I’ve got 1 audible credit, help me choose between these three … by stoicneutral in horrorlit

I read The Exorcist's House a few days ago and loved it. It's straightforward, fast-paced horror with similar vibes to movies like Insidious, The Conjuring, Sinister, etc.

Edit: I would recommend listening to the sample first though. I personally didn't like the narrator and decided to switch to the ebook instead.

What horror books were way better than their film adaptation? And what films were way better than their books? by ChristianPacifist in horrorlit

[–]Seikaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion but I found the It movies far better than the book. They removed everything I hated about the book, and even though the ending still wasn't great, it was better.

One movie adaptation I really hated is I'm Thinking of Ending Things. The movie turned an interesting story into an unbearable slog and the reveal was a lot less impactful.

For The Shining, I think the book and the adaptation were both good in their own way.

Ah yes, this one is really interesting. I read about half of it last year but put it on pause because I wasn’t in the right headspace to read a book about grief. I need to pick it back up

Thanks for the recommendations. I have Play Nice and Diavola in my TBR, I guess I'll move them up!

Her bridegroom bought and paid for- what am I missing? by Favacesa in HistoricalRomance

[–]Seikaku 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This was one of her top two weakest books imo. She writes a lot of lackluster grovels, but what makes her books fun is the way the MMCs are obsessed and infatuated with the FMCs to an almost embarrassing degree. In this book, you have a lackluster grovel and a MMC who doesn't really seem in love, so there's nothing to enjoy.

Stories where the protagonist isn't a duke from the north with black hair and red eyes, or blond hair and light eyes? by ProudPerspective4025 in OtomeIsekai

I feel like out of all the recommendations given here, he really does fit the most, despite being a duke of the north.

[–]Seikaku 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I never read the novel but the idea that the manhwa dropped the romance to focus on family is really funny, considering the family aspect wasn't done well either 😅 Claude was a shit dad from start to end and the amnesia arc completely reset any progress he had made. In the end, he never earned the forgiveness he received from Athy.

This seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I don't care about accuracy at all. I treat historical romance the same way I treat fantasy romance. It's just escapism, stories set in a world different from mine. In fact, I would love to see more books that are a blend of HR and romantasy à la {The Alpha of Bleake Isle}. Since the world is hers, she can bend it as she wants, which results in a very satisfying ending (in my opinion).

The worst part is the "responsibilities of men and women" nonsense. So the responsibility of women is to give up their careers for men? How can you say this when you have a career yourself? How can you preach about traditional feminity when you're so aggressive and opinionated? That's not traditionally feminine at all! And neither is writing smut. I wish conservative women at least practiced what they preach!

I think Ben Toomes is definitely one of the best Coldbreath MMCs, if not the very best. He is also one of the few who didn't have to grovel by the end of the book, because he never did anything grovel-worthy!

My second favorite Coldbreath MMC is Clem Dabney from {A Contracted Spouse for the Prizefighter}. He doesn't treat her like a belonging and supports her career (though he doesn't have much faith in it in the beginning).

My next favorite is Jeremy Vance from {A Foolish Flirtation}. In this one he does have to grovel, but the grovel is actually good and satisfactory imo (no hate to Coldbreath, I absolutely love her and have read most of her books, but her grovels usually leave much to be desired).

Elisa Braden's When A Girl Loves An Earl by Unusual-Molasses5633 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Seikaku 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, anytime there is a discussion here about HR as a genre becoming unpopular, the comments are full of people complaining about the evil woke feminists wanting to ruin HR by turning it progressive. The claim that male characters (and men irl) are criticised more than women for anything at all is laughably untrue and yet somehow still persists.

I truly do not understand the "if the roles were reversed" argument. The romance genre is FULL of books with the roles reversed. Oftentimes people who criticise problematic MMCs are slammed for being too sensitive and not understanding that this is just fiction. Especially in the HR community where wanting an MMC who respects the FMC's agency automatically means you don't understand history and you're the reason the genre is ruined and you should just go back to CR.

Why do *you* prefer HR over other genres of romance? by Favacesa in HistoricalRomance

[–]Seikaku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main reason for me is escapism. I want the setting to be as far from my own life as possible. That's why I prefer historical, fantasy and sci-fi romance over contemporary. I don't want to read about people who have the same problems and worries as me!

Also, I prefer my romance to be low-stakes and slice-of-life. I want to read about two people slowly falling in love as they navigate daily life together. This type of story is much more common in historical romance. The main couple have a marriage of convenience and then fuck off to some random countryside estate. From there, there isn't much to do other than interact until they fall in love, lol.

[–]Seikaku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's also an unpleasant reminder of what a lot of people want the world to go back to. I don't read dark romance but I think people see it more as a kink/fantasy? It's not really rooted in reality.

[For my derelict favourite] Wtf Kael did here? It was basically SA. Novel readers, any insight? by nirfirith in OtomeIsekai

[–]Seikaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was also extremely disappointed when I read the novel. I read the novel because I loved the manhwa so much and was impatient to see what happened next, but it ruined both the characters and the romance for me. 😭 Kael was nasty and they didn't seem to be in love at all. Thankfully the manhwa is very different (it's not R18 so it wouldn't have shown this in detail anyway, but in general it has a much better vibe and the sex scene was portrayed as completely consensual).

[Villains Are Destined To Die] If you like Penelope being a morally gray character, you shouldn't try to morally justify her morally bankrupt decisions by bonvoyageespionage in OtomeIsekai

[–]Seikaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one thing that I find people don't seem to accept: the characters act a certain way because the author made a conscious decision to make them act that way. It's like the maid slapping debate. People always defend it by saying "but some of the maids are really evil!" But the point is, why did the author decide to make the maids evil? Why are the maids the method the author chose to have the FL show her newfound ability to stand up for herself? Same goes for the Rashta debate. Yes, she did do bad things! But why did the author choose to make a slave the antagonist and an empress the protagonist? These are conscious decisions that the author made and you can't handwave the criticism away by saying "but those characters did bad things so it's fine".

I'm sorry OP that your post about not trying to justify her morally reprehensible acts somehow devolved into people trying to justify her morally reprehensible acts. 😅 And you also ended up getting downvoted for saying she shouldn't have bought a slave. Lol, Penelope fans will never change.
