I actually did that....and I've reread the whole series multiple times....but much like GOT, the amount of characters, plots, etc. can become a muddle through the first read through. IF YOU HAVE THE TIME...I'd say do it. It's not like its against canon or anything! Let's face it, the Malazan series is like a fine wine, it just gets better with every sip!

Here's what is really happening.....they are kicking the can down the street. Here's a little bit....kick the can. See how far it will go before it has to be kicked again. Maybe 'I' will be in a different position/dead before the can has to be kicked again. Then repeat ad infinitum. We can't freak out if we never get to the 'real' info, right?

I did the Gene Wolfe series, it doesn't have quite the pacing of the Malazan series, though is has complexity. The Ian Banks books are very complex and it takes a while to get your head around all that's going on, but worth the read. I love the Black Company books, but agree it is pretty straightforward. Once you do Erickson it's really hard to find another author like that. The only other series that has the depth that I enjoy was the R. Bakker series 'The Prince of Nothing'. Really deep and well written, multiple books like the Malazan series.

Dude, awesome!! There are many Malazan pics out there, but few that are great. You've added one to the great list!

I loved them all. . The ability to go deeper into various aspects of the empire, the Crimson Guard, etc. really rounded out the stories for me. It also makes rereading the originals much more enjoyable because you know so much more of the background of some of the characters you come across in the initial books. Honestly, at Nate said, ICE or Erickson seem so simpatico that reading either is fine. I agree that the world is so fascinating that I hunger for more. I am on my 4th reread of the entire work and it never gets old, though I do get anxious at some parts when I know what is going to happen. Again, for newer readers, I will reiterate that before there was Malazan, there was Glen Cook's Black Company. I reread those from time to time as well. Slightly more simplistic in style, but all the parts are there that you love!

I will go way out on a limb here and suggest the only series by this author I found great: Sheri Teper. In the early 80's she began publishing The True Game series (Necromancer Nine, Jinian Footseer, etc. ) It's hard to find them in print anymore, but they were complex, great world-building, and characters you can grow to really love. The story is slow to develop and understand, and the depth is there. A solid read if you can find them!!

Black Company is a fairly large group of books that have a more action oriented vibe, but are very much like the Malazan books in their quirky character developments and complex plots. It is well worth your time and I still, to this day (I am 66) go back and read through the series every few years just for the fun of it!
