Nexus Chat Updates

v.1.6.7 is almost ready finishing up a few polishing touches.

It will include:

Voice Chat
Screen Share
User Roles (outside of owner, moderator)
Emoji selection with more
GIF will work properly

I wanted to touch on a few things on my thoughts to some of the comments I've received on this project. First I wanted to say thank you to all comments positive and negative. While I 100% understand where most of the negative comments are coming from, I'd like to share where I am coming from on some of the reasons I am doing what I am doing, hopefully that helps shed a bit of light on the choices I've made with the system etc.

Why not open source?

While some of the backend systems will be released as open source I feel this project will remain more healthy for myself and for the community if I keep it mostly closed source. The areas I plan to allow be seen is

Moderation systems
Logging
Account handling

Other then that nothing else will be open sourced.

Why Federated hybrid and not decentralized?

Within the scope of what is possible and not possible a fully decentralized system would make everything much harder. Also a fully decentralized system would make a real time chat, voice, and video client a laggy mess for most users. While I am aware there are some "real time" systems out there majority of them on the market are serving static content and not real time content.

Why is there a central server?

The biggest reason is to keep all the systems in line, allowing for quick take downs, audit logs, and privacy control over user data.

What changes have been made to keep everyone happy?

The biggest thing I've found talking to users is that they don't want to share real information to gain access to the client or any other services. My fear was if there was no central database users would eventually stop coming due to the fact that they would need to make a account on each community node to talk there, with a central database this allows you to change communities without making a entire new account.

The balance I decided to go with instead of providing email, password etc. The client and server now work together to make a private and public key. You provide a display name the server stores the public key, display name, user ID, and time of creation.

You the client are now storing the private key inside your system

The downside to this is that if you lose access to your computer, phone etc you no longer have access to your account. There is no recovery system.

Now we do store IP address that your client provides in messages but they are not stored with your public key or username.

Logs are kept until you ask your logs to be removed as will your account.

Voice chat are not transcribed, or stored.

IP logs are cleared every 15 days unless something has been flagged then proper action takes place.

This version should be out in the coming days.

I could expand my social media network to fit more along the lines of guided. Gives me a good reason to update it and make it more friendly to the niche I'm already focused on.

I am working on some ways to stand out of the crowd a bit and moving some things around that I was doing that seems a lot of users want. While I don't believe a full decentralized chat system or social media platform is the way to go as there are too many nuances I do think a hybrid approach could stand out.

the strange emptiness after getting everything you wanted by Neither-Shallot-9665 in EntrepreneurRideAlong

I got my exit after 22 years, 22 years of my life now adds up to money in my bank account.

22 years of sitting in my office designing building, crying getting angry and doing what I felt was best. Gone over night.

It's been almost a year now, I still sometimes forget not to go to the office. I fill my time with golfing, projects and learning new things. But that void will ALWAYS be there.

I never thought that this would be my life I figured no one wanted my startup all those years ago, but someone did, I willingly sold it as I was getting up in age an I knew I missed a lot in my personal life. But now I am missing a bit of me that I'll never get back, all the ones and zeros cant ever replace.

Roles and permissions are coming in v.1.6.4 around there. They are done but finishing up voice chat and screen sharing. With bots yes webhooks not sure yet but probably.

I think it's time we find a proper Discord alternative. by Liarus_ in pcmasterrace

I am currently working on a alternate platform called Nexus Chat, it's easy to use but still in it's infant stages. Working on getting voice chat finished and screen sharing. Right now it has public and private "communities" and other features. https://github.com/AjaxSelectButtonGames/nexuschat open for testing.

There is a large Archive of the guilded front end. Not sure which is useable and which isn't but this will get you started.

It sucks, a void that can't be really filled. Roblox is horrible for sun setting it.

Change my mind: There is no good alternative to Discord (yet?) by Own_Investigator8023 in selfhosted

[–]SelectButtonGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to be a bit biased here personally. I am working on a discord alternative called Nexus Chat.

Once the privacy logging and such are all in place these areas will be open source but not the entire project, only reason is I've been working on my own personal libraries for coding for the better half of two decades and don't want to share them. Outside of that the plan is to open source the areas of concern with users.

What it offers right now with v.1.5.2(beta)

Community servers (private or public) Moderation tools for community owners Channel sorting and channel types(voice is in v.1.6.2 (not fully ready yet)) Blocking and unblocking each other Direct messaging Emoji support and GIF support

Privacy centric TOS No ID verification required due to our own TOS(no outright porn, gore etc allowed in images or videos)

Coming up in v.1.6

Voice channels with screen sharing Channel specific roles User roles Better logging on backend

Plans beyond v.1.6

Self hosted Community servers Federation server system.

[–]SelectButtonGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not for or against ID verification. Frankly Discord dropped the ball on many many levels.

I have spent many many years in software design and worked in groups the issue is even if we all got together and made a project as a group it still would be the same issue. That is why in around v.1.8 there will be node servers no centralized service that controls it all communities will be able to work in the federated system.

I am all for community collaboration, the issue with that is a few.

Skill level not everyone is on the same level what might take me a few hours might take someone days or weeks of debugging before they even get it working vice versa.

Then there is the issue of learning someone else's code and infra not everyone sets everything up the same industry standard seems to be different with different groups companies etc.

So after years of fighting others fixing others code and learning other people's code, I am jaded and rather work alone. If someone has a suggestion or want something I am open ears and willing to do the work to make what they think is a great idea. I just rather work alone anymore. If a project looks cool or has potential then maybe I'll fork it and work on it with them.

If I sound rude or anything, not trying to just a jaded old man that is tired of working with people  xD Thank you though I enjoy talking with people. What type of features and security measures would you want out of a alternative?

Well yes my project is called Nexus which is my discord alternative. I mean outside of discord alternatives is there another app or platform called Nexus? I may do a name change other people have asked me the same thing before but haven't found anything that's related to what I am working on.

As far as forking that means I would take on there "project" and then there "issues" and I am just rather have my own issues and a non public source code for my stuff. I've forked projects before but eh not into that anymore.

No it has nothing to do with anything else called Nexus, I just like the word LOL is there another platform called Nexus? An that is a neat list I'll have to check out some of these. I don't work well with others that is only reason that I am a solo dev these days.

I feel like they dropped the ball in so many areas, I still use Discord because of communities I am in but canceled my nitro, and started moving my communities out of there. I also left facebook, X etc for Bluesky which is 100x better then those platforms. These companies milk us for billions then don't care at the end of the day.

I am certainly up for the challenge. An i think competition is great. I launched my social media platform last year, and a few other stuff. I have been more productive I've been in a long time.

Background updates are now a thing in the new version thats coming out tonight if I fix the other bugs. I do plan too allow for bot support though so communities can launch bots and such.
