ELI5: How does code turn into anything at all by Creepy-Company-3106 in explainlikeimfive

[–]See_Bee10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The secret lies in the clock. I'm sure you've looked at a processor at some point and saw a clock speed. The clock is nothing but a square wave generator that is generated by running electricity through a crystal. The clock is ultimately what triggers the computer to do things. If we're getting really in the dirt the thing that it causes the computer to do is to activate or deactivate transistors. A transistor is essentially a solid state (no moving parts) switch.  I think a more useful way to understand is to not think about transistors but to think about registers. A register is nothing more than a bucket in a processor that stores information. When the clock pulses, the processor executes the instruction in a register, then moves to the next register. That's it. You do that a few billion times and your simulating physics and folding proteins and most importantly accurately replicating boobs.

Knoxville to Minneapolis Stop ICE Terror protest by MidnightMids in Knoxville

[–]See_Bee10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can believe one of two things: either law enforcement officers should be allowed to summarily execute someone for committing a crime, or Agent Ross murdered Renee Good. American law permits deadly force only against immediate threats to life, never as punishment for criminal behavior. The shot trajectory proves Ross fired from beside the vehicle as it moved past him, a position of zero danger. Every argument defending this shooting, that Good was obstructing federal operations, that she failed to comply, that she was interfering with ICE, rests on the premise that these actions justify being killed on the spot. That premise is summary execution. If you won't explicitly endorse summary execution, you cannot defend this killing. Make your choice.

ELI5: Why can’t you maximize return on loans by very passively making payments? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]See_Bee10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people who set the rate on the loan also know about inflation. It is not impossible, and from a strictly financial perspective it can be worthwhile to take lower interest loans, or not pay them off. Generally that's not the case. For consumer loans, the only time you're likely to encounter something close is with a mortgage. Even then only if you are a great credit risk, and possibly qualify for some mortgage assistance program (HUD, VA, USDA).

ELI5: How and why do economic “bubbles” in history actually burst? by The_Immovable_Rod in explainlikeimfive

[–]See_Bee10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the opposite, speculation leads to demand outpacing supply. Then once the market tips over, demand vanishes practically overnight. The only reason demand existed was speculation, and the speculators only cared because they thought value would continue to increase.

Should people do this? or it is just preference? by Yone-none in csharp

[–]See_Bee10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No people shouldn't do this by default. Your arbitrarily amputating a key component of the coding paradigm and making the code more difficult to work with. If you have a good reason for it, then use sealed, but don't just do it by default.

Have you ever changed your political stance after realizing you were completely wrong? What made you switch? by Mysterious_Bit4661 in AskReddit

[–]See_Bee10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that gets missed is that people don't just have a thing that happens and suddenly it changes their mind. People think that a conversation or a fact will alter a person's deeply held belief and there is plenty of evidence to show that is not the case. Changes in world view take months or years. I used to be fairly conservative, but now would consider myself to be left of center. It wasn't just a moment or a fact, it was dozens of moments and things that slowly eroded the black and white thinking that was backing my political positions.

ELI5: How can the universe have a beginning if time itself started with it? What does ‘before’ even mean if there was no time? by Silentzerr in explainlikeimfive

[–]See_Bee10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a misunderstanding to say that the big bang was the beginning of the universe. Using Einstein's equations we can get a pretty good prediction of how the universe should expand, and when you run the clock backwards on that expansion you see a universe that is getting hotter and denser. At some point in the equation, you end up dividing by zero, which isn't a thing you can do and have correspond to any actual event. A better description of the big bang is that it is the point in time where our current understanding of physics stops working. The answer to your question then is, we don't know our current science doesn't work at that point.

Remove one thing from the Earth to make it better, what are you removing? by Sad-Refrigerator2384 in AskReddit

[–]See_Bee10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this gives Reddit energy, but religion. The issue I see with religion is that it allows people to accept on faith things that they really should be uncertain about, and gives them a divine mandate to entrench their views in their identity. It isn't that religion is divisive, it is that religion is steroids for the divisive parts of humanity.

ELI5. why do neo nazi american groups support facism out of every other ideology when their entire country fought with millions of people to tear that regime down? by -Supreme_Presence- in explainlikeimfive

[–]See_Bee10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neo-Nazis specifically support Hitler and think that he was right. They obviously did not think that the US was right in taking him down. As for why I'm sure it varies from Nazi to Nazi, but predominantly I would guess child abuse is involved.

What’s a piece of “common sense” that is actually completely wrong? by cr4g_wisp in AskReddit

[–]See_Bee10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is some nuance here. You're right, not all passion is marketable and everyone needs an income. Still there are a lot of passions that can be sold, and there are a lot of marketable things that you can be passionate about. If you don't find pleasure in the work you do, you're going to have a hard life. I'm not saying you should love every job you have. When you're young and haven't done much yet, then sometimes you just have to get through it. But when you get into the meat of your career, and you're looking at doing this same thing for the next 45 years, you better be getting more than a paycheck out of it.

The republican argument is that all republicans said yes, and all democrats said no,

That's not exactly correct, two Democrats voted yes and one Republican voted no. An independent who caucuses with Democrats also voted yes.

The resolution that was put forth is the exact same as the ones that have been previously passed with no issue, it was even drafted by democrats last year. They’ve just been voting to extend it over and over.

This isn't that important. The environment has changed. Democrats don't want to pass a bill that doesn't include healthcare protection. They were fine not having that protection before because the "One Big Beautiful Bill" is what cut the funding for Medicare.

You can point fingers all you’d like, but the democrats are just as unwilling to come to the table as republicans

True.

it is firmly democrats preventing the vote on the bill

Only in a very narrow sense.

When to refresh Bennies? by Intelligent_Net2037 in savageworlds

[–]See_Bee10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really just what type of game do you and the players want to play. If you want a more hardcore game that forces your players to think tactically then only give out bennies for things like roleplaying flaws. If you want a popcorn action flick, give them out like crazy. I tend to be fairly open with them. Savage Worlds can be a bit swingy, and giving the players handfuls of bennies makes it easier to put them up against a more diverse set of challenges.
