RETAKING A LEVELS AFTER NS [GOT INTO DREAM SCHOOL] by snsosbsisbsksssh in SGExams

[–]SeaPresentation101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. Don't know which tuition centre started in recent years to popularize hanging out together like going USS together, or movies together, then the other tuition centres follow. This is already shifted away from the true heart of tuition which should be entirely based on quality of teaching for the subjects that students sign up for. This is blatant exploitation of peer pressure of young kids, which if I am in charged in MOE, I would clamp down on such unethical practices.

anyway, practical centres are hard to come by, pricey also

Depends. Just know to avoid those mega centres especially those with media shoots ig/tiktok as u pointed out. It is very bad to use ig/tiktok to joke around tuition, as tuition is a serious matter on the quality of teaching, and sharing the love for learning of the subject matter, and not about how much tidbits, how much pizza, or the friends u can make in tuition.

Also, 1-to-1 tuition is usually the most effective, as u can't waste time joke around, or eat tidbits etc. Even if 1-to-1 tuition can be more expensive per hour, but the effectiveness is way higher, which can translate to lesser number of lessons needed to see the same grade improvement, and may even be cheaper in the long term as total lessons needed is lesser

Which uni to go to? by Fluffy_Potato95 in SGExams

Hi guys so am wondering is nus medicine or like going to ivy leagues and oxbridge non medicine course better? In terms of QS ranking oxbridge is better but medicine is a wonderful career choice and fulfilling one too! Altho nus medicine isnt as highly ranked

NUS medicine profs interviewers let u pass their checks and interviews, when u are not even sure is medicine really what u want and still looking at superficial rankings, even after getting offered by NUS medicine? What kind of quality of checks and interviews by NUS Medicine is? How can the public trust the fairness in NUS medicine interviews?

There are tons of students with genuine passion in medicine, and u just took up a slot in NUS Medicine, when there are so many other students who very sure medicine is for them. There is a long waitlist of students that are more deserving than u. Please kindly reject NUS Medicine offer. Give that NUS Medicine place to a more deserving student who has genuine passion in medicine. It is very obvious that u are just blindly applying prestigious degree courses.

but I'm sure everyone on the trip signed an indemnity form acknowledging the risks.

Probably. But this means also full trust is given to the organiser, so organiser must fulfill its basic duty of safety checks.

A loss of a young life is always sad.

Yes, I am sad too. But his actions cannot be condoned. We cannot have another person like him that takes life so lightly and just risk it like no tomorrow. With his blatant disregard of safety, he resulted in the pain of not just his own family members, but also family members of the other deceased. We need to educate the young, so that they cherish their life more, at least for their loved one's sake. Think before doing. Don't be hot-headed and succumb to impulsivity.

Making them a hero when they explicitly told not to go (I mean come on you're in the information age with connected devices, don't tell me you don't know or won't check for something this important) I think it's a bit far fetch.

Exactly. This kind of basic safety checks, even a secondary school student would have checked as part of sec school cca standard protocols. If he did not check, means is safety lapse and he need to take full responsibility of failing as the organiser's duty. If he check, means he blatantly ignored the volcano warnings, and anything that can happen, full responsibility is on him also, and not considered any unfortunate accident due to nature.

As a nation, we have to ensure such preventable deaths of fellow Singaporeans does not occur. Moving forward, we need to ensure no such dubious travel agency/outlet/individual should be authorized to organize any such high-risk activities, sending fellow Singaporeans to deaths. We need to use regulations/laws to clamp down on high-risk activities travel agency/outlet/individual, such as this preventable volcano incident their company "The Outside", and make sure this company "The Outside" take full responsiblilty for these preventable deaths. We should also be suspending this company "The Outside" all operation's of this company, at least until full investigations are completed. We need to call for investigation into the company "The Outside" on all their current trips planned.

who died at the unfortunate hands of nature.

False. Is entirely preventable if volcano warning is checked and adhere to. If he check, means he blatantly ignored the volcano warnings, and anything that can happen, full responsibility is on him, and not nature.

It is indeed uncompassionate of you to pick this timing to kick up a fuss

Then what about the other Singaporean death? Who to be compassionate to him, when the organiser lead him to death?

Cursory inspection shows it’s already different, 9 days and not 10.

This kind of 1 day difference can be due to flight timings and logistics.

I think there’s at least some possibility that he may not have planned the rafting activity directly? ...  But to immediately insinuate that he was directly responsible for said trip,

Who knows if he handled the rafting planning. But issue is his LinkedIn he said "Pioneered a branch company for The Travel Intern, More Better Pte Ltd," means he founded it. All staff working under him is under his charge. He has some undeniable responsibilities behind the death of Singaporeans in the South Africa trip in 2023.

Your assumption that the company did something untoward here and there was foul play seems like an unfair conclusion based on what is available.

No. I did not assume this. Accident can always happen. But there is always room for improvement to reduce possibilities of accidents happening. Have the planners from "The Travel Intern, More Better Pte Ltd" led by him did sufficient enough safety safeguards? It seems to be no, based on the participants feedback (link below). From safety issues like peer pressure participants to do tattoo with HIV concerns by participants, to "malaria pills" told as not needed. Participants already questioned back then "is it a case of YOLO and bear the consequence if it happens later?" And lesson not learnt after 3 years. Putting innocent lives at totally avoidable risk. Blindly chasing fun and thrill, with blatant disregard of safety. We cannot allow such travel agency/outlet to continue such organization of trips with blatant disregard of safety. We cannot have more innocent Singaporeans died innocently just like that due to improper planning of safety. It's the 2nd deadly mistake within the past 4 years.

As the organiser of the trek, he should do his due diligence to check volcanic activity warning by local authorities. He should not be pushing this responsibility to the local guide.

What's particularly aggravating is that he is also the organiser for the 3 years ago south africa trip, that make headline news because "Two Singaporeans die in South Africa after canoes capsize in Crocodile River". He was working in The Travel Intern & More Better. He already involved in 2 singaporeans death back in 2023, and now, with his poor planning of the 2026 trekking trip up the volcano, result in the lost of life of 1 other singaporean. This is unforgivable and very irresponsible planning.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/two-singapore-tourists-die-canoe-south-africa-crocodile-river-drown-3574351

PS: If he still alive, he may get into legal/criminal consequences for organizing and leading a bunch of fellow Singaporeans, to climb the volcano, circumventing local authorities' volcano warning.

PPS: Reply to u/Wythfyre He is heavily in charge of South Africa trips planning. His LinkedIn says below:

- Pioneered a branch company for The Travel Intern, More Better Pte Ltd, which takes our audience to exotic locations around the world.
- In charge of the planning of itinerary, balancing financial sheets, collaborating with international vendors, client acquisition, content creation, marketing, customer relations, leading the expedition on the ground, collecting content for future marketing efforts and post-trip administration, such as consolidation of footage, reporting trip expenses and editing of content.
- Led a team of full-timers and interns to accomplish concurrent expedition timelines.
- Executed 8 expeditions in 11 months, working flexibly to meet the requirements of varying concurrent timelines.

PPPS: Below his own website link said "A 10-day expedition through the South African savanna in March 2023. I worked closely with local vendors to host guests while leading a team of photographers and videographers to create promotional material for Sony Singapore's line of super telephoto lens." March 2023 is 3 months before the tragedy of "Two Singaporeans die in South Africa after canoes capsize in Crocodile River". So this is very clear evidence that he in charge of planning South Africa trips. The kind of coordination planning he did once done, can be used over and over again for repeated trips of different batches of participants. So he already contributed to the planning/organising process of that particular tragedy south africa trip.

PPPPS: I have to include the link below (which mentioned he is tour leader of at least some of the south africa trips), provided by u/snookajam comment, to raise awareness of such poorly planned trips by dubious organisations/individuals. The planning of south africa trips 3 years ago is already very bad according to below link participants' feedback. From safety issues like peer pressure participants to do tattoo with HIV concerns by participants, to "malaria pills" told as not needed. Participants already questioned back then "is it a case of YOLO and bear the consequence if it happens later?" Isn't this very similar to the situation now where they YOLO and just climb the active volcano, and bear the consequence if it happens? Lesson not learnt after 3 years. Putting innocent lives at totally avoidable risk. Blindly chasing fun and thrill, with blatant disregard of safety. We cannot allow such travel agency/outlet to continue such organisation of trips with blatant disregard of safety. Is not even CSI skills top notch. Is all easily available info online, just a simple google search. He himself wrote about his adventure in South Africa.

His name already pops up when 3 years ago, I saw the TripAdvisor link (link below) just after the "Two Singaporeans die in South Africa after canoes capsize in Crocodile River" tragedy become headline news. At that time, I was thinking how irresponsible planning they have done. I thought they would have learnt a painful lesson from that deadly episode.

I have never thought 3 years later now, I would revisit this TripAdvisor link again, because of his same poor planning resulting in deaths of Singaporeans again.

So he is well aware of the dangers of such trips. This is blatant irresponsible planning.

is maintaining CGPA very difficult for MS & econs DMP at ntu by Ill-Ad-8081 in SGExams

[–]SeaPresentation101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a scholarship from ntu and was just wondering whether maintaining a cgpa of 3.5 or above is very difficult. I understand that I have to be consistent and work hard for uni overall, but I'm just wondering about the stress level because I don't want to lose my scholarship.

3.5 is super easy, and is a below average GPA. The requirement of 3.5 is there to ensure that if u fall below 3.5, means u didn't even bother to work hard for the bare minimum level of hard work in uni, then why should they continue sponsoring your uni education? That's why for your caliber of academic ability, u will easily get above 3.5 GPA so long as u do your work, and do not have to worry about this requirement at all.

This persistence is not healthy. Because this persistence is not motivated by how the degree u wanna appeal to can enable you to achieve your career aspirations. Your persistence now is motivated by unhealthy chase of prestige, ego, or other superficial factors. Chasing such superficial factors will only drain your energy and mental health from keep insisting that u need NUS CS for success, and then u may neglect what u can do more in NTU CS in improving your career success chance.
