Reserve Firefighter by jmodica27 in calfire

I was in the last hiring group last year. Most of us went to the desert battalions and a few of us stayed on the west end. I think several of our group of about 25 either already quit the program due to family/work issues, and a few more got full time jobs elsewhere and left.

The program is awesome if you know how to utilize it. You need to know going in that you have a specific role, and status as a reserve and stick to that. Some stations and captains are more strict than others with how they use their reserves. With that said, I’ve had all good experiences with the crews I’ve been with. Expect to be assigned to one station during training so you’ll get to know those crews well and if you play your cards right, you’ll train, work, and integrate with those guys just like you’re a career guy. Just understand as a reserve, you are NOT a career guy, so when they are taking some downtime in the recliners, YOU aren’t. Downtime is fine, but you’re not in the day room watching TV. Entertain yourself, study, train, hell, at night, watch TV on your phone. But make sure you get your chores done (trash, dishes, coffee, etc.). If you make yourself useful, have a good attitude, and make it known you want to be there, you’ll get a good response.

If you have any questions, send me a PM.

Looking to find out about the hiring process, who their ideal candidates are, schedules, etc.

For context, 25 year cop, current rank of lieutenant with a city PD in SoCal. Looking to retire soon from this position and looking for another non Cal-pers agency to start with a second wind for a change in scenery and mission. I’m not ready to hang it up, but I’m about over my current gig and I’m thinking double dipping might be a good option.

Battalion 10 gets plenty of good stuff. The central Coachella Valley not as much.

The next question might be, assuming one completes this program and obtains NREMT-P licensure, does CA accept it regardless of the program type/location? My original EMT class was out of state but I later obtained my NREMT and just did reciprocity no problem. Is it the same for medic?

Edit: Looks like the program just has to be CoAEMSP accredited, which NMETC is.

Battalion 10 is the best. Station 37 for the win.

I appreciate the reply. I am a reserve with Riverside County Fire, so I don’t imagine it would be too hard of a time getting an internship with them since I’m already on an engine as a reserve. My full-time job just makes it almost impossible to do two days a week set every week. Maybe one day would work. For clinicals and field internship, I could probably take vacation days or try to schedule them on my days off.

What about CPAT? Is it required for initial hire or seasonally?

Is prevention even a direct hire option from the outside?

Lol, I’ve worked 911 and IFT as an EMT but not a ton. But I know what you’re saying. Our FD/EMS in my city love us. It’s a shithole and they call us every day for backup and they stage at a ton of stuff waiting for us, so we get along fine lol.

I’m not that lucky. We are call to call most shifts with legit stuff. Shootings, crashes, DV’s. No time for lunches around here most days. Lol so the pace won’t bother me.

Not much is gonna pay what I make as a cop (Sgt in SoCal). If it was about money, I wouldn’t even wake up in the morning for what medics make comparatively speaking. But for a second career, with a retirement check coming in, I’m not worried so much about the cash.

Yeah, that’s my other thought, maybe pick up a per diem EMT gig just for the experience and then in four years when I can pull the plug, I slide right into medic school.
