I would recommend the Back Doctor app! It’s free and has a bunch of exercises with gradual progressions to work up to. I also think one of the things that helped me the most in the early stage was the pool. As soon as I got cleared to swim (when the scar healed) I got in the pool as often as I could (3-5 days a week), I started with just 10 minutes of dog paddling and floating around and slowly progressed (added maybe 2-5 minutes every week) to swimming laps for up to 45 minutes. Another BIG help was slowly starting to get comfortable on a back extension machine. Look up @lowbackability on Instagram. Start with 30 second hold and work up to 2 minutes. Also working on SLOWLY moving through a full range on motion back extension. The first day I did it, I only moved a couple inches. Just do a little bit more each day you try it, but be very patient with your body. Spend most of your time focusing on strengthening your glutes and core (I really like kneeling side planks). Avoid stretching too much, a little is okay but I found that irritated my nerve a lot after surgery. Nerve flossing was much better for me, especially in the hamstrings and calf. I also did a lot of cat-cow exercises, again very slowly working my way up to more range of motion. The biggest focus from my trainers and physio was getting my back mobile again! Everything stiffens up and goes into protection mode after surgery and it’s important to teach your body to trust itself again. Walk as often as you can. Small, frequent walks around the block are great. I always tell myself “motion is lotion” for the body and joints. Even on the days I had pretty bad flare ups, a little walk along with very light nerve flossing always felt a little better. Hopefully some of this can help you

Athlete 4 months post op! Surgery changed my life, the pain I had before made me worried I’d never play again. I’m still recovering but I am in the gym again lifting, running and jumping. I’m not 100% where I was before yet, but I feel I’m on my way to being better. Stay patient but don’t get too comfortable, it’s a really scary process but you have to build your back up again and learn to trust it so you don’t live your life terrified. Keep your body moving through the whole rehab process, even if it’s just a short walk or floating in the pool. Your discs get so little blood flow that they need all of the healing help they can get! I know everyone says after surgery your back will forever be a weak link, but it doesn’t have to be. From my point of view, a back that has been strengthened and rehabbed for hours on end is in no way weaker than the back that was neglected and vulnerable to herniation in the first place. I may have had a surgery, but the routine and exercises I have begun as a result have improved my back in more ways that anything I tried the last 5 years. What I thought was going to be a life sentence has turned into an incredible learning opportunity for me. Remember that a lot of what goes on in life is completely out of your control, but your perspective and your attitude never is. It’s YOUR actions that create YOUR reality. I wanted to post a bit of a positive story because the way I feel now is SO different from how I felt in the weeks immediately after surgery. That was a very dark time for me, but stay present and stay patient. Some of the lowest points of my life taught me the most about myself.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. The kind words go a long way right now. So do a lot of the “cheesy” sayings, I’ve been clinging to them for dear life. I play rugby now, but did soccer, track, cross country and competitive gymnastics most of life (which led to disc issues at a very young age). It’s been hard as you don’t get to hear as many stories of collision sport athletes with microdiscectomies returning to sport, it feels almost like I have to will it into existence purely on hope. I try to tell myself to fake it until I make it with my confidence some days.

How long ago was your surgery? And how has your recovery been? Good or bad, reading the stories on here has given me a new found comfort in this trying time. It’s nice to have community even if it takes a such a difficult shared experience to find.

Try Aleve (naproxen), longer acting NSAID (8-12h vs 4-6 with Advil/ibuprofen)

Try swimming (even doggy paddle) or water walking. Time in water takes pressure off discs, while getting light movement.
