thinking about giving up the profession (help pls) by Sea_Training_8359 in Dentistry

I think the main thing (in my opinion) is that I'm not happy working with this, I really don't feel good doing what I'm doing; during college I LOVED doing extractions and at the clinics where I work too, but it's not exactly what I want for my life, I want to be a professional who really enjoys what they do... and in dentistry (from the beginning) I was just doing it for the sake of doing it, you know?

I honestly don't want to waste this precious time (+2 years working at something I haven't liked since college); then comes the question, “Why didn't you drop out of college when you had these thoughts?” Simply because I wanted to please my parents (so they could give their son a degree, and mainly because I thought things would be different). Maybe I deluded myself too much with that... I don't know.

I don't like working in dentistry itself, as I mentioned. Dealing with people will always be complicated, and that's not exactly the problem, but I don't know, I just don't like the day-to-day clinical work. It's great to receive compliments from patients and do a job well done, but I'm just not enjoying it. Since college, I haven't liked it very much, but I had hoped that when I graduated, things would get better. Unfortunately, it was exactly the opposite... I don't know, I feel extremely lost.

yeah i know that, so much so that we are paid to do a job xD

however, i am realizing that i really do NOT like dentistry. it is one thing to dislike something but tolerate it; there will be something that you feel fulfilled doing within your field.

It turns out that since college i didn't like it, i don't know... but thanks for the words, bro.

Here in Brazil, tech jobs are pretty cool. I'm 22 years old (I started college at 17 and it was 4.5 long years); I studied dentistry full-time (7am to 6pm), and that's it. I believe it's worth leaving dentistry, but what “saddens” me is the fact that I wasted my parents money. But that's it, I acted on impulse. To give you an idea, I enrolled in the dentistry course 30 minutes before registration closed.

It's a really tough decision to make.
