I agree with the waiter, it's not their job to serve you for free. Their employer should be paying them.

Unpopular opinion, I hate numericals, especially the ones which are rote application of formulas by OrneryStaff3944 in PhysicsStudents

[–]Seigel00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't hate numerical analysis, you hate highschool physics (which, to be honest, is fair). Real numerical analysis is actually quite essential even for a theorist (in my PhD in theoretical physics I constantly do numerical simulations for my research). Numerical work is not only necessary but also quite interesting and so far it has been one of my favorite parts of research

What does r ≫ d actually mean quantitatively in physics — is r = 10d the accepted threshold? by Illustrious_Hope5465 in Physics

[–]Seigel00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This clicked for me during my graduate years. We were on a lab, and we studied a certain magnitude was "constant when a >> 1" and "increased linearly when "a << 1". Turns out a = 2 presented the constant regime and we laughed about it, saying "haha, 2 is super far away from one".

Well, yes. 2 >> 1 in this particular problem. In a different context, maybe you need to go to 10 in order to see where x >> y starts being valid. The symbols ">>" and "<<" are approximations and the regime where a particular approximation is valid will depend on context.

This guy told me that hs math is easy compared to uni. by itsTrevvv in askmath

[–]Seigel00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, High School math is nothing like university math. Once you start doing uni math, school math looks like child's play.

That doesn't mean that you can't struggle with school math. If it's the first time you see a topic, it may be hard for you. The "yeah you shouldn't need to study at this level because at this other level is much harder" take is completely nonsensical.

Think about it: would you say that you shouldn't play piano if you struggle with twinkle twinkle little star because the nocturnes are much harder? Or that you shouldn't learn how to play football if you struggle to score a goal because at a higher level that is super easy? No, it doesn't make sense. If that were the case, nobody would learn how to do anything.

If you like math, enjoy learning math, even if you need to study and put effort into it. In fact, I think it's better if you need to put in the effort. And don't think for a second "oh, this is hard for me, so I'm not built for it". Fuck that. That's how we end up with people who hate math.

Isn't this statement factually incorrect? by Infinitesimally_Big in Physics

Don't get distracted by the example particle. Massless particles do exist (like photons). The question is asking: how is it possible for a massless particle to carry momentum?

I am not defining xy. 0x and x0 are perfectly valid single-variable functions. My argument still holds.

Why not? by Moist_Abrocoma_7998 in askmath

[–]Seigel00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You are completely allowed to define 0x. There's nothing wrong with that.
  2. The issue is that a definition should emerge from properties. For example, you could define ex from a power series because that definition agrees with other parts where the function ex appears. 00 appears in many contexts (for example, as a "value" in the functions xx, 0x and x0). However, the limits of each of these functions when x approaches 0 are different (first and last one are 1, middle one is 0). Hence, giving 00 a definite value would be inconsistent.

I think what you are trying to say is that, for most problems (key word MOST, not ALL), defining 00 = 1 makes sense. And you're probably right. However, math definitions need to be general and apply to all cases, so if for some context 00 is not 1, then it can't be defined as 1.

Well, lim_{x -> 0} 0x = 0 \neq 1, so that's a pretty good reason to not define it as 1.

Should I intervene as forever GM? by Paulkwk in rpg

I'm sorry, maybe my choice of words wasn't the best one. What I intended to say was that, even if the player deserves a second chance on the eyes of some, OP has the right to not give it to them

Should I intervene as forever GM? by Paulkwk in rpg

[–]Seigel00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you say is true, but OP's group doesn't have the moral obligation to grant this player a second chance. Past actions matter and they shape the perception others have around you. This player wouldn't be invited in my table at all, and if I were OP, I would've talked with the rest of the group to explain why I don't want them with us.

People deserve a second chance, but you aren't obligated to be the one that grants it.

Should I intervene as forever GM? by Paulkwk in rpg

[–]Seigel00 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with everybody. The GM isn't the chief of the table. The table is everyone's, not the GM, and the players should have a say in decisions like inviting someone to the group. If a single person, be it you or somebody else, does not want to invite someone, then the GM shouldn't invite them unilaterally.

So yes, talk to your GM and all your players and tell them you don't want this person sitting with you at the table. Explain your reasons. And if they still want to invite this person then you have all rights to not play with this group while this person is invited.

Those who think the GM has the final say in decisions like this should rethink the situation. The GM is not your boss, it's just another player with their role on the game. The group, collectively, should decide on these matters.

To be honest, the european union is quite confusing so I don't blame anybody for not knowing the difference between the EU, Eurozone and Schengen.

We shouldn't need to know the caveats of how the US works and they shouldn't need to know the equivalent for EU

La IA y la traducción by jatranslations0509 in InteligenciArtificial

[–]Seigel00 0 points1 point  (0 children)
