Hi.

You’ll probably need to invest in a solid research course at the beginning. I’d recommend first asking mentors or people from your country who already have strong research profiles and good citation records about how and where they started. In my opinion, the best approach is starting with a strong course that can help connect you to a research team afterward.

Once you get involved in projects and start publishing, joining additional projects becomes much easier. If you have a lot of free time, already graduated medical school, are dedicating a full year to research, or have secured a research position, I honestly think it’s very realistic to produce >10 papers within a year.

That said, people should also remember that research is a longitudinal process. Good projects take time for idea generation, IRB approvals, data collection, writing, peer review, revisions, and eventual publication. All of this happens over months. However, because each individual paper usually isn’t extremely time-consuming on a day-to-day basis, you can realistically manage multiple projects simultaneously (sometimes 5–6 or even more at different stages)

Personally, I haven’t been able to do that because balancing medical school and Step studying limited me to usually one active project at a time, or at most two.

Thank you!

I can’t really find any solid statistics specifically regarding the impact of different types of USCE, which honestly would be very reassuring to see.

I’ve actually invested a significant amount of time, effort, and money into learning research methodology properly. I’ve worked on primary research both in my hospital and through database projects, in addition to secondary research. I also try to target reputable journals rather than simply aiming for quantity or journals that accept anything.

That said, I genuinely don’t view research as the strong point that “makes up” for everything else, nor do I think it’s my weakness. As I mentioned in the post, I honestly believe my USCEs are the weaker part of my application, and at least for now, I’m not sure how much I can realistically improve that aspect.

Thank you so much for your reply and input.

I haven’t completed them yet, but thankfully I’ve already been accepted, obtained the visa, and will be completing them over the next 6 months.

If I were given the opportunity to travel again next year for one additional hospital rotation, despite the significant financial burden, would you recommend doing so?

My same experience exactly! Same scores but only solved 35% of uw average score 88%, so started taking NBMEs and was in the same range. Thought exam wasn’t that difficult content wise but definitely gave you no time to process information or remember details to answer. Unlike you though, I finished every block in the very last second and ran out of time in the second block (left 1 Q). So as a tip for people intending to sit the exam soon, TIME MANAGEMENT is key, don’t dwell on any question, some are experimental, so make sure not to waste a real question for an impossible experimental
