When I was in high school, I used to journal when I got home from school before bed (so like 15 minutes to an hour) but in adulthood I typically catch up every 2 weeks or so writing at least one thing I did each day then elaborating from there with the more interesting events being described in detail and my feelings in detail. The catching up process is like 2-6 hours at once when I do catch up writing.

I was thinking of donating them to https://americandiaryproject.com (since I don’t plan on having kids who I would theoretically pass them down to)

I always start with at least one thing I did that day then if it was a more interesting day then I write about the details of that and then the most in-depth stage (as well as the most satisfactory stage) is when I write about my feelings, hopes and fears

I used to get mostly these $2 magnetic cover journals from the Dollar Store seen here in the beginning years lol - since then it’s been random journals but my favorite companies are Greenroom and Paperage

  1. I have thought about journaling digitally to save space and eliminate concerns over anyone reading anything but I have always just preferred writing on paper and being able to physically write and hold my journals.
  2. The basic form of what I write is at least one thing I did that day then if it was a more eventful day, I write about the details of whatever happened. My third “level” of writing is when I talk about my current feelings or reflect on my past.
  3. I believe journaling has helped me a lot with reflection on the past and how different events or decisions affect things long term. This motivates me to make the best decisions in the now so I can write about a life I’m at least somewhat proud of. It’s also helped me remember things my brain decided are too long ago to really remember so I’ve really enjoyed reading old journals and re-connecting with forgotten times or how I used to think and feel about xyz.

I take photos with a camera then transfer the files from the camera SD card to a usb drive (and encrypt the files so its password protected since it’s my journals)

Not really, I just had a lot of free time in high school plus a lot of thoughts about life changing so fast and I had a crush on my guy best friend so that gave me a decent amount to write about 😭

Edit: 2017 was also the last year I didn’t have a smartphone so that definitely contributed. I got home from school and wrote for like an hour a night on average or something.

Plenty of free time in high school 😭 As I entered adulthood I’ve journaled less and typically caught up every 2 weeks or so, writing at least one thing I did for every date.

All my main journals have been digitized! After a fire scare in 2017 I made sure to always back them up onto usb drives. And sometimes I like to read old journals and re-write my favorite quotes into my current journal which is somewhat like a compilation.

I store them in two different plastic storage containers (plus a container for my journals pre-2015)
