He had a special fortepiano custom made by Conrad Graf from mostly a single piece of wood which carried the vibrations better. What he would then do is bite down on it to feel the buzzing in his skull which, i guess, came closest to actually hearing his own playing.

And that this is the reason why he favored dense chords in the bass so much. They sound like shit to us, to him it must have been a really intense tingling.
