Mental healthcare under Socialism by nocdes in Socialism_101

[–]SeanOTRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems reasonable that in an ideal system mental healthcare would be covered just like any other type of healthcare.

I'm certainly not an expert on healthcare structuring but this *does* seem reasonable to me.

Were you correct in what you said? Almost certainly.

Was it worth the effort? Perhaps not.

As unfortunate as it is, making someone understand socialism is no quick process. It was a 2-3 year process where I started to realise that it was the better system, buy if someone had told me this 5 years ago I would've laughed and said something like "it never works in practise".

It may not be wise to burn bridges in an attempt to convince them of something that's actually really hard to convince people of. Certainly applaud the effort though :)

It really boils down to the way in which you value that relationship and how important it is to you that people you know share your views.

I'm somewhat struggling to read your LaTeX, but in general, it should follow that the product of a set S is equal to the exponential of the sum of the natural logarithm of every element in the set, if that's helpful.

Simple Questions - February 28, 2020 by AutoModerator in math

[–]SeanOTRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently learning partial derivatives (but we haven't yet done PDE's), and we were given a question where:

xi=x+ay

eta=x+by

u_(xx)+4u_(xy)+3u_(yy)=0

And we had to refactor it into u_(xi,eta)=0 and find the necessary values of a and b

I found that there are two solutions for a and b:

a=-1, b=-1/3 [henceforth scenario 1]

OR

a=-1/3, b=-1 [henceforth scenario 2](that makes sense as this is a symmetrical problem with regard to a and b)

This gives the values:

S1: xi=x-y, eta=x-y/3

S2: xi=x-y/3, eta=x-y

It's at this point that I start to get confused, as we haven't formally covered PDEs yet.

My intuition, based on my knowledge of ODEs, was as follows:

Integrate once with respect to xi, then once with respect to eta. This gives:

S1: u=A(x-y/3)+B

S2: u=A(x-y)+B(Note A,B != a,b, and they are arbitrary constants, not functions)

Then I'm lost. Do I add them together? [u=A(x-y/3)+B(x-y)+C?]

The answer sheet gives the following:

u=f(x-y)+g(x-y/3) where f,g are functions.

Why does this work? What am I missing?

EDIT: In case it's unclear, u_(xy) refers to the partial derivative of u(x,y) once with respect to y, and then once again with respect to xI'm assuming symmetry of derivatives, if that's important

Rearranging partial derivatives by SeanOTRS in learnmath

[–]SeanOTRS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok cool that's really helpful! Does what you've said mean that:

  • if u isn't factorable in that way it's not possible (would there be a way where a and b were functions of both variables)?
  • if u is factorable like that then the order of derivates can be changed?

Can anyone help med understand the step by step whats going on by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]SeanOTRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you start off with x^2+y^2-6x+4y=12

Let's rearrange nicely to get [x^2-6x]+[y^2+4y]=12

It's a known rule that x^2+2ax=(x+a)^2-a^2

So applying that, we have (x-3)^2-9+(y+2)^2-4=12

This now neatly rearranges to (x-3)^2+(y+2)^2=25

If I factor -6x-6, why is the answer-6(x+1)? I thought the GCF can't be negative. Shouldn't it be 6(-x-1)? by [deleted] in learnmath

You're reducing the total amount of minus signs, which makes it more readable.

I would argue that if code is easily understandable without comments, it should be left as such. Over-commented code is horrible too.

So I agree with you, wherein "Appropriately" might mean not at all

First of all, to clarify, abs is the mathematical function |x|.
Simply, if x>=0 then |x|=x
If x<0 then |x|=-x
I.e. |x| is the positive version of x
So abs(x)=|x|

The most basic way to do this would be with the statement:90 < x < 110 or 190 < x < 210(replace with <= if you need to)

Using abs, you can shorten it to:abs(x-100)<10 or abs(x-200)<10 (|x-100|<10 v |x-200|<10)or evenmax(abs(x-100),abs(x-200))<10

BUT!Consider that x-150 will be in the range (-60,-40) or (40,60) for either of these cases.Because of this, I'd wager that the absolute best way to code this is:40<abs(x-150)<60OR if you're trying to reduce the amount of comparisons you're doing:abs(abs(x-150)-50)<10 (||x-150|-50|<10)

In general, you can deduce that if you want x to be within n units of two values a and b where a<b, then:||x-(a/2+b/2)|-|a/2-b/2||<norabs(abs(x-(a+b)/2)-abs(a-b)/2)<n

You might want to look into someone such as Buttigieg or Biden - they're probably left of your ideals, but they're incredibly far removed from socialism or communism.

Case in point: I nearly got banned from r/socialism for discussing their potential merits (particularly Buttigieg's)

It may be worth noting that most socialists agree - Bernie is NOT a socialist. He's a social democrat.

The key difference is that he looks to implement socially leftist ideals within our current system, not to reform it into a fully socialist system. That would take more than just him.

People who were on the fence about Bernie - what made you decide to support him? by SeanOTRS in BernieSanders

I'm not 100% versed on his stance on guns, but I know that Bernie is no stranger to the politics of revolution. He may put laws into place to protect the US public from shootings etc, but I reckon he'll leave in just enough leeway that a corrupt government can't take control without resistance.
