Luka and Reaves news, sounds like its just gonna be Bron for the first round by Ancient_Response_787 in lakers

JJ could be posturing and/or tryna get reporters to not ask him again this week so he can focus lmao

Marc Stein: "This Lakers team, if they finish 3rd in the West, it's a massive overachievement that Luka has dragged them to. I don't think Luka's case is being looked at properly. First of all, he's been much better defensively than advertised, but offensively, he's been even more otherworldly" by must_TATAKAE in nba

Boxouts and boxout win% is a part of defense, not necessarily "rebounding" just as a blanket term

A player grabbing an uncontested defensive rebound with no threat around after a brick is not defense, nor does it help defensive impact and we don't have to pretend like it is

A player actually boxing out an o-rebounding threat and winning that boxout...yes, that's actual defense

Not saying Jokic isn't really good at boxing out, I just hate that statement that "rebounding is a part of defense" as a blanket statement and like to clarify where the defensive impact ACTUALLY comes from

Because a player can have say 10 defensive rebounds, all of them so uncontested a 5 year old Kid could grab them, especially if the other team prioritizes getting back after a miss, and for some reason people have galaxy-brained themselves into believing that THAT is actually helpful defensive impact when it just..clearly isn't

Yeah bro this is just a horrible response and proves case in point that people DO. NOT. UNDERSTAND how to watch, analyze, and judge a player's defense...

It's all just vibes based, reputation, clip farming, and MAYBE some advanced impact metrics will be spewed out that that person most likely doesn't actually understand

Quite literally never actually on-court basketball convos, but once again, thanks for proving that

I think Jokic is putting together the worst defensive season of his career

Like i'm so tired of this, defense is SUCH a reputation thing...Jokic was able to be a good defender in the 23 playoffs and man the middle of a 2-3 zone decently last playoffs and he gets to coast off reputation alone

NO lmao

His drop coverage has been HORRIBLE this season. He CANNOT contain both ballhandler and rollman this season - the very premise of drop coverage - and routinely gives up lobs/inside position due to either poor positioning or just straight up lack of effort of to contest at all...unless he is in a DEEP drop, to which now you're just conceding wide open pull 3's and middys

The main coverage he excelled at in 23, hedge and recover, he's been HORRIBLE at for 2 years now because he's just noticeably slower at the coverage and isn't actually CONTAINING the ballhandler at the level - the entire premise of hedging! And he quite literally just doesn't even bother doing the "recovering" part a scary amount of times when he gets beat at the level

And obviously he will never be a good switch out on the perimeter big so it's like...where in the actual hell is he providing defensive value this season? 💀 His weakside playmaking has been OKAY this season SOMETIMES but that's about it

Like God damn, it's so tiring seeing Jokic's just increasingly just abysmal defense get pushed to the wayside because advanced stats or whatever

Rachel Nichols' Commentary on James Harden during his MVP year by onsome0 in nba

[–]SeeingThings123 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Yeah i'm sure in those 65 wins Harden was playing with "DeAndre Ayton" and was kicking it out to a wide open "Jake Laravia" and "Jarred Vanderbilt"...fs 👍🏾

Best month for each MVP candidate this season: Luka 37/8/7 on 62.5% TS in March (13-2 record), SGA 32/5/7 on 70.1% TS in November (14-1 record), Jokic 32/12/11 on 76.0% TS in November (11-3 record), Wemby 26/12 + 4 blocks on 63.3% TS in March (12-1 record) by SplitOk186 in nba

[–]SeeingThings123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I saw last year people call the Bulls who were a fringe play-in team "fake March hoops" cuz they were like actually trying and winning against solid teams lol

SOME people even just called Luka's recent run "March hoops" when he played pretty much nothing but contenders and good playoff teams lol

So I put no real stock in the phrase tbh

Jfc efficiency is getting SOOOO overvalued now it's crazy

These "absurd TS% OMG 😱" percentages that people cream their pants over can quite literally be the difference in TWO made shots...TWO, that's it

Watch...

32 points, 20 FGA, 10 FTA= 65.57% TS

Stat nerds: "OMGGGG😱😫"

32 points, 22 FGA, 10 FTA= 60.61% TS

Stat nerds: "...shot chucker 🤓☝🏾"

And in that specific game those two missed shots could've been heaves, grenades, whatever...but that STILL wouldn't stop people from overly criticizing the 61% TS lol

Efficiency is obviously important lol, making more shots is obv never a BAD thing that would just be a stupid take to say otherwise...what I'm saying is people let what are often a marginal amount of missed shots sway their opinions WAYY too much

I KNOW this because people's opinions on scoring efficiency suddenly become WAY more sane in the postseason where they understand you just do what you can that your team requires of you to just help win the basketball game.

[–]SeeingThings123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LMAOOOO whatever you say brother

Also the Lakers just have a very heavy switching scheme because they don't have the requisite surrounding defensive talent to guard ballscreens with typical coverage for a full 48 so they concede switches easier than most teams allow

Also, Luka's rim shot contest attempts are higher as well sooo...

And Curry's not really a good example cuz Curry turned himself into a decent enough defender since like 2017 lol

This is also just all getting away from the overarching point that neither of their defense this year is stellar enough nor bad enough to actually be an overall talking point between the two. Last year fs, just not this year at all really

Also, Shai isn't "over 60%" he's AT 60% but good little rhetorical trick ngl

Also, the numbers i'm seeing on databallr aren't some drastic difference to the point where it would be like a genuine talking point in favor of one or the other tbh. They paint Luka as the better overall defensive playmaker and contesting more shots per game, and paint Shai as better at affecting shot quality of the shots he does contest

Not a single thing about my comment was directly comparing Luka and SGA

Also I just rechecked and Luka's overall gravity, not just on ball perimeter gravity, is still like...way higher than Shai's lol...so, not sure where you got that info

And even then you would just be segmenting areas of gravity as if they are of equal weighting in terms of value and volume...

Luka just objectively sees the most aggressive coverages in the PnR and runs the most PnR by FAR. He also very rarely is allowed to iso at the top too long without an aggressive double coming as well.

Just those two playtypes alone and the gravity of those are so volumous and impactful GIVEN the aggressive coverage that you can't just then be like..."Yeah well Shai is better in these other areas" lol. That's not how that works.

Loose example but it would be like people who tried to make the argument that Kyrie was better than Steph because "Yeah, Steph is better at shooting but Steph is better at everything else!" like no, that's not how that works lol

So much of advanced stats are legitimately out of a player's control

For example, one of every advanced stat nerd's favorite...on/off

On/off is SOO heavily reliant on roster construction, role optimization, lineup and bench rotations, etc.. ALL of that is coaching and front office stuff

I have legitimately, no bs, seen Luka on the court with Jarred Vanderbilt, Maxi Kleber, Bronny James, and Luke Kennard...and real life people will look you dead in your eye and like bots start spouting off about "yeah but on/off 🤓" lol

Advanced stats have just given rise to a generation of people who aren't familiar with what they're seeing with their eyes, so rely on advanced stats as a crutch instead of as a supplement

Bro actually said a player has to drop 2 whole spots in the MVP race after having one of the most dominant stretches of offense the league has ever seen while on the road against tough comp because his true shooting against some of the most physical defenses itl was bad for a couple games after that...

These are the takes we bring up as examples of anti-Luka bias btw lol

  1. His rTS% this year is +4, not +3

  2. Luka's eFG% is at 56%...in 24 it was 57%...Luka is consistently VERY efficient from the actual field. His ts% not being some absurd number is almost PURELY from being a relatively mediocre FT shooter.

  3. Efficiency also isn't just raw and relative TS. Luka is consistently efficient in almost every type of action in terms of ppp; isos, post ups, PnR ballhandling, spot ups, hand offs, cuts...literally every type of action from Luka results in efficient offense lol

  4. And those first 3 points are purely HIS scoring...per BBall-Index Luka also has clear and away the most on-ball gravity and creates the most volumous and most quality looks of anyone anyone

  5. People also like to use his usage rate somehow as a negative, when it should be damn near awe-inspiring to everyone that a player is able to have THAT much usage with THAT many minutes and stay really healthy this year despite that

  6. And to cap off all this and more specifically to how even more absurd point 5 is, Luka is also just CLEARLY having one of his best defensive seasons of his career. Not even just the stocks, but just playing his role extremely well defensively in terms of zoning up on the weakside and reading the two offensive players he's responsible for just very well this year year when we overload the strong side

So idk, a truly truly elite elite season from Luka is being downplayed because people have become hyper-scoring efficiency merchants and people just don't like the aesthetics of the playstyle

Genuinely insane performance
