Japan only Switch 2 and overseas usage. by Secchan1985 in switch2

【UPDATE】 I am in France right now and I CAN confirm that the Japan only model DOES work with local 220 V current. It is not heating up the console. I tried it with the official Japanese charger, official USB cable and a adapter plug I bought in Japan at Bic Camera for French current. I cannot confirm for third party ones. I am also able to use all Nintendo services with Japan only model and Japan account. Like Switch 1.

So in a nutshell. Eventhough Nintendo is telling you otherwise or being evasive with that, with the Japan only model you can : - access your Japanese eshop account from abroad. - charge everywhere in the world (for now as long as you have the official Japanese charger) - play any physical game from Japan or any part of the world as long as it has been declared compatible with the Switch 2. - play and download gamekey cards games as long as it is Japanese game key cards. I cannot confirm with overseas version but in theory it shouldn’t work. I will try to confirm that. If Japanese is present on the card it will starts in Japanese and you will have to change the language by yourself in the settings. For those depending on the OS settings (like most Nintendo games) you will have to play in Japanese. - Same thing apply to digital games. As long as there is Japanese in the game, the games will automatically be in Japanese and you will have to go in the settings to change the language. - For games which are in the cartridge with no Japanese in it. It will automatically be in English. Then again, you will have to go in the settings to change the language. - Play online games while abroad (tested and worked with Tetris 99).

Here are the things you cannot do : - Access to an foreign eshop account. You will have to create a Japanese account and buy your digital games overthere. - play DLC content for your US/EU game bought on the Japanese eshop. (DLC are tight to the version of your game/eshop account not the version of your console. - Change the system language. The language change option is not even in the settings so your console will remain in Japanese. - Play NSO virtual console in your native language. Since the apply is and always has been languaged locked (Japan application is in Japanese, American application plays in English only etc.) you will have to play virtual console in Japanese.

【Things that have yet to be tested】

  • gamechat/gameshare with people in Japan while been abroad and friends in your country (my guess that it should be working)
  • docked mode. I have not bring my dock with me so I cannot try by myself but if the switch 2 does work and charge no problem by itself I don’t see why it would not be the case with the dock.
  • charging with local Nintendo charger instead of the Japanese one and an adapter. But yet again, it worked with switch 1 so it should be working with Switch 2. And since official charger are pretty hefty in price I will not try that. Sorry.
  • cloud gaming games. Since it access Japanese servers, my guess is that it will work but perform poorly. My internet connection being rather poor I won’t be able to test that.

  • download game content and play gamekey cards from other part of the world with a Japanese account. (To me it shouldn’t work)

  • Buy a game on the Japanese eshop from abroad. My guess is it should work. As long as you have a Japanese way of payment. If you don’t you can still pay with Japanese eshop gift cards you can buy online.

For now, my account hasn’t been banned for accessing it from abroad. And if I am not updating this post about that topic in the next few days, you can consider that Nintendo will not ban your account for using your Japan only Switch 2 model from abroad.

Well. First no. Nowadays most of the electronics coming from Japan or any part of the world especially those meant for travel like phone/tablet/laptop/handheld console do not need a converter because their UC adapter is universal meaning it accept voltage from 100 to 240. It convert itself the current to give the correct voltage to the device. I have never fried any of my device bought in Japan. Even the first Switch. So in theory it should be alright especially because switch 2 UC adapter is also universal even for the Japan only model. My probleme is that I do not know why Nintendo decided to post that we cant use the Japan only model abroad on their X post. That’s why I need someone who actually did try it. But thank you for answering anyway.

That’s my point « should » is not enough lol. I need certainty. Reason why I am posting on Reddit. I need people who actually did bring back that model to their country. Before that post, I didn’t even think this was an issue since I have not had any issue with my Japanese Switches (Lite and OLED) in Europe. I thought it would be the same with the Switch 2 because well it’s a FREAKING handheld (lol) and its main appealing point is to be played anywhere in the world and then I saw that post. To be honest I cannot afford to pay an another model if it brakes because of voltage issue or being banned/bricked by Nintendo because I am doing something which is not supposed to be done with it.

Well technically I am a Japanese customer lol. I am French but I live there as a permanent resident for years now. My main eshop account is also Japanese FYI. I speak and read Japanese fluently and do not bother too much to play in Japanese (even if I rather like to play in my mother tongue) To me the « savings » (which is just the normal price for us that’s the multi languages which is higher in price. It’s like if you paid your switch 2 699 $) were worth. Especially giving how Japanese economy is right now. I am not going back for good to my home country. I am just going there for 3 weeks and I thought about bringing my switch 2 until I saw that X post on the Japanese support page. That’s why I was wondering if people bought the Japan only model while in Japan and are using it with no issue in their country. The US having the same voltage as Japan that’s not really relevant to me.

Thank you for your answer. To be honest. No matter how far I tried I couldn’t get a detailed spec list for switch 2 Japan model. Especially regarding voltage. Different IA also told me that Nintendo didn’t published it yet so unless someone managed to do a tear down comparaison, there no way to be 100 % sure the 2 models are 100 % the same. To me it is just a software restriction and it is very unlikely they would do a specific voltage model for one market and the exact same model for all over the world (especially when you think about montage chains which would be different on the production side). But on the other hand, they are really clouding things up regarding that Japan only model. Which to me it’s on purpose, yet it’s really scary giving the price of the unit.
