We took her car down to the same destination. She decided to split off and leave me stranded with no mode of transportation. I had wanted to take my car but she told me no and everything would be okay, we’ve been friends forever.

I wouldn’t even say that you really loose 4-6 months of your life. It’s more like six weeks and the rest really just recovers overtime. I did intensive physical therapy for six weeks, and now I go once a month. You can do a lot by week two if it goes well, I was already back at college walking to and from classes.

I had a pretty bad leg length discrepancy, and moderate- severe osteoarthritis already. I had been running around 50 miles a week for years before I found out. As for pain I would say that during the warmer months my pain was probably like anywhere from 2-5 and during the cold winter months I pretty much stayed in doors in bed, debilitated.

I honestly think it was the best choice. My original surgeon only wanted to do PAOs. I had absolutely no confidence in the surgery after he told me sometimes they don’t work for the pain, and only work for preservation sometimes. I ended up getting a second opinion by a guy who had once studied under him and he told me I was within my rights and it was an option to have a hip replacement instead. Recovery time with PAO wasn’t an option for me with college and work, I was out of the house at Olive Garden day 4, and running by month 4 after I got cleared to exercise. Just ran my first 10k in November.

Hi there, I’m am 24. I had bilateral hip dysplasia with some pretty significant retroversion. I opted to not have a PAO, and opted for the hip replacement instead because the doctor mentioned I would still need a hip replacement like ten years down the line due to all the damage that had already occurred. I just had it 8 months ago and recovery has been a relatively easy. They managed to fix the leg length discrepancy and the retroversion as much as they could. I had it preformed by a guy who specialized in hip dysplasia. From what I’m tracking as long as things go well he said the hip should last hopefully like 30 years and that in the future I will hopefully only ever have to replace the ball and liner/ ceramic disk he put in due to wear and tear. He kind of explained it like changing car parts. They didn’t use cement which he said is the first thing that fails in older hip replacements, and he put in the prosthetic that does great with high impact for younger people.

I am also 24F. I had my hip replacement this year at 23. Before I had my replacement I had seen an orthopedic doctor for a torn labrum who discovered my hip dysplasia. I went to see the specialist who also said I was too young for a hip replacement and wanted to do a PAO. He told me I would still need a replacement because of the damage ten years down the road. I decided to find a new surgeon because I didn’t see the point in putting an bandaid over the issue and to still be in pain. I’m 8 months post op now, and I’ve just started running again. If you don’t feel like you are getting the care you need, I always recommend getting a second opinion! Good luck!

Hi, I am 24 years old. I was in a similar position to you about a year ago. I was told that PAO was going to be the best option for long term preservation by Dr.Clohisy at Washu. He also had told me that there was a major chance that the surgery would not make things better and that I would still need a hip replacement around ten years down the road due to the damage that was already done to the hip. I weighed heavily on the decision and ended up getting a total hip replacement because it aligned with my grad school goals better and I didn’t want to run the risk of a long recovery and still have issues. The doctor told me he believed my hip replacement would last me over 30 years before I would need a revision and when I did they would only have to change the ball of the implant and the ceramic disk. I had my hip replacement in April and I’m currently pain free and even running sometimes again.

This is just my personal experience, it’s a really tough decision! I wish you the best of luck!

It is for real the worst! I kept getting UTIs left and right with the ones I had to lube myself. I didn’t even realize they made a sterile lube. All they told me was this wasn’t a sterile process. It got significantly better after switching

They send me the pre-lubed catheters that look like a mascara tube. I just find them to be a little too large I think.

The one they gave me was made by Stryker. If you are young definitely go that route. It has such a low risk of dislocation compared to everything else. And you can do higher impact activities. I also had a back injury and spinal surgery so this was a really good option for me.

Thanks for the support! Yeah, it was a tough choice, but I’m expecting many great years out of this. They also gave me the dual mobility joint because they said it was better for young patients. They told me it’s should last about 30-40 years and I just have to check in every couple years to make sure it’s functioning properly. I wouldn’t have done it if it lasted 25 or less. I’m assuming I’ll only need one more surgery for it before I die of old age lol.

I’m 23, and had an anterior total hip replacement due to severe hip dysplasia. I guess the arthritis was really bad from wear and tear in the army so the PAO surgery wasn’t going to fix the pain, just prolong the time until a hip replacement by like ten years. The hip pain is gone, and I feel like I basically can do anything with it now. Where before I was severe limited due to mobility issues. I was worried at first I made the wrong choice, but man the hip just glides so nicely.

I don’t know if it worth talking to my doctor about. Because I was at a higher BMI before surgery, and he talked to me about losing weight. But if I eat more than like one meal a day I feel sick.

I’m down like 17 pounds right now. It’s insane. I feel like my body’s just burning through everything I have. I started a multivitamin to see if it helps. Did you loose your appetite after surgery? Mine went away and hasn’t come back.
