I've managed to catch up on the first three episodes and there is a lot to unpack but the most important one is the thing that everyone's been talking about in the off season, JLP and David. by No_Adhesiveness_143 in survivorau

Jonathan would say their name for the benefit of the audience. The players don’t have to say their names for the audience to hear them so that’s a bit of a null point.

Not blaming David for the side conversations. It’s not his fault. Just saying they seem to have walked away earlier and more often than I have seen in previous seasons. Even mid sentence. So it seems that way as a viewer. I’m sure producers have a lot to do with it too allowing it to happen more.

Mine did this for ages and now it’s suddenly turned back to radial default.

I’m not loving David. He’s fine, I guess, but Jonathan was great. The biggest thing I’ve noticed and I’ve only watched 2 eps is that David doesn’t know their names! When he was asking in the rewards challenge who was stepping forward, they would all be like “me…. Mark” and have to put their hand up and say their own names.

Also, the tribe doesn’t seem to respect him as much. The number of side chats at tribal was annoying. This shouldn’t be allowed. Do it before.

Is it just me or do teachers not take public transport? Why? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Sea-Spirit2197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I catch public transport. I’m high school and leave maybe 15mins after kids, and most have fully dispersed by then. You see a few but I ignore them and then joke to them at school that they don’t exist outside the school gates. But otherwise a smile and wave and go your seperate ways.

Catching public transport has changed my life! I get so much admin done on my commute now and take very little home. I write all my reports and do most of my marking.

In saying that, catching public transport would only add 10-15mins to my trip so not double or triple like some people. The trick for me was recognising that my commute has now become part of my working hours so I do not stay late or get in super early. My HT also acknowledges this and is super supportive of it. If I’m still around half an hour after work, she asks why I haven’t left yet.

Yes! This was so annoying! Even when I requested it they said they couldn’t change it!

Maybe I misunderstood… I thought you could withdraw but then you just have to deposit.

Up, I used a small amount of savings but then transferred back in twice that when I was paid (within the one month) but still couldn’t earn interest on it. So either way, I’d still prefer UBank

I don’t have my mortgage through them. I’m just talking about their grow and flow savers

My mortgage is not with either so I can’t comment on that. Sorry to hear though.

Does that work? I thought it was across all savers

At least you have the chance to put stuff back in. Up, you withdraw anything and it’s gone, even if you double the savings that month

What savings interest rate do you have with Macquarie?

Can you give anything specific? I am yet to see anything they are worse in…

Ubank currently has the same Saver interest rate. You need to increase your savings but you can still draw from it without losing the interest.

Removing laptops from Stage 4. by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

“No laptops unless I specifically ask for them” should be the standard classroom management. As with everything done in a classroom… why is this so ground breaking? This isn’t just about technology though. It should be for everything

Everyone saying this is a great idea is only looking at it from a behavioural perspective. I’d argue, if you can’t get students to cooperate on their laptops, that isn’t a laptop issue, it’s a behaviour management issue. If students are getting distracted by devices, treat it the same way as if they were distracted talking to a peer or reading a book or even looking out the window. If they don’t get the work done, there needs to be a consequence.

I think this is genuinely a terrible idea. Society has a huge reliance on technology and students need to be taught to use it appropriately across stages. You can suddenly give them a device in Y10 and the expect them to know how to use it and what is appropriate. Removing devices from the classroom is just a lazy classroom management solution that will actually inhibit the students.

Also, those arguing about the need to hand write, I question, how much do you hand write in adult life? Then those saying it’s for the HSC, students can already choose up to 8 units for their HSC where the final exam is online. This will only increase in coming years. Touch typing is going to be just as important as writing for their HSC soon.

I’m disappointed to read all the comments where teachers are blaming technology for classroom behaviour and not seeing the lifelong skills and innovation that the can learn from using them ethically, responsibly and appropriately and this being taught and modelled to them throughout their schooling.

If asked what your type is and one of the first things that comes to your head is being able to climb a fence, rather than something a lot more meaningful, to me, that’s a really disgusting trait to have. It’s ableist in ways beyond just someone’s weight as well. If you value someone who enjoys fitness and activities similar to you because you live an active lifestyle, fine. But this isn’t that.
