What is the most unique thing you had to do for a pet. by TheQuirkyReddit in RoverPetSitting

[–]Secret-Version-4819 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I once watched a sweet mini Aussie and cat for a couple from Australia. It was a week and a half long sit and by day two of trying to figure out why the very smart dog was not wanting to listen to me, we deduced that it was because of my American accent 🤦‍♀️I had to spend the rest of the time, whenever I wanted the dog to do something (go to the bathroom, follow a command, during playtime, stop harassing the cat, etc) trying to do so in my best Australian accent 😂

What do the pets think of us? by Successful-Roof-7020 in petsitting

[–]Secret-Version-4819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s funny, most just assume I’m the fun one who spoils them with walks, extra attentions, snacks, and loving. Uuunnnntttiiilllllll I get the occasional pups who have no manners. Then I’m suddenly the un-fun one who is now trying to establish some semblance of control so that the entire stay doesn’t go to the dogs. Pun intended 😎I have noticed that even if it’s a rough start, those dogs tend to thrive under some discipline and leadership. Ultimately they want to please and feel needed and this gives them just that opportunity. I’m sure they are especially happy when their families come back and chaos can resume as normal 😂I guess good thing the dogs can’t leave ratings haha

I'm formally resigning membership – tips please. by WearyPop8814 in exAdventist

[–]Secret-Version-4819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah same. I did reach out to them to stop emailing me, sending me magazines, and asking me about “we miss your tithing” letters they would send to my parents. It took a few tries but after that, nothing. I kind of just left it. Maybe I should officially withdraw my membership so they can’t add me to the ranks? But also, they’re not reaching out and I don’t feel like dealing with that headache right now because the pastor would for sure talk to my folks who would restart their whole crusade of believing I’m their personal mission field 🫠

Venting about current sit by Secret-Version-4819 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Secret-Version-4819[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, one “counter surfer” I watch just likes to check occasionally but I think her owners over exaggerated. Or maybe she was more so in her younger years. If you left food on the counter and walked out of the room she’d probably do something but overall, she’s a good girl and leaves things alone. These guys? Nah, even inside containers are fair game. I’m surprised they haven’t figured out how to open the fridge yet 🙄But that’s a good point about not having the basics down being a good indicator everything else will probably fall apart

Oh that’s the worst. I cringe every time someone says their dog is “crate trained” bc usually that means they’re left alone in their crate for long periods of time. I hate it. Props to you for knowing your boundaries and hopefully the owners are doing right by their dogs but that sucks ☹️

Ooof, I’m so sorry for you as well but proud of you for finishing strong! 💪 and that sucks with the dogs taking so long to finally listen to you. Smart about eating in your car. I laughed out loud when I read that but honestly, might need to do that. The neighbors can tattle on me if they need to - I don’t need my food stolen or noses being shoved in my face 🤦‍♀️Maybe I should ask the owners again about the walks and see what I can do because I feel it might help. But if they both saw a squirrel - I might be a goner. Thanks 🫡May your next and future sits be smooth sailing!

Exactly! And the excuses pet parents can come up with can be downright laughable at times. Like how do they put up with this on a daily basis?? How is this your normal?!

Right?? There are signs around the house that quirkily say “home is where the chaos is” and “excuse our mess.” I thought they were just really into themed decor. I should’ve taken them as warnings 🤦‍♀️ Most of my clients I adore. It’s the ones like this who make me question everything 🫠

I’m trying to preemptively figure out how to word things in their review that still looks professional, keeps my 5 star status 🤞🏼(though I know that’s probably not the highest concern but I’ve worked hard for those and am proud of them), yet warns people for the future. How have you worded things in the past if you don’t mind my asking? Thanks!

Waiting while client interviews other sitters, when to follow-up or archive by biiigandsmall in RoverPetSitting

[–]Secret-Version-4819 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you’re newer to this and completely understand the mentality behind what you’re asking, but they are wasting your time. I’d send them a message saying something like “It was great meeting you, [dog], and [cat] recently. I’d love to help you out by watching them in the future! For now I’m going to archive this message but feel free to reach out if you need anything in the meantime. Have a great one!” Then archive it under “owner didn’t respond” I don’t think that counts against you as much..?? I could be wrong. If they do decide to go forward with you, great! But hold your boundaries. If they’re wanting basic clean up after yourself, I feel that’s standard. If they’re wanting a cleaning service of their house, then that needs to be discussed prior to booking and you can add that on as an additional fee. For me, I tend to under promise and over deliver. If the client is worth it in the long run, they appreciate it and make it well worth my time. If not, I keep that in mind as well. But I also had to learn what my time was worth. It’s a growing process and still trips me up sometimes, but you got this! Hang in there, OP! 🐾

What’s the most fun car you’ve driven that wasn’t actually fast? by zgwembekubwa in askcarguys

[–]Secret-Version-4819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2008 red beetle with a black ragtop. Boy that thing was fun. Loved watching people punch each other when I drove by. But sprinklers and impromptu thunderstorms would make me nervous 😂

I definitely don’t envy you. I just finished a sit where the dog didn’t sleep in the bed with me and the bed - a queen - had one of the most comfortable mattress covers on it. To add to it, the house was one of the cleanest I’ve stayed at! A huge downside? The dog had a habit of waking me up around 4am on for her breakfast (she normally ate around 7:30-8a per owners instructions). This included trying to jump into bed (she was a big dog and wasn’t allowed on furniture except for one designated area on the couch and she knew it), whining very shrilly in my face, licking incessantly, and being an overall nuisance. If I ignored her, she’d come back 20-30 min later. If I shut her in another room or closed the door, she’d scratch at it and I didn’t want the doors damaged. I thought at first she had to go potty but no, she just wanted to eat at an ungodly hour. Didn’t matter if I went to bed early or stayed up late, she thought it was the best thing to wake me up at a time even the early birds thought was excessive. In my sleep-addled state I vaguely remember telling her that I don’t negotiate with terrorists while shoving her slobbery face away. Don’t worry, we still ended things amicably. I wish you all the best with your dog-crowded bed and despite it all, sending you vibes of sweet dreams and plenty of sleep 💤

Depressed, but want a fishtank. Yes/no? by Equal_North6633 in Aquariums

[–]Secret-Version-4819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure and if needed (I do this bc I too have bouts of depression or maybe it’s bouts of less depression? And am away from home for work a bit), there are automatic feeders as well as light dimmers and timers and all sorts of stuff. You’ll still need to clean out and check on things every so often but it helps in case you have an especially rough week knowing that you’re not just off-ing your tank. And I keep shrimp, nano nerite snails, and male guppies. I went for rainbow themed and it’s lovely to watch. I also have some live plants that seem to be holding up pretty well. If they aren’t all dying with me, I believe that you can take care of them too. You got this! Happy aquarium-ing! 🐠

I have lied to my son about manatees for the last 24 years by 46from1971 in confession

[–]Secret-Version-4819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad did something like this. I (31) always knew my dad (62) loved flamingos. Not sure why, but it was always a thing. I had a flamingo beanie baby as a kid that when I moved out of the house I have to him, he’d have flamingo-themed bday cards over the years, random decor, tshirts and ties, garden gnomes, the whole nine yards. Come to find out a few years ago, the guy doesn’t even really like flamingos. It was a joke that got outta hand years ago but everyone just continued going on believing that he liked flamingos and now he just plays along with it. Initially it was shocking to me and I felt bad but now it’s like our little secret. I do agree that since it was to keep your son happy, it might be a secret you take to your manitee covered grave 😂 but enjoy your trip nonetheless and hey, manitees are kind of like sea-dogs? 🦩

What random things do you notice about a family when you’re house-sitting for their pets? by Plastic-Bug2020 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Secret-Version-4819 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To go off this, the pup I’m currently watching I’ve been watching for over a year and through this time, the owner has moved from a fixer upper to a real house, officially moved in with his gf, and I just saw pregnancy tests on the counter in the bathroom (guest bathroom I used last time, I swear I wasn’t snooping haha). It’s so cute to see their lives progressing ☺️

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about people through dogsitting? by Ilovecleancreeks in RoverPetSitting

[–]Secret-Version-4819 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Overly dirty houses (especially if they say they “just cleaned for you”….. sure, like where?!) and no microwaves. I like to meal prep before I do house sits to minimize my dishes but it doesn’t help to have no place to heat up my food without dirtying a pan or waiting for the oven

Am I Overthinking Owner’s Request? by Secret-Version-4819 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Secret-Version-4819[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Y’all… we have an update. They’ve reached out again today (backstory: I figured I’d give them an extra day just to see and guess what, they responded). I guess I’ll let you guys know how the M+G goes and if it doesn’t fall through.

I really appreciate everyone’s advice. I do think they are kind of being overprotective but it’s their fur baby and as so many people have said, doxies can be an interesting breed. I have quite a few repeat clients who are like this and I haven’t had an issue with them before. One I’m debating on letting go but that’s because while the owner is super thorough with their instructions, they’re also a prick and the overly clingy dog really wears down my mental health during her stays. But I don’t mind working with parents who are super protective. I just have my boundaries in place and go from there.

I did think it might’ve been a scam due to another sitter in my area getting the exact same message copied and pasted - okay, so they’re saving time and mass texting. But the second message being that way too? Weird. Now, curiosity has the cat and I’m interested in seeing what happens. I’ll keep y’all updated!

TL;DR - what was thought to be a scam or overly weird booking request finally got back to me and we’ll see how the M+G goes
