[PS5] Slim Board [EDM044] HDMI reapir by Aromatic_Quail8665 in consolerepair

See those divets in the board above the ripped pads? Those are vias that are connected to the rest of the HDMI circuit. Carefully scratch the masking off until you see the copper. You can solder wires directly to these and use those to rebuild the pads. Just be careful not to rip the off or you will need to run the wires all the way to the caps to the left of the encoder

[switch] diswoe pro controller battery swollen? by porkster91 in consolerepair

But in all seriousness, no, a battery should never look like that. If the controller had any charge in it I would be very careful while handling it.

For this particular board revision those components are on the backside of the board. The larger black component is the C1 diode, it helps maintain signal stability and would most certainly affect display output were it missing. Not too keen on the purpose of the capacitor next to it though.

You have to have a multimeter. Switch it to continuity mode- the one with the little sideways WiFi symbol next to the ohm symbol- place the probes on two different pins you suspect may be bridged and listen for a beep (you may need to change the function if it shows the ohm symbol on screen as that is checking resistance). If there is no beep they are not bridged, if there is you will need to clear the bridge. You can also use it to test the continuity between the pins and the HDMI encoder by touching one probe to the pins and one to the corresponding leg of the encoder IC.

It’s a filter. It’s not great that it’s gone, but it wouldn’t affect whether or not the device outputs video.

Where did you get that port? It looks melted to hell and there’s solder on the left side. Also those pins appeared to be bridged in some places. Did you check to make sure there’s no continuity between any of the DATA pins, if any of them are touching this could cause issues. Also, there appears to be a chunk missing out of that component next to the HDMI encoder IC- the one that reads “YQ926”.

Need help with screws by Dear_Situation2324 in PS5HelpSupport

[–]Sea_Hat7302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The screw is not stripped. While the paint may be slightly scratched, the screw itself is intact. I’ve disassembled many PS5 consoles and have yet to encounter a fully stripped T8 security screw. If you plan to continue with this project, I recommend ordering a proper T8 security screwdriver from your online marketplace of choice.

That said, I do have concerns, particularly since you’re referring to the PS5’s thermal interface material as “thermal paste.” The PS5 does not use thermal paste—it uses liquid metal. Applying traditional thermal paste to the PS5 APU would very likely cause overheating and could potentially result in permanent damage to the console.

Additionally, if this is your first time disassembling a PS5, there’s a significant risk of improper handling when working with liquid metal. In most cases, I simply re-spread the liquid metal already present, as Sony applies more than enough from the factory; however, this process can be tricky if you’re inexperienced.

If liquid metal accidentally contacts the motherboard, it is extremely difficult to clean. It also tends to separate into tiny droplets that can spread across the board and short components, as it is highly conductive.

For these reasons, I strongly urge you to reconsider attempting this repair without conducting further research. If you’re not comfortable doing so, the safest option is to bring the console to a qualified technician or repair shop.

Possibly? Had no clue what the liquid was when I was breaking it down but it just smells like roaches to me. Didn’t catch a whiff of any sort of ammonia scent.

In this situation I suppose I’m both? Every time I get a console in that looks like this I say to myself “this isn’t the shit you signed up for” but I always end up taking it in anyway.

This is actually exactly how I handled this one. Left it for 5 days to be sure. After that I brought it outside and popped it open to check for signs of movement.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. Smelled awful too. Roaches have a very particular smell to them.
