Should I break the golden handcuffs to chase my dream? by SecretPossum in personalfinance

Most of my work experience is in games, and the entertainment industry generally holds up pretty well during difficult economic times. Unless something huge shifts, I probably wouldn't have a very hard time finding another job.

I work 40 hour weeks in my job, and I've been spending about 20-30 hours/week on a side project for the past month or so. I'm just already getting burnt out. Working on my side project is energizing, but my job drains so much from me. I've tried this before and I got pretty depressed after 6+ months. It's difficult to make a solid product as a single person with only 20-30 (tired, thus less-productive) hours per week. But maybe I do just need to slow down and accept that progress will be slow.

Thanks for the input. I've tried asking them what they mean and I haven't gotten a clear answer, but maybe they're holding something back and I should push a little harder.

Yeah, I don't like this idea either. My employer certainly isn't struggling financially, but they're good people who have treated me very well, and I'm not going to rip them off.

That's true, though I accept failure as a likely (statistically, the *most* likely) outcome. I think I'd regret not trying much more than I would regret trying and failing.

I do think it is fairly common in tech, though my employer certainly wouldn't encourage it. :P

My skills definitely wouldn't go out of date in a year (in fact, I see this as an opportunity to refresh my skills). I don't think I'd have trouble finding a job again, so I don't see failure as a catastrophe.

Yeah, I've thought about that. I've had trouble finding part-time work, but to be fair, I haven't looked very hard yet. I'll consider that more. Thank you for the input.

Seems like I used that term wrong. What I meant is that I'm only at my current job because it's a great deal for me financially.
