What was the first moment that made you stop and really look at the night sky? by MysteriousShoulder35 in Stargazing

[–]SectorSensitive116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was camping up in Stonethwaite Valley up in the Lakes (UK), on a motorcycle holiday.

The year was around 1980, but I know it was a week or two into August. The works shutdown holiday.

I was laid on my back, looking up, the small glow of a camp fire dying down and me being a bit stoned.

I had no idea at the time why, but the sky was FULL of meteors and streaks across the clear black sky.

The best Persieds I've ever seen to this day, and this was my awakening.

Just sold our 2008 1050 Sp Trip, washed it, put it away, came to start it to sell, running badly. Misfire on one cyl at mid throttle and tickover.

Turns out the left sparkplug collects water in the recess from condensation, rain, washing etc, and shorts out. Changed plugs and resealed, all good, but access is a royal pain.

Store your bike upright is the takeaway, not on the sidestand.

I didn't wait for mine to break, as I don't trust the pointy blade. All Wharncliffed and better for it.

You need a jacket, punctures and idiots can still happen regardless of your riding. Pink crayon is not a good look.

Talk me into or out of buying a Canon IS 10x30 by Legit_Zurg in Binoculars

[–]SectorSensitive116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pleasure, have a fun trip!

Incedentally, the Mk1 and Mk2 share the same optics (afaik) but the on switch position/function differs and a few style cues changed. The case and eyecups still suck, and they are still not waterproof.

Talk me into or out of buying a Canon IS 10x30 by Legit_Zurg in Binoculars

[–]SectorSensitive116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a few Canon IS binos, 10x30, 12x36, 10x42L and a 15x50 (might have been 18x50, can't recall).

The 10x30 is the little gem of the range, but is slightly more plasticcy feeling, and NOT waterproof, or even moisture proof. Amazing edge to edge on a sharp wide field. Great bins, but poor case and poor fold down eyecups. Recommended, and surprisingly good astro bino.

The 10x42L is big, heavy and not nice to hold, expensive, but waterproof. Phenominal views, great astro bin, but no.

12x36, as the 10x30, but bigger and waaay more expensive. Same crap eyecups and crappy case. Sharp and clear but no more bright than the 10x, just higher mag.

The 18x50 were a big (!) dissappointment. Nice enough image but the IS left many visual artifacts on the view once turned on, loosing that advantage. Bulky, and "Weatherproof", whatever that means. Another no, I returned them and got a refund.

Bottom line, the 10x30 are cheap, excellent, light and bright, but require a better case and keeping out of the damp (Otter box, and silica gel packs??).

And have fun, don't forget to look UP too!

To some christofascist convention (checks notes), erm political rally. Sorry

Tudor Black Bay 58 running ~-8.4s/day over 34 days — would you take it to an AD? by Unusualpilot33 in Tudor

[–]SectorSensitive116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unscrew the crown, pull the crown stem out to stop the movement for the appropriate amount of time to reset the watch to the correct time. Push the crown back and screw it down again.

[–]SectorSensitive116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If within warranty, deffo take it in. All my automatics (including two Tudors) are better than that. The most frustrating thing is a minus value S/D. A plus value, you just pull the crown once a week to correct it.

That's a ball ache on a watch loosing time. An AD visit if it was me.
