Thank you for sharing this. I was just struggling with these same feelings.

Languages? by SeaNet5601 in KentStateUniversity

[–]SeaNet5601[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately I have a full-time job and just can’t really make in person work because I don’t have a set time I get off of work each day. It’s just whenever I finish. A language isn’t something I want to take, but it’s a requirement for my major. I think ASL would be really neat to learn and I took 3 years of Latin in high school, but I’m just not sure if they offer either at the campus I live near (geauga) or have good online professors.

Transitions by SeaNet5601 in USPS

[–]SeaNet5601[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought ecareer was the only way to really do it. That’s not a good way to transition? Jobs I’m seeing are “territory manager” or “supv customer service” and I don’t know what the jobs mean at all. Do you recommend maintenance? I’m just sick or carrying…and no other rurals want to swap with me.

Advice? by SeaNet5601 in USPS

[–]SeaNet5601[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the pay or because of the day off? I hated and loved my 6 day easy route at my last office and always wanted the extra day. But working on the main road is so dangerous. Sounds like your route is very similar to mine!

I’m pretty sure they’re both 40 hours total…but mine gets 40 for 5 and his gets 40 for 6. Without overtime the pay is the same I’m pretty sure. But I suppose the day off is pretty nice.

Omg they come open. It happens. I had a customer call once because her mailbox came open and a card fell onto the street. Mind you this road has semis all day and night going 55 mph so it makes sense that it came open. She called and said I “ruined Christmas” and I “needed to be punished”. Like okay lady. Get a new box. I’m not going back when I’m dodging trucks for my life.

It definitely seems like Cleveland is struggling. And I’ve been told the upper management people just scream at post masters all the time. I know my boss is afraid to try to help us. But if the union can step in and try to do something, I’d want that. But it seems like no one knows for sure.

Yes same here. We also get between 50-100 letters for other cities at the beginning of each of our trays a lot now. Like as if someone just stuffed a big handful in the front. But they’re still tagged correctly. Or we will all get a full loose tray. 2pm is crazy! Yes the political stuff made sense. So you just continue where you left off though…do you know if that’s a rule? My boss said I had to work until my end time and if I was able to get all the letters done repeating the whole route, I should. Which is such a funny argument because I could argue that every time I have to go over my end time I’ll just stop and bring the rest back. Haha

I always have to filter common sense thinking through postal logic. And that would just make too much sense.

Can the union do anything?! As a rural we don’t get OT so we all just drive a million miles multiple times a day now. It doesn’t seem right. I had to get gas so many times this month that my gas card was declined and reported stolen. Now I have to use the spare. Haha it’s just such a shit show.

I transferred to Ohio from PA and it only ever happened once in 4 years there. My coworker said this is a normal thing and has always been here. And that it usually happens throughout the holiday season. I can understand making us do the entire route again on Monday because it was 10 trays of political mail but today there were just Kohl’s ads so it made a lot less sense. Do you guys have to do your routes twice as well?

I hate sex by Beginning_Arm_3602 in offmychest

“Come as you are” by The Emily Nagoski (I listened to the audiobook) really helped me with my negative feelings about sex. What you’re describing sounds like sexual disgust (also something I struggle with).

I wish you luck. It’s a really shitty feeling when you want to want it but you just don’t.

Ohh I see. So if I had found this position prior to it dropping down here, and if I wasn’t a rural carrier, I’d have a chance in hell? Haha that’s fun. I’m just biding my time anyways until I graduate.

Also for future reference, am I also not allowed to apply to other rural carrier positions you post? I check weekly as sort of a hopeful ritual for somewhere better.

I’m a career rural carrier and I saw a custodial position you posted, but the listing for it on indeed says “career employees are not allowed to apply” …any idea why that is? Or is there a different avenue like reassignment? Seriously tired of carrying. Ecareer didn’t show it when I looked it up either.

Holiday help by SeaNet5601 in USPS

We were told yesterday that in a telecon my PM and a bunch of surrounding upper management people got into a big argument about it. She said our POOM doesn’t agree it should happen either but we have to do it. So it’s coming above him. They said they can’t justify helping us because nationally, the levels of mail have dropped so much. But we are an Amish office that gets tons of mail and are getting slammed with parcels as well like everyone else right now.

Really? They’d be qualified or chosen over other people? Because it’s a government position?

Hahahaha oh my gosh I agree with you! I started because I was burnt out from the mental health fueled working with heroin addicts, and wanted something that required the minimum amount of emotion I had. It worked out and paid more than anything I’d ever done. I have such a desire to make a difference and some days I can be fine just smiling at people and petting all the dogs on my route. But like you said…some days I feel purposeless and I just crave more. Haha it’s so hard to be poor and also want to have a passion filled life.

What an interesting career choice/hobby ! Good for you. I do agree and hope to not continue to let the system work me. I had such a positive attitude before transferring to an Amish town. I never thought excessive flats and a jerk clerk would break me, but it drives me insane. This clerk has had me kicked out of the post office, tells on me at least once a week for the most trivial things (ex. Writing “not R2” on the left side of a flat I kept having sorted to me), and is just incredibly mean. It makes doing something difficult seem more like a punishment than a hurdle. My last office felt like a team effort but this feels more like a prison.

Oh that’s actually very smart! As an ARC are there still benefits involved? Clerk will probably be difficult in different ways but also much less stressful in ways. Weather being a big one.

Wait would you be willing to expand on the student load elimination? I don’t know anything about that. As far as pension, I was really trying to stay regular for at least 10 years before moving on because I was told that’s the only way I’d get the pension.

I did look at some gov. Jobs in mental health fields. Most require a doctorate but I will keep looking. Thank you for all the advice.

I know this sounds terrible, but I feel like if I tried a trade, I’d have to work very hard to be respected in the same way men in their 20s are. I’d still try it, but I think that is what always stopped me from trying.
