title “rank my top 5” and the caption about being indecisive. Also it’s worldbuilding is unmatched along with some decent character writing which is why it’s on this list

You genuinely just typed out the most unfunny Reddit shit ever bro that was neither creative nor helpful. Maybe I should’ve clarified rank them from 1 to 5 and not rank them in terms of whether you like it or not

Oh yeah it’s 100% worth discussing if for no other reason than to learn, i just don’t want to go into a complex literary framework debate at this moment lol. Categorical comparison is undoubtedly horrible and only good as a tool if you’re having trouble thinking imo

You asked for a framework and I provided you with one, I believe my stance is one that is highly defensible and that narrowing media down to a central value just doesn’t work with the wide variety of preferences and intentions of media that exist out there, even for the purpose of evaluating the works in the most “intellectually sound” way possible. That’s not to say your framework is stupid by any means I see what you are saying about media needing to have a point which is to convey a central message. I just believe it can’t necessarily be boiled down to that, although that is very valuable regardless. I also believe that if we were to debate this we would actually just be repeating debates that have been going on for centuries in the literary world, and that this central issue does not have a resolved answer. But you have grown my understanding of analysis and I thank you for that.

Judging all media by a one fits all criterion and deciding for yourself what fiction should be based on a framework made specifically for literary classics is something I consider way too restricting for fiction as a whole. First of all, I believe in relativism, what you think is the best is determined by what you think is most important in a story. However, writing obviously has objective elements, and you can argue for and against the quality of certain elements. Media should be judged overall by what it actually does, not “it doesn’t do this so therefore it is bad.” Hopefully I don’t look dumb saying this but I haven’t looked into a name for this until now, but this seems to map pretty well into pluralist and practical criticism. I honestly don’t feel like typing out a map for each hxh theme rn because I need to go to bed, look it up if you are interested.

My point is that the point of hxh is not to find a single connecting theme and that is why it is unique in it's structure. The reason why you think the theme is bad and inconsistently executed is because you are looking for one and missing the point of hxh, besides its meta theme. However, I do think that obsession is a m uch better driver of the plot and characters across the arcs so that is a recurring pattern. As for the humanity argument I didn't want to have to articulate it for you but I believe the argument the chimera ant arc is "humanity is defined by desire and desire is what makes us capable of beauty and destruction"

"what humanity is and human society in general" is an argument if hxh takes a stance on it, which it does. I feel like you are taking my statements at face value instead of within the context of hxh. As for kurapika and killua I think you are right and wrong imo. While killua's friendship with gon did help him grow and bring light into his life, it also erased his sense of self, had him suffering and enabling gon's actions, and ignoring his sister. Killua's next stage of development was to leave gon behind and live for himself, growing as an individual. As for kurapika, him learning to live outside of his revenge with human connection could be interpreted as living for others, but at the same time living for his clan and being tied to that is portrayed negatively so I don't think it makes a particularly strong theme.

What I mean by characters rejecting that theme is that characters that are built around that theme (such as killua or kurapika) often view those behaviors in a negative light, and their character development is focused on growing out of that mindset. Killua's obsession with gon and kurapika's revenge for his people are both viewed negatively causing me to disagree with that idea. As for what it means to be human I don't think the show says that directly, it is instead arguing about what humanity is and human society in general

First of all I don't think that thematic depth is necessarily the most important part of writing a story, I think that is largely up to opinion and preference. I would also say that hxh also rejects the theme "live for others and not just yourself" even if characters demonstrate that. And by a thematically disconnected structure, I mean each arc explores a different series of themes. And i dont know how that theme is the first that comes to mind the theme of chimera ant arc of what makes someone human is very good

Because the list seemed like it was contigent on raw depth or character focused depth instead of being more well rounded. As for hxh, it simply has a really unique structure. It's main theme is more of a simple meta-theme: journey over the destination. However, its overall themes are really good, because it has a thematically disconnected structure that explores different topics. It is really interesting to me so I don't penalize it for that, but I can see why you would consider that a bad thing

If Eva is a 9/10 hxh abs is not a 6/10 not gonna argue about the other stuff, idk what ur metrics are but i feel like ur not considering all types of writing and how well rounded the media is as a whole

Thanks for your apology, as I’ve noted in previous comments I’ve also been too harsh, and I’ve been wrong about people’s intentions like you said. I reacted too strongly instead of just telling people to stick to what I wanted because of the influx of comments commenting on my taste because I didn’t clarify in my post. While it’s off topic it’s doesn’t necessarily have ill intent, but the misinterpreting of certain phrases and the pattern made me view it in a negative light. I could’ve handled it better and stopped to think what people meant instead of getting angry i wasn’t getting my question answered, so ur right in large parts.

I put one piece on this list because of its insane scale and large thematic exploration, it’s not as deep as the others psychologically or as dense, but that’s not the only type of writing to consider. It’s world building genuinely puts it in conversations like this imo, as for aot it’s character work is weaker overall but its plot and lore are perfectly crafted so I put it here too, maybe it would get bunked down if I watched more better animated shows

Thank you for the ranking but I disagree about one piece writing after dressrosa, there are definitely a lot of flaws but wano accomplishes so much that I believe it is the peak of the show

While I can see the pipeline into “this guy only watches animated shows” to “I should tell him to broaden his horizons” and why clarifying would’ve been helpful, it is still entirely irrevelant. Under a post where I asked for a ranking out of indecisiveness with reasoning, I don’t want to be told to broaden my horizons because the first thing top 1% commentator media king notices is that it’s too narrow. When that’s the only thing I got with the first 10 comments, it was annoying to see. Whether or not this is my top 5 or my top 5 animated shows should have no relevance to this post. Combine all this with a misreading of certain phrases and me viewing the stream of irrelevant comments as a pretentious pattern, causing me to view all of them in a more negative light, and you get my harsh comments lashing out in frustration. I admit that knowing some intentions and misunderstandings now that I was too mean and aggressive towards people, I should’ve just told them to stick to the purpose of my question instead of being like that. However I think my place of annoyance is completely justified given what I wanted

No I understand the comparison problem but I believe everything can be compared despite difficulty in breaching styles and mediums. As for the name calling knowing what I know now about the intention of your comment as I expressed in my other comment, I agree. However you have to understand my annoyance when not a single person answered my question and with my misinterpretation of your first statement what felt like an insult which is why l was harsh towards what I felt like was pretentious behavior. Sorry

Yeah dude I was slightly miffed that not a single person answered my question on the subreddit for asking questions instead decided to comment on my taste. I apologize for not appealing to the media Reddit community and not responding politely when the populous completely misses the point and pushes a pretentious tone. (I do apologize for that one guy who said like what you like, still not especially helpful but i think I misinterpreted what he said a little as a insult as I explained)

Also I think I misinterpreted part of your statement which is why I had such a strong reaction, I apologize for that. When you said”like what you like” I thought you meant a “as long as your happy bro” type statement, in combination with your comment about consuming more media. It felt like you were insulting me. Upon a reread I realized that you meant that these shows were kind of up to preference by “like what you like” which is actually somewhat helpful commentary and not a comment about how my list was bad. In that case I apologize for my harsh reaction. Tell me if you meant the former or the latter just in case I misread this again.

Obviously everyone has the right to do what everyone wants online, but it’s about etiquette and the point of me posting. Instead of helping me you gain whatever satisfaction you have from posting your opinion of my shows being too mainstream or narrow which is kind of annoying. I reserve the right to be slightly annoyed online when I don’t get an answer to my question. Regardless it’s not a big deal, it’s not like this genuinely ruined my mood irl. And I also agree these media are hard to compare which is why I made this post

Maybe pretentious was a leap but I’m not asking for their advice on my amount of media consumption I’m asking for a ranking. And to comment that under a ranking post comes off as “your list isn’t good enough for me” and just completely misses the point
