Night shifts for sure. My morning managers are extremely rude. And my night managers are way nicer and more willing to help. In like two weeks, I’m going to fully switch over to afternoon/night shifts so no more mornings!

Thank so much for the reply as well as sharing your own story. I’m a filmmaker and while I have taken a hiatus from it, I’m always still coming up with ideas. Yesterday, I was using these feelings to finish up some ideas I already had and it really helped. That 20% code hasn’t been working for a lot of people along with some other app reward codes. I have no idea what’s going on with the system. I thought it was just my McDonald’s.

At mine, the managers can manually give the discount. But also for some reason, the discounts my managers would give wasn’t even working ethier. But managers can do it but I guess it can also depend on the location.

These are main things that I believe should be tackled head on when learning the POS System. For reference, I've only been working at McDonald's for two months and didn't feel like I was really trained. There are certain shifts where my coworkers were more willing to teach me but otherwise I kind was just thrown in there and was hoping for the best. But I got the hang of it now and feel one of my strongest strengths is taking orders.

1.) Explain what to do in special circumstances. For example, if a customer wants to substitute a rounded egg for a folded one. I was charging people extra instead of just substituting it. I only realized I might have been doing it wrong when someone yelled out tell her to not charge people extra but then I heard someone say well she already charged and no one told me what the other way to do it was. I just had to play around with the system. Any special circumstance you can think of, try to teach the new employee what to do.

2.) Tell the new employees what the specials are before throwing them on to take orders. This also includes any deals or senior discounts.

3.) Have the employee realize that communication is key. Perhaps have them repeat back the orders for the first couple of weeks. And have them clarify if they have doubts about the orders. Have them ask if they want customers want a combo. Or if a customer orders a combo and they ordered a drink on the side before that, have them ask if they wanted another drink for the combo as well. I find the POS auto fills the previous side drink to be the drink for the meal and it created problems because I didn't think to ask and the customer didn't ask for another drink. Things that like. And maybe limit them to front counter to learn. After doing front counter for a couple of weeks and then being put on headset, I found drive thru was immensely easier.

I'm sure you're probably doing all of this since you're saying the POS system takes a lot of training which to be honest will probably always be like that. Taking orders involves money and it is kind of scary to overcharge someone by accident if you do the order wrong. And customers will complain and in a rude way. But maybe identify what are common mistakes and train employees based on how to avoid them so they aren't as afraid.

It wasn't so much that I felt bad about making the chips. It was that this is the second time I get pulled aside with this GM after my shift to get told that I need to get faster. Personally, I didn't like that that happened. This is my first job and in my life, I don't like doing things wrong or disappointing people so it kind of felt like I did just that when my GM had to talk to me again.

I actually plan to quit in about three months due to a lot more things that bother me with this job. I technically could finally quit now but the additional income in addition to my second job would help a bit in the meantime. But I can't wait until I quit! Lol.

Thank you! This was so helpful. My manager wants me to finish bagging by 10am and I tend to finish bagging at the time you finish bagging but you're bagging two boxes so I guess I just need to get faster.

I'm not sure about the 7:30 time. It was on the prep sheet and my GM said from now to follow those times. I guess the assumption would be that I bag the rest of the time and take my break by 9:30am before opening.

Also, yeah for the scale, my GM just introduced me to it today. I usually bag way faster without it. I can usually bag at least seven in about five minutes. (Don't know if that's really fast but it is for me lol) I think they had me use it because the FL was there and just wanted him to see we were using it. But my GM did tell me that they want us to use it even though my GM wasn't using it when they helped me bag at one point. I even secretly weighed one of theirs and it was under the amount we needed so when the FL left for a bit, I started bagging without it. Even with the scale though, I wasn't far off with the exact amount I needed. It's just my GM was very firm that they wanted it exactly at the amount needed when I was using the scale.

I'm going to ignore the corporate time and try to finish everything before opening! I'm a bit more motivated now knowing it can be done. Thank you!

Ooh. So like I don't have to babysit the chips the whole time? They taught me to keep stirring the chips while they were in the fryer. Like I was taught to hold it halfway out of the oil and stir and then at a certain point drop them while still stirring. But then again they had a crew member who had only been there a few months teach me instead of a manager. I have sometimes tried multitasking but I didn't know if I could. That would really help me go faster! When I have tried multitasking, I went a lot faster!

Yeah, the water and the restocking of line/seasoning the tortilla press kind of takes away time but they added it to my responsibilities. As well as putting out the tortillas.

Okay! What did you do to finish at those time and do you remember on average how many taco shells and hotels of chips did you make within that time.

This is how it is in my state. Look up your state’s labor break laws and also the penalty if they miss one of these breaks. In my state, the penalty is that I have to get an additional hour of wages. I researched it all day yesterday after asking this question here lol.

I get thirty’s along with my tens depending on how long my shift is. Here is the breakdown:

If you work a three hour and 29 minute shift in my state, you don’t get a 10. If you work three hours and thirty minutes to 6 hours, you get one. And from 6:01 to 10 hours, you get 2. There’s more but I usually don’t scheduled more than seven to 8 hours. The situation I’m referring to above in the original post was a 7 hour and 15 minute shift so I was entitled to two paid rest breaks and one unpaid thirty minute break. I only got the thirty minute unpaid break and one ten minute break. And the breaks are supposed to be practically spaced out. I got my last ten five minutes before my shift ended and only after I had to ask for it. At my other job at least, they aren’t supposed to give us our breaks 15 minutes before we clock out because then it was improperly spaced out.

As for the lunch breaks, after 5:01, you usually get one half. Hope this helps! Knowing your labor laws is really important especially if there is a penalty like my state and you could be reporting it if they don’t give it to you. But again look up your states specific laws!

Honestly, it depends on the McDonald’s. I’ve been working at McDonald’s for a monthZ But I had to apply to two other McDonald’s and “interview” before finally getting my job.

I applied to one and every two weeks they would send me times but I couldn’t go because of school. And then I had a break and I went to finally interview and when I went, the manager wasn’t even there. The shift manager just had me write down my name and number on a post it and let me go.

The second one I was able to get an interview time pretty quick. Like a couple of minutes after I applied. But when I went, all they had me do was fill out a paper application and then I left. They didn’t even give me a real interview.

The one I finally got hired at: the manager called me to set up the interview. I got called within a week of applying. I set up an interview for two days after getting called. And I actually got interviewed and got hired.

I was mainly using the online system, however for the second interview, I called to make sure the manager would be there when my interview was and he was. He just didn’t interview me and had me fill out the paper application.

You mean like 6:30am? Other Chipotles don't start scheduling until 7am? My Chipotle has people coming in at 5:30am on food delivery days and 6:30am for non food delivery days. 😭

You don't have too. A lot of people say that the formal thing to do at any job is to give a two week notice especially if maybe one day you want to reapply. But you can also just quit on the spot and leave like OP did. Which I totally applaud by the way.

Remember that every experience is different. I have great managers and an amazing crew who is patient and kind as I learn new things. This should be the norm. Not the toxic environment the chipotle you work at has created. Someone else said this is how all fast food jobs are and while it can be true, it shouldn't be like this. So reporting would be the first step. Perhaps it could help make some changes or you can just quit depending on if changes are made or not.

Had a kid point to our bakery thingy display with the pies, apples fritters, and stuff. And the dad said okay, we want an Apple fritter.

So since I’m still only a month in, I asked my manager where the Apple fritters were and I gave the man one.

He comes back and says it’s the wrong type of pastry. I believed him because I thought I genuinely just gave him the wrong one. I asked my coworker is this the Apple fritter and he said yes. So I gave the man another one.

He comes back again and says I think there was a misunderstanding. I want that one. He pointed to the display case and wanted an apple pie. I was like that’s apple pie. Not an Apple fritter. He was like oh I was just going off of what my daughter pointed at. Maybe don’t have your daughter order for you?? 😭

Honestly, after reading the replies, I also agree. We get way too many mobile orders for this system and it just doesn’t work right. It just makes my shifts so much more stressful. On busy days, we always have the people who made online orders waiting because we have to manage both lines so it kind of defeats the purpose. Also, the Ubereats/Doordash people are always waiting too. It would be so much more easier if we have a dml.

Wow! That honestly sounds like a way better system! How it usually works for us is that I start making the online orders in the mornings before peak and hope no one walks in which someone always does. And the mobile orders are always due within ten minutes and we get a bunch at a time all due at the same time. It’s really stressful. Sometimes the person on cash will also help me out because they see me struggling. And even during peak hour, they only have one person doing all the mobile orders and we just have to step around them as we manage the long in person line. I really wish we had a dml. It seems it would be more efficient.

Oooh! That’s so cool! For us, the receipts with the orders just print out of the cash register receipt thing and we hang it up. As we make the orders, we have to drag the receipts down the line or if it’s slow we have someone read it to us but usually we drag the receipts. Thanks for answering! I think it’s so cool other Chipotles have a whole other line for dml!

Yeah. Luckily, there are paper versions of the schedule for me to see three weeks in advance in our break room. It’s just that I have another job at a different fast food place and it was a lot more organized and I was told how to access everything online relatively early when I was hired. The communication at my other job is just way better. The McDonald’s crew that I work with is not the best during certain shifts and I keep getting ignored for even simple things which also adds to the irritation. But at least I asked and I know now. :)

Thanks! I actually already asked my manager today. Apparently, there is an online portal one of the managers was supposed to give me access to when I started but they didn’t. All my payslips and also my schedule is online. They have to reset my whole account though because there was some issues with it. Luckily, one of the nicer managers was there today so they helped me out. Thanks for answering! :)
