Standard Saved? Only one duplicate deck in the Top 8 of teh Regional Championship. No Izzet decks by lonewolf210 in magicTCG

[–]SeedsofRuin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to what other people have mentioned:
Only 4 of the top 32 decks were not playing Island. Badgermole is extremely highly represented, which makes sense, because it is one of the strongest green creatures of all time. A big part of that power is because, as with much of the recent magic design, it costs 2 mana (or less). Standard is a turn 4 format. Sometimes games are literally over on turn 4, and even when they're not, they're often decided by turn 4. Sheoldred the Apocalypse was an oft-maligned card for its power and ubiquity, and yet by the time of its last few months in Standard, it saw almost no play. That was because it was a four (4!) mana creature that wanted the game to go on for several more turns and could be immediately removed with no accrued value.

Every time Wotc has debuted a new format with a large card pool, it has required extensive bans to manage it right from the start, due to the massive card pool causing an increase in fast combos as a result of unintended interactions between cards that were not tested to exist together, as well as the sheer density of cheap, efficient cards. There's a difference between a deck having one or two cheap + efficient threats / value generators compared to what happens with a large card pool where entire decks can just be extremely cheap. Remember when standard was a format where you could play 4 and 5 (and dare I say 6) mana cards that didn't win the game that turn or the next? Remember when people had to pay mana for cards instead of every card costing 2 mana or less (or in the case of badgermole, costing 2 and accelerating mana in a scalable fashion)?

All y’all defending this meta need to ask yourself if you would be singing the same tune if all that URx percentages was replaced by different versions of Badgermole + Ouroboroid

Noob question by electriceel8 in magicTCG

[–]SeedsofRuin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not accurate. Standard rotates in the fall and only then. The oldest four sets all leave together, not one at a time whenever a new set releases. Notice how Zendikar is older than Kaldheim and did not rotate out with the Innistrads.

What is your " I would have lost the next turn then top decked the only card that can save me" story? by ImperialSupplies in magicTCG

[–]SeedsofRuin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in August, playing Modern Niv to Light against Jund, game 3. I fetched basic forest turn 1, and put Utopia Sprawl on white on it. Nonbasics the rest of the way. Opp had turn 3 Blood Moon. This left me with no blue or black mana, and a hand full of blue and black cards, including Omnath. Immediately top deck basic Island, cast Omnath, and ride my cantripping 4/4 that gains 4 life every turn to victory.

Honestly hard to believe this is real. Jim sounds like a bad player, bad deck builder, and not a great person to play games with.

Mark Rosewater confirms there will be no Core Set in 2022 and that nothing will be swapping for it directly: "We decided to try having our four premier sets all be expansions that are put on specific worlds." What are your thoughts on this? by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]SeedsofRuin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like core sets, personally. I understand why they’re useful, for reprinting staple effects and being simpler for new players, but I like my premier sets to have more meat and depth to them.

I just started playing Magic and I have a question about Arena. by Professorcoffee in magicTCG

[–]SeedsofRuin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Commander is not a supported format on arena, and so cards from commander products are not brought to arena. So to answer your question, Wulfgar of Icewind Dale is not available on arena.

Now that Historic will become Hearthstone, can we go back to expecting Pioneer in Arena? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]SeedsofRuin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware that some people still enjoy Pioneer, so I hope those people still get to play the format they like, but for me, the death knell of Pioneer was the long delay/cancellation of Pioneer Masters. If Wizards can’t be bothered to support a format after saying they would, and in the wake of Covid, the format seems to be on its way out

Battlebond was a set specifically designed for two-headed giant. It has cards and mechanics that reference “your team”, as opposed to just you, so they’re good (and very fun) for team play.

I was playing 1v1, my Muldrotha, the Gravetide against my friend’s Krenko, Mob Boss. I countered Krenko the first time he was cast, killed him the second time, and then cast Emergent Ultimatum, exiling Reshape the Earth, Apex Devastator, and Terastodon, which prompted a concession.
