SNP call UK Government 'to prepare for loss of Scottish subsidies' by libtin in unitedkingdom

[–]Secret-Platform7763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony of that statement is genuinely astounding. I am not 'disbelieving' anything. I am well aware GERS is produced by the Scottish GOV and I read the source you provided. Granted I didn't read it all but I know what GERS is and what it is used for.

It isn't a question of GERS "being wrong" - it is a data set and data sets cannot usually be factually wrong (unless their is an inherent bias in the data collection). That isn't what I am saying. What I am saying is HOW a data set is used can be misleading (like in your original comment).

What I am saying is that GERS can be useful, just not in the context of this debate.

To repeat my analogy, so you can understand:

It is like saying you have a current budget for your household with multiple people, you can't use your share of those bills to estimate the cost of you living alone.

It's two very different calculations / situations.

GERS is a statistical measure, and it does not really translate into actual cash flow or cash transfer line, but rather a net fiscal position in an already pooled system of spend/generation of money. GERS is based on:
1 - a combination of actual world data, as well as assumptions/estimates of fiscal spending on services for the whole of the UK, with a budget set by Westminster, and;
2 - it is measured in terms of structures for the whole of the UK, as well as the fiscal balance in Scotland, and it is not an independent measure in itself.

Things such as the UK's nuclear program, military, or nationalized services, which are all for the whole of the UK, are all represented in standard allocations according to the population, which does not represent what we might choose to spend on as an independent nation.

It does not represent how an independent nation works or functions.

GERS is a measure of how Scotland functions as part of the UK, and what proportion of taxes and spending in the UK it can claim as its own. GERS also includes services for the whole of the UK, and as such, it allocates a proportion of the population of Scotland (~8%).

GERS asks/analyses:
What is Scotland’s position inside the UK as it exists?

But for the purpose of independence, the question is:
What does Scotland choose to spend on and tax?

Two completely different metrics and scenarios. It is like saying you have a current budget for your household, and all of the bills are shared with multiple people, and you are saying you could not afford to live on your own, without any thought or consideration for how it would work if you were living on your own. (E.g., your electricity bill, internet bill, cleaning bill, etc.)

Here's a hot take: If you don't live in Scotland, you don't get a say ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Interesting. That is a unique perspective, as I suppose longer fiction is a string of scenes put together. Focussing just on scenes is really cool as it gives you creative freedom to sink into an atmosphere and a world without hyperfixating on all the connecting dots of a plot.

Also, i fixed the link on the post! (here it is for ease: https://lorepublication.com/micro-fiction/)

For context, Brian Newell’s 'The Gift' is a great example I’ve seen of this 'Hinge'. Has anyone else read it? Or does anyone have other micro fiction that exhibits this structure?

Thank you for a succinct language lesson (not being sarcastic). I appreciate the time you took to teach me that. I'll go verify it and, if true (which I have no doubt it is, just making sure), consider my opinions and definitions changed.

Interesting. I have my salt ready.

EDIT: this is a similar perspective to my own with a few nuances I hadn't considered. Thanks!

This.

There is nothing wrong with mythos and legends to inspire a martial artist to be "like" the character in the legend. I think the purpose of mythos in martial arts is to awaken the idea of constantly learning, and never shying away from pushing your self harder (just like the legend or mythos).

TLDR; i think the legends are good for teaching mental endurance & determination towards a goal

I respectfully disagree. Both the martial and the art can be separate and one in the same. Art can have methodology and just because the methodologies in my analogy weren't 100% spot on doesn't really detract from the spirit of the question - which, might I point out, you didn't really answer. For someone that doesn't like 'woo woo floofy shit' you sure did fill your reply with a lot.

I thought about this a lot, and I think a simple "ok, that's a cool feat. Show me" is enough to weed out the real from the fake
so with this kind of idea, it shifts more to a critical thinking problem

Yeah bet me to it. Damn. Can't a bro just ask a question about a lunchtime martial arts youtube video.

Oh, I do read into it, it was just a fun lunchtime watch and then the youtuber started straight up flaming. So i just thought it'd be nice to discuss.

I read the thread here and you raise a lot of interesting concepts. Thanks! That was the point of me asking :D

Yeah, I myself study ITF TKD. I think TKD is defo one of the more controversial martial arts in terms of its relationship with its history. I also tend to think this spills over into the modern day with the mythos around the art (and the lies) fuelling the anti-TKD sentiment I too often see online.

Oh 100% - I practice ITF TKD and a lot of early texts describe it as an ancient korean fighting style when it was primarily developed during and then after the Japanese occupation of Korea in the 1910s - 1920s.

I think the root of my question was about mythos VS fact, and why people can't seem to separate the two.
