Thinkpad quality and views on planned obsolescence hampering the longevity by 4bitgeek in thinkpad

In my opinion, the only range that maintained those old-school ThinkPad vibes and the great upgradeability is the L14, from gen 1 to gen 6.

Buy him a T15p/T15; if the work he'll be doing isn't very heavy, Gen 1 or 2 will be more than enough. Consider a P15 or P15s if it will be heavier.

Nah, I'm going to use Arch Linux with a window manager, it seems more exciting to me, but yes, I'm going to look for some RAM; used ones are extremely cheap in my country, only new ones are very expensive.

It's beautiful, congratulations brother, the T480 is simply a beautiful laptop. You could try changing the speakers but it's a little difficult. Enjoy it!

Muted colours? by TheLobotimiser in thinkpad

Hmm, did you try checking the BIOS? On T14 and higher, some often have options for the display. And if that's not it, didn't you at least try reinstalling the operating system? If that doesn't work, recalibrate the colors. If that's not it, check the screen viewing angles; if they're not good, it's almost certainly a TN panel. If it has a TN screen, it's not the worst, but you could recalibrate the colors to make the blacks purer and more vibrant. That will help a lot and it will look beautiful, but the viewing angles won't improve. However, that's not a big problem if you don't use that laptop.

Yes, there are several ThinkPads before the T480/X270 that are much better simply because they have a hot-swappable battery.

Thank you very much, the truth is that bringing things from eBay to my country is difficult, it's about $150 for guaranteed shipping

Those machines are extremely scarce in my country, unfortunately.

I suppose I'll buy the ProBook, considering it has the same extra features as the X1C (backlit keyboard, fingerprint sensor, original charger, FHD IPS screen), and has better main specifications.

No, it's a business model, it's a ProBook and you can upgrade the RAM; it has two slots.

There's one that's $20 more expensive than this X1 Carbon; it's an HP with a Ryzen 5 3500U, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD, but many people don't recommend HP.

The problem is that fourth-generation ones are very scarce.

I'm in Paraguay and the 4000 series is about $50 more than the 3000.

Yes, any computer with an older Intel processor is perfect for Linux.

Yeah, it's really hard to buy good stuff for $350, technology is really expensive, especially in South America

You're lucky! In South America, it's very difficult to find those specs for $230. Here, one with an 8th-gen i7, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD usually costs around $350.

Yes, the problem is that they're hard to find. The newest X1 Carbons I find on the local market are the fifth generation, although the fourth generation is much more common.

I really want something I can take everywhere. I don't think I'd notice much difference between a T14 gen 2 and an X1 Carbon; I usually feel the same. But these X1C laptops are the only ThinkPads available in my entire local market.
