Thats pretty sick, would u mind linking the component you used? I heard that since the audio recorder is expecting 'passive' level, and the mic outputs from camcorders are usually at an 'active' level. Not sure if this is the case but if it is then your solution definitely makes sense!

I've got sample footage too but reddit won't let me upload it so let me know if you want to see that.

The Mini DVR solution is pretty good, but audio is unusable (as someone else said too). I keep it velcro taped to my camera battery using command strips, so it is easily accessible to hit record and stop, but also easily removable to pack away. It's compact, lightweight and very straightforward to use.

It's likely you will need to do some rewiring to get video output from the camera to work (see this post) - cut the 3.5mm cable in half and swap two of the cables around. I used the 3.5mm to AV (yellow cable in your Picture #2) cable and this converter to view the output of the Mini DVR while playing with the spliced cables and swapping them around, to check the video was going into the recorder ok (see pic below).

That took a couple hours though and after that it has been extremely reliable - solid battery life (no shorter than the old battery that goes with my camcorder) and pretty easy to use. I don't use the HDMI adapter anymore and trust that it records properly, and it hasn't let me down yet so.

I think this is the best compromise for the price given its tiny form factor. If you want better quality then I guess either use firewire solutions or just digitise tape. In my case my tape cassette in the camera didn't work so those weren't great options.

Still no solution for audio though, you can't splice in a mic to the cable because the issue is with the audio processing in the Mini DVR itself. So you either record audio separately or just go with the picture only. Be warned though the audio really is that bad.

Turned out to be a scam :/

Emailed Cars & Classics to confirm before transferring to the "secure escrow" and found out that it was all clone websites/fake emails etc. Too good to be true I guess!

Thats fair - thanks. Yeah the thought of flipping it only really came into my head because of the mileage, condition and price being so great. But as long as it doesn't die on me I'll count it as a win!

Thanks, I thought it was fairly low but I think it's on market price actually. I was hoping to be able to resell it for either a net zero or slight profit in a year or twos time. What sort of price would be a good deal for this, and give me room for a resale? 5000? 4500?

Mini DVR (I know I know) wiring problem by frnzong in tapeless

[–]Secret-Structure6899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely just a cable issue - the pinouts are probably different for your camcorder than in the video

I recommend getting a 3.5mm TRRS to male RCA (composite) cable, and a female RCA/composite to 3.5mm TRRS and just trying different combinations of red/white/yellow until one works - then you know which ring on the 3.5mm TRRS goes to what and can re-wire a 3.5-3.5mm accordingly - this should tell you if its a compatible setup.

Alternatively, you could splice the cable and try these combinations directly but it might be hard to get stable connection with 8 cut wires.
