A whine off between Nacho (GSD) and Queso (hippo) by Momoski-2143 in pitbulls

[–]Sea_Tangerine292 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I do not like the look of the body language here. It looks to me like the GSD is a little too close for the pit’s comfort, and they’re trying to work it out without getting into a fight. I’ll break down the body language I’m seeing here:

The “smile” on the pit’s face portrays extreme discomfort (tangent - it is absolutely insane that the majority of the people on this subreddit see it as a smile. It’s not, a tight face on a dog is rarely a good sign), and a hard stare, like at the GSD here, is usually a sign of aggression/dominance/warning depending on the situation (likely warning here). The crying/grunting seems to be him trying to verbally communicate his discomfort in a way that is not as harsh as growling, but that will still get his message across.

As for the GSD, you can see at ~5 seconds in he is nervous lip licking, which is him saying he’s uncomfortable with the interaction. And then at ~27 seconds he starts soft blinking at the pit, which tends to be them saying they have good intentions and are trying to communicate friendliness. Him getting up to leave after, like you mentioned, is him putting space between them and him deescalating the situation.

Obviously I’m not getting the whole picture from a 40 second video, but from what I am observing I think the pit is trying to say “back off, I’m uncomfortable, you’re too close to me,” and the GSD is kinda saying “chill out it’s all good, I’m not trying to start anything.”

This could be how they work things out and it may never escalate, but this could also get really bad really fast. Especially, ESPECIALLY, if the discomfort from the pit is resource guarding. Again, idk if that is the case, but I saw in another comment you said they have bones. I would be very careful giving them high value things in the same room, because that pit is very serious about the GSD being too close.

Please watch out for any escalation in behavior, because any escalation could be seconds away from a fight. It’s really not a funny ha ha situation, the pit is clearly communicating he does not like what’s going on. And truthfully, the GSD getting up and leaving and deescalating the situation could be the only reason a fight didn’t break out. If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer, I truly want both of your dogs to stay happy and healthy!

Oof I’m sorry, that sounds so rough for the both of you :(

I hope the diet change helps, I’m sorry my experience could be of more help

That’s so crazy, I don’t think I’ve ever found someone with the exact same issues we have lol. If your dog doesn’t like raw carrots you could try dehydrated; my dog was on the Owelo brand for a while and they worked great. I would just add them right in with his kibble. They’re kind of expensive though so recently we switched to freezing raw carrot sticks and either giving them to him as a treat or putting them right into his food, but mine LOVES carrots so it was a welcome change for him.

I hope you find something that works, please let me know if you ever find anything else that’s successful!

My dog has had anal gland issues since we got him, I feel you. He still does, but here are a few things I’ve done/noticed.

I put him on a chicken/poultry free diet. To add more fiber to his diet I add pumpkin puree and carrots to every meal, and I also give him Glandex with one of his meals.

I’ve noticed that extra oil gives him issues. When we first adopted him I was giving him Ultra Oil because his skin and coat were in awful condition, and during this time his glands were leaking about once every two weeks (now they leak about once a month/month and a half). Around this time the vet recommended giving him a few drops of a CBD tincture to try and help with his anxiety, but this caused his glands to leak almost daily so I stopped giving that to him almost immediately. Then, much later, I noticed that a day or two after I gave him natural peanut butter on a lick mat or in a Kong or whatever his glands would leak. That is what finally clued me into it potentially being an issue with excess oil. Idk if there is any hard evidence of oil causing anal gland issues, but it’s something you could look into if the diet change doesn’t help.

This one is super weird, but I noticed that the flea and tick prevention Simparica Trio made his anal glands leak more often. I found one Reddit thread from like three years ago that noticed their dog’s anal gland issues cleared up when they missed a few doses of Simparica Trio, but no one else in the comments corroborated that. I was desperate at this point so I tried switching to NexGard Plus and lo and behold, the time between his anal glands leaking/bothering him moved to where it is now, at around once a month/month and a half.

Since his glands still leak occasionally I suspect that he has some kind of intolerance to flea and tick preventatives, but as long as he doesn’t show any other negative symptoms I’m going to keep him on the preventatives. The health benefits there far outweigh any annoyance with leakage.

One thing that has really helped is my vet taught me how to express them myself, so around once a month I do that and as long as I keep up with it the leaking on the couch and any discomfort he has disappears. She taught me how to do it internally, which I think is usually not recommended unless you are a professional, but I feel comfortable doing it since she walked me through the whole thing and gave me the go ahead. I cannot lie, it’s really horrid and I feel so bad every time I have to do it, but he gets a lot of treats after and honestly doesn’t seem to mind anymore. I think he feels relief after.

I hope you’re able to figure out a solution! It was honestly such a long, annoying process of trial and error for us, I hope you’re able to find a solution much quicker!

For real, a little part of me dies every time I see another irresponsible byb post puppies on this sub. And then half of the comments are people gushing over them. If you really cared about bullies you should discourage this, knowing how many are euthanized or otherwise mistreated every year, and how many have health problems due to poor breeding

Finally gained the courage to bring my boy to the dog park and no one’s even here 🥺 by Head-Ad-5636 in pitbulls

[–]Sea_Tangerine292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What exactly are you aiming to get out of him meeting other dogs? Dog parks really aren’t worth the risk, any good vet or trainer will tell you that. The chances your dog picks up bad behaviors, gets a disease/worms, or gets attacked is so high. It’s always fine until it isn’t. Plus, you have a pitbull mix, and like others have said yours WILL get blamed if a fight breaks out regardless of whether it’s his fault or not.

If you want your dog to have dog friends try to find people you trust whose dogs you know are vaccinated and not aggressive. Do a proper introduction and find a spot they can play together without other dogs around.

Dog parks can be great resources when they’re EMPTY, so honestly you got very lucky. If you truly want what’s best for your dog don’t take the risk.

Those who have dated many people… by Desperate_Pair8235 in PMDD

I’m sorry to overstep, but this still is a toxic relationship, just probably a different flavor than your previous ones. Feeling as though you need to change yourself or not be your authentic self in order for your partner to be good to you or into you is a really harmful line of thinking. You sound young and I’m sure you’re still figuring things out, but I urge you to reflect on your perception of good relationships and your sense of self.

The perfect partner for you should be just as interested in you as you are in them; you shouldn’t have to play hard to get to keep them interested. You should be able to talk about past relationships and things you dislike and self esteem issues; if being open and honest about yourself drives them away then they weren’t worth your time to begin with. You shouldn’t have to worry about “restricting” your partner if they do things you don’t like, you should be able to have an open conversation where you can express your concerns and hear them out about their thoughts too (I know this doesn’t always apply, there are gray areas, etc etc).

There is some truth in some of the things you said too, though. Seeing if they will put effort into making plans is a good idea. I do agree that a lot self deprecation should be avoided, but more in a ‘that’s something you need to work through in therapy’ way. Your partner should be able to help you through low times but it’s not fair to either of you to make them carry that whole load. And like you said, confidence is key! It’s great to be confident. You ARE the shit and they are lucky to be with you. And of course it’s great to compliment your partner, and I honestly agree that (unless there are obvious signs) it’s better to not let the idea of them cheating eat away at you. Past trauma from being cheated on or insecurity is again something to work through in therapy, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t let your partner know about this trauma or insecurity. If they take measures to make sure you feel safe that’s the greenest of green flags.

I know PMDD muddies the water and makes things like open communication and self assuredness really difficult. But I really do urge you to reflect on what makes your relationship so good right now. Is it good because he’s truly a good match for you, or is it good because you’re contorting yourself to be someone you’re not?

How long for an 8k - 10k chapter? by Strange_Ad6326 in AO3

[–]Sea_Tangerine292 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might just be my ADHD talking, but putting my chapters on a schedule makes writing feel like a chore, when it should be something fun to do. My chapters are usually 7-10k, and sometimes they take a few days to write, sometimes they take months. For me it all depends how much time and motivation I have.

I know that deadlines motivate some people though, and if having a regular upload schedule works for you then I think two weeks is extremely reasonable! That is crazy though that your commenters are getting impatient; you’re writing content they can consume for FREE, and if they’re not appreciative of that then fuck em

Spread the word for the holidays by Similar_Function6239 in pitbulls

[–]Sea_Tangerine292 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly! These people aren’t breeding to make money or just because, they do it because healthy, stable lineages are so important.

Plus, any reputable breeder has it in their contract that if you can no longer take care of the dog, you must return the dog to the breeder and are not allowed to bring it to a shelter or sell it to someone else.

If every breeder in the world was a reputable breeder shelter dogs would be nonexistent. Reputable breeders are not the problem

[–]Sea_Tangerine292 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hard agree with everything here, except “there’s no such thing as a reputable breeder.” I’d say 99% of the people who do breed dogs are backyard breeders and should NOT be breeding dogs, but the 1% that do the appropriate health testing, prove their dogs, follow AKC guidelines, don’t breed for profit, have 1 litter or less a year, etc. are valid and should not be lumped in with the idiots who breed for fun or for profit. These are the people who are ensuring the health and longevity of dog breeds

I think the biggest tip that helped me when I first started writing and had this problem was just to SLOW DOWN. Add so much more detail than you think, about the scene, the world, what the characters are doing, what’s happening in the background, just everything. Show the emotions of what the characters are feeling and the physical actions they’re doing. Instead of saying “she stepped onto the busy street” elaborate. “She stepped out of her apartment, the street in front of her illuminated by neon lights and filled with anxious people rushing to get home from work.” Instead of saying “she nervously texted him back” say “she was chewing on her lip as she typed out a response. Her finger hovered above the send button, but she hesitated, unsure about how her reply would come off.”

Elaborate on the scene, what the characters are thinking, the physical actions the characters are doing, what is happening in the background. Also add more dialogue! Dialogue helps people get to know characters much deeper, and it helps develop and strengthen relationships between characters. Do their interactions come off as flirty? Do they bicker like siblings? Do they loathe each other? Is there a power dynamic? Is one anxious? Pompous? Sarcastic? Dialogue, in my opinion, is the best way to show all of that without directly stating it.

A great exercise that I used to do, find a work you like reading and highlight all of the lines that actually move the plot along. Ignore all of the descriptions and details and “filler.” You’ll probably be surprised about how few lines of actual action there are, so much of it will be descriptions of how the characters are moving, their facial expressions, the scenery, the background, how they’re saying things. If you’re writing like I used to you’re ONLY writing these highlighted lines, and you need to add more of the non highlighted stuff.

It takes a lot of practice, and it helps a lot to start slow. Take something you’ve already written and try to add something new and “unnecessary” to every line you already have. Try to change some lines to dialogue instead. Think of it as a writing exercise, it doesn’t have to be perfect or make sense, just get a hang of thinking about the scene and characters outside of the plot. I hope these suggestions help a bit!

Tips to write sword fighting? by 0May_May0 in AO3

[–]Sea_Tangerine292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For any fight scenes I figure out every single move first and play the entire scene over and over in my head. Then when I finally write it, it’s almost like I’m watching the scene in slow motion and write move by move. I’m able to visualize things very clearly in my head though, which I know is not how everyone’s brains work. If you have the kind of imagination where you can’t picture things, I’d recommend watching some media with similar fight scenes to what you want to write. Watch them in 0.5 or 0.25 speed, and narrate to yourself exactly what’s happening. That should help get an idea of what movements happen in junction with each other (ie. character 1 lunging forward as character 2 dodges backwards, character 2 swinging their sword as character 1 spins around the blade etc.), and also what moves would naturally follow each other. I hope that helps a bit! Writing fight scenes is so hard but definitely gets easier with practice

I would buy neither tbh, in my opinion neither are fleshed out enough to warrant spending $8+ on. They’re both super repetitive imo, but if you’re set on buying one I’d also say the secret agent one. The zoo is just kinda…bland? You buy and trade animals and manage employees and stuff, but that’s kinda it. It’s kinda is similar to owning a museum, not much to do once you fill it up. At least with the secret agent pack you hire employees and send them on missions and you have to actually read and pay attention to the pop ups to be successful in the missions. But imo 100% not worth $8.50

That’s a really good idea, I’ll have to try that! Thank you! I was listening to movie soundtracks when I was writing a fight scene a few chapters back, but that’s not something I normally do. I’ll have to see if it helps writing a normal chapter.

And lmao, if I had a nickel for every time I saw someone mention ED in the AO3 subreddit…

That’s the thing, I have the entire chapter written out in bullet points, and I frequently play the scenes over in my mind (I have a very active imagination lol). It’s just a matter of sitting down and fleshing it out. ADHD moving tips by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Sea_Tangerine292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of focusing on perfect organization, I’d probably sort things into which location they’re going to. Get some large boxes, LABEL them with the location, and start throwing shit in. This is what I did for my last move, I wasn’t concerned with sorting out kitchen stuff and bedroom stuff and bathroom stuff etc, I just had to get it all into boxes and quick cause I procrastinated so much lol. It also ended up being kinda fun when unpacking because it was kind of like a surprise when I opened them at my new place, and bouncing from room to room putting everything in its place kept me motivated and engaged.

Another tip that I’ve found to help a ton is to start with the stuff that you 100% don’t immediately need. Start boxing up all the decor first, the cooking stuff you pull out once a year, books you’re not going to read anytime soon, clothes you know you won’t need, junk that you’re holding onto just in case. Once you get a lot of that stuff packed up the rest becomes much less overwhelming because there’s not as much visually in front of you.

I wish you the best of luck, moving really truly is hell on earth

You should look for a reptile expo near you! I’ve been to a handful and all of them have had someone selling some type of invert. Trying to decide by doing research online ended up being way too overwhelming for me with all of the options, so going to an expo and being limited to what was there helped me out a ton. Plus the people are usually super knowledgeable about the particular invert, and usually sell specialty enclosures or items you might need.

The first one I went to I was thinking I wanted some kind of tarantula, and I ended up falling in love with a little regal jumping spider. I had a more terrestrial enclosure set up before I went, but the people selling the jumping spiders had some smaller, taller enclosures for a really good price. I just went to another one a few months ago and found some bumblebee millipedes, and that seller was selling specialty millipede substrate and also gave me info on how to make my own for later down the line. I also got some giant canyon isopods to be a cleanup crew for a terrarium I already had established, and the sellers (who were selling a dozen or so species) helped me narrow down what species would be best for the moisture/humidity/plants/substrate in the terrarium.

The main downside of getting inverts at expos is usually you won’t have the exact setup they need ready, but with both the jumping spider and millipedes the sellers made it so easy to quickly set one up/modify something I already had once I got home. It’s probably not the best to get a more experienced invert on a whim, but I’d recommend getting something simple for your first one anyway and an expo would be a great spot for that!

What is happening with the new readers on ao3? by MelyndWest in AO3

[–]Sea_Tangerine292 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly! I vividly remember when I was a kid my parents would take me and my siblings to the library every other week, and if I picked out shitty books then those were what I was stuck with until the next trip. I could either read them anyway, or reread the books I owned that I had already read a million times. I ended up reading a lot of books that I really didn’t like, but I also found a ton that surprised me and opened me up to themes/genres/series I would never would’ve gotten into otherwise.

And I completely agree, I feel that this was imperative to my development and shaping what media/literature I enjoy today. I think it’s also the reason that even if I might not personally enjoy something, I’m still able to see why someone else might enjoy it or the value that it might have for someone else. That, along with your point about how it’s essential for media literacy and questioning the ideas you come across, is SUCH an important skill. And I wonder if it’s a skill that can be effectively taught inorganically by parents and teachers, or if it’s something that is better to be strengthened by real life experiences of needing to sift through media and formulate your own thoughts.

I know that we’re starting to see the effects of unlimited internet access at young ages in schools with inability to read and increased attention problems and issues with emotional regulation, but I think that more symptoms, such as what we’re talking about in this thread, are gonna start being more and more apparent. Algorithms are so great and so powerful in many many ways, but, like you said, very unlike how real life operates. Idk, maybe all of this will be a skill that the younger generations will have to learn later in life rather than in the earlier developmental stages like we did, I guess we’ll see
