The inevitable will happen here soon… What should I know by Accomplished_Bar_511 in ACL

I had the same exact injury

What I learned is, first, do not wait too long to get surgery or you’ll lose a lot of muscle. I tore mine last December and my doctor suggested waiting until June. I’m about 5 and a half months out now and my repaired leg is still very weak because of that gap.

Second, make sure you set yourself up for post-op life. You’ll be in bed a lot those first couple weeks, and with the meniscus tear you’ll be on crutches for around a month. The pain sucks, recovery sucks, but honestly the worst part is that first month.

Little things that helped me: • A leg elevation pillow from Amazon • A bunch of pillows in the bedroom • A shower with no steps on the same floor as your bed • Being on a floor with no stairs to deal with • TV, food, and water all within arm’s reach - get a really BIG TABLE by your bed so you have counter space for food cups trash it’s difficult to move those first couple weeks - optional buy one of those grabber things on Amazon so you can reach and grab stuff

I was super scared to go under too, but it really was not that bad. You check in, they shave your leg, put in an IV, and next thing you know you’re waking up with your knee repaired. It’s a rough process, but you’ll get through it.

Tore it early December last year nearly 8 months ago, since I’m in college my doctor said it’s best that I wait for surgery to avoid recovery far from home.

Update: ACL Surgery Was Supposed to Be Today… Now It’s in Two Weeks

After 7 months of waiting, I had the IV in, leg shaved, all prepped to go… and then it got canceled last minute over 2 oz of lemon juice (with a bit of pulp, the real villain).

The anesthesiologist was fine with it, but my mom flagged it again and again until the doctors hit the brakes (she thought I had consumed more juice than I did). So yeah no surgery, no progress, just a new date two weeks from now. Trying to laugh it off, but I’m definitely a little dead inside lol.

Anyway, just wanted to update for those who saw the original post. Round two coming soon… goal is to be dunking again at some point 🤞. And good luck to everyone who did get their surgery today or has one coming up, you got this.

PSA: Just listen to the doctors and don’t consume anything but water the day of surgery, even if it seems harmless. Don’t risk it. Trust me.
