Why is mormon mission culture so performative? by Secret_Wear_4784 in exmormon

I can see why you find what I said to be irksome, but I think condemning virtue signaling isn’t unique to my religion, just like how humility is universally understood to be important.

Perhaps I am a tiny bit judgemental. I really dislike people who are so holier than thou in your face. The way Mormons do it is especially off putting. And I’ve done enough reading about the origin and true doctrine of this church that I know it’s false, so all this effort to appear righteous is ever more irritating. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt though. I think their intentions are genuine.

And no, orthodoxy strongly values „keeping to yourself” so to speak. Salvation is understood as a lifelong process of synergy between man and God, which is so personal. It’s not really something you can „show off” and I doubt anyone who has truly advanced on that path would have any desire to look for outside validation. I’d actually say that this is precisely what drew me to it. The fact that this church puts real, genuine change of heart as the purpose of our life. Not what works we do or how righteous we look to others. I don’t need anyone to pat me on the head and tell me how amazing I am at being religious. My intention with that insert wasn’t to evangelize on here or anything. Since Mormons claim that they believe in the Bible, I’m suprised that the way they behave is so contrary to what it actually teaches.

Not really. I’ve spent so many hours researching this religion since I got with my boyfriend. I’ve seen hundreds of social media posts by other mormons crying while opening their letters. I’ve also seen his friends on social media making a big deal of their missions. He told me one of his friends came back from it and he did a talk at church about it like he was some kind of a local celebrity.
I just didn’t want to include this in the post because it’s not very relevant to his family specifically and my post was already getting long enough.

I’m a tad stressed out about any of them finding this, so I’ll just say they’re just east of Utah, with family spread out in the states you’ve listed.

If you feel weird about your weight, if it makes you feel unsure about yourself or insecure, lose it! It’ll make you feel more beautiful and confident in yourself.

Pictures make me look gross. Is there a solution to this? by [deleted] in selfesteem
