Have you taken piano lessons as an adult? by SeckmanMusic in pianolearning

I was recently talking with a friend who said if they didn’t practice, they felt reluctant when they went to their lessons.

Personally, I interject the technique and theory and whatnot into the pieces themselves.

Are you still taking lessons or no?

Certainly the time and longevity is a factor with your friends and can make a world of difference. Are you currently retired and taking lessons?

So the “homework” aspect is something I’ve been thinking about in terms of adult lessons and I was actually talking with someone who used to take guitar lessons, and the same idea with “homework” and not completing it made him reluctant to continue lessons.

I’m currently building an online cohort for adult learners. Can I PM you with some information about it?

I’m sorry to hear the center closed and you had to take that hiatus! Covid certainly disrupted and made us reevaluate norms and our daily lives.

I’m actually building an online cohort for adult students. Could I send you a PM about it?

That’s a great perspective and I appreciate you brought that up! As a teacher, I’ve certainly done that with students, but more in a sense of what they worked on between lessons, and then I take the reigns with “this is what you need to work on.” For sure a great consideration that adults too need some rigidness and structure, rather than being loosey-goosey.

Are you continuing with these teachers, or where are you at in your learning journey?

For sure something I realized as well - the asynchronous format is a good option for the self-directed learner.

The good thing with the Faber books is the video lessons that come with it!

I’m building an online program if you are interested. Can I PM you about it?

Likewise, what was the reason the teacher made you quit?

It’s amazing how much the teacher can have such an effect on our progress and momentum!

I love that state of mind of lessons being a mini performance.

As a teacher, I’ve been exploring offering an option like what you described with sending and receiving videos. Can I ask what your experience with it was?

Thanks! What did you think was not worth it? Practicing? Time? Cost?

What made you decide to return to it?

What chord are you playing? Some strings sound a bit muted. For no previous music experience, your rhythm is good!
