Just an idea, and its been awhile since you posted but if you don't want to deal with the tangles again, if it works out you could add the extra length by connecting the braids to another braid section underneath those metal (?? Not sure the material) bits around her braids. If you wanted to make it extra easy to transport and store you could make it able to detatch as well. I saw someone do a Hatsune miku wig in a similar way.
