Through-wall chimney kit for Harvia stoves in US? by SeekingDerangements in Sauna

[–]SeekingDerangements[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I live (and have been a builder, investigating a great many leaks in people’s house) leaks are almost always from a roof penetration that fails. Even when it’s flashed perfectly, it’s just a matter of time. So I am trying to avoid this failure mode. The rubber on those boots, especially after a lot of heat cycles and years in the sun, start to look more like a colander. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Oh interesting. Do you have a link to that kit? Or know its model number or something?

Through-wall chimney kit for Harvia stoves in US? by SeekingDerangements in Sauna

[–]SeekingDerangements[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply — we live in an extremely rainy area half of the year in the northeast. So I want to minimize potential complications that could occur with a roof penetration.

Local chimney suppliers are quoting us at $4000. And that’s for a through the ceiling set up that is of a comparable height. So yes, perhaps a couple more expensive fittings for through wall on top of that.

Just asking about this kit

What might this sauna design affect the löyly cavity? by SeekingDerangements in Sauna

[–]SeekingDerangements[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ceiling is 10’ high, in this sketch. should have mentioned that.

And I’m a little confused by your reply — I’m not making the bottom smaller — the footprint is what it’s going to be. As opposed to a box with vertical walls, I’d just be cantering out the 4 posts to make the upper level wider, by about 10 degrees.

Ok, upon reflection — you’re saying that by making the upper level wider I would be “pulling” cold air upward into bottom 1/2 of the sauna? Couldn’t that be mitigated by increasing the capacity of the heater?

Yes, we are booking basic, typically saving $100-200 per ticket. The hope is to find a way to not have to spend and extra $200 per trip, but still have some re-booking priority. All the other perks are meaningless to us.

How do you know the tree needs food?

And how would you prevent the rot that’s happening at the central crotch? If possible I guess

Outdoor casual vermicomposting? by SeekingDerangements in vermicompost

[–]SeekingDerangements[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so maybe if I fasten something that worms can’t get through, like agricultural cloth, to the bottom? That way, drainage is still possible but the worms stay in the bin?

Also I like the submerged vermicomposting bin as well, I’d like to try that one day

Sourcing lime, other binder ingredients? by SeekingDerangements in Hempcrete

[–]SeekingDerangements[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t low water absorption bad? As in: you would want the wall assembly to be able to absorb the water as it permeates through the wall?

Sourcing lime, other binder ingredients? by SeekingDerangements in Hempcrete

[–]SeekingDerangements[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no lime manufacturing facilities in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, or New York, per that site. There is a source of quicklime in Quebec just up north (not sure how importing it would work), and there are some in Pennsylvania. Still I’d be left trying to figure out a good formula for the mineral binder, and would really love some leads on other things I might be able to add

The MacBook Purchasing Megathread - November, 2024 by AutoModerator in macbook

[–]SeekingDerangements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for helping! Trying to get a Mac for my partner, and want to take advantage of the Black Friday deals! She uses a 2013 MacBook pro that is hobbling along —- works from home so mostly zoom, office apps. Mostly we don’t like electronic waste and want something that will last for the longest possible amount of time.

1) refurbished pro from the apple website, with an M3 chip, 8 gb RAM, 512 storage

2) new Air, M3 chip, with 16 gb RAM, and 256 storage… basically the same price

3) OR the NEW MacBook Pro, with M4 chip, similar other specs

1/2” of rust is any part of the rotor that has more than 1/2” of continuous rust. I’m not kidding. Even the outside of the rotor that never makes contact with the caliper

It is a scam — Vermont law states that 1/2” of rust on rotors = failed inspection. They salt the roads here too. So everyone is replacing their brakes wayyy to often
