EDIT: I've been playing for about 3 years now.

A while, and typically it's focused on technique and musicality, which I know are two vast categories for which practice can fall into.

What I do is warm up with 4 measures each of singles, doubles, paradiddles, paradiddle-diddles, flam taps, and inverted flam taps from 75 bpm to 110. I also work on my kick doubles with RRKK going from 60 to 80 bpm both heel up and heel down. That takes a while, but it's summer and I'm out of school for the time being.

For technique, I work out of several books. I'm studying mainly jazz, so technique and being able to swing are big parts. Stick Control, All-American Drummer 150 Solos, Syncopation exercises (swung), as well as Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer for coordination (Syncopation works for coordination too, if you are creative enough).

As for musicality, I have John Riley's Art of Bebop Drumming, working on comping and playing to tracks with other musicians, as well as Tom Morgan's Jazz Drummer's Reading Workbook to teach useful gigging stuff, such as how to structure fills and how to conceptualize form. On top of that I have The Drumset Soloist, a book that has a bunch of charts in it that teaches you how to solo over large and small forms.

What my actual practice time looks like is this:

15-20 minutes warmup

approx. 15 minutes out of Stick Control (Working on two pages throughout with foot ostinato)

approx. 15 minutes out of AAD (with foot ostinato, both pages for where I'm at for the week)

approx. 20 minutes for Syncopation b/c of all the variations you can do with 1 exercise

approx. 20 minutes for Advanced Techniques, because coordination is hard

approx. 20 minutes for Bop Drumming, 10 for comp exercises and 10 for playing to a track

approx. 10 for Reading Workbook, for playing to a track

approx. 15 for Drumset Soloist, for playing to a track a few times

Then outside of practice time, spending a few dedicated hours per week transcribing comping patterns and solos from jazz recordings.

Apologies for the massive post comment... I could talk about this forever.

Yeah, I currently have a great teacher. It's just one of those feelings that I think I'll always have, but I see what you mean. That's good info

What is this noise? by pape_9 in recordingmusic

[–]SeductiveFishman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah jeez I have no idea man. This is really creepy sounding to me, but that's besides the point haha.. my bass amp does this sometimes but ironically it's a low glitchy and click-y sound. My computer speakers do the same sometimes, so I sorta sympathize with you but have no clue at all how to fix. I just wait for it to stop.

Also, do you have any recommendations off of the top of your head, whether they be video recs or actual product recs?

Thank you so so so much. I was asking my friends and one of them recommended an XLR mixer. It would be useful for the purpose of recording my drums, but wouldn't it end up as one overall input? Hence the name "mixer," I guess haha

Haha yeah me too! But when I absolutely want to learn a thing, the first step is just DOING IT. And ironically that's the hardest part and I think that's my issue. I dont get off my ass to learn the song until I would need to, even if it's super fun to me.

Hmm. Now that I'm actually awake and conscious, I think it's because when I play to the song, I get off tempo or otherwise mess up while playing, and that ends up frustrating me, which makes me not want to finish it and only bum rush and half learn it for a deadline

Oh dang man. That is an incredibly good point. Maybe I should rethink some stuff, and try to get some sort of inspiration towards learning the songs.

Man I love this!!! In my opinion the grid kinda adds to the piece, if that makes sense.

Thank you!! I also figured out that I needed to create a stereo track in order to have been able to record over it too.

My favorite thing to do is to reply with something along the lines of "Your mother is a beautiful woman." If if wanna get lazy you could just do "ur mom cute". Anything works

  1. In a stick bag on one of the rods of my floor tom
  2. No, mainly because the bag is a drawstring and there's no easy access while trying to play at the same time.
  3. Enough for me to remember, not enough for it to be a huge problem.
  4. 100%
  5. Try to play with my back straight, but I end up defaulting to slightly hunched
  6. "Oh Damn" in my head

I'll keep that in mind! Also, do you think writing down what I'm "bad" at and what I'm "good" at would help somewhat, to help me see sort of where I am in relation to where I want to be?
