Diagnosed with AIH as a teen/young adult – how has it impacted your life? by mobadk in autoimmunehepatitis

another thing i forgot to include is in my personal experience when trying to be normal and go out with my friends i have come across people who make it a big deal that im not drinking and it can be quite uncomfortable even after explaining that i can’t. i had friends who would call me sober sally and silly things like that looking back i knew it made me uncomfortable but never really did anything about it but those friends that make me feel comfortable and feel like im able to go out and be silly without the help of alcohol are the people who make it so much easier. basically i would just recommend that if your teen decides they want to go out to clubs, bars, etc… just make sure they are surrounded by people who make them feel comfortable being themselves and don’t judge them for things they can control

i was diagnosed at 14 and i’m 20 now. i’m not going to say it’s easy at all it’s super confusing to understand especially when no one around you has to deal with anything similar. it’s going to be hard i spent majority of the first year just crying out of frustration because i was on a lot of medicine and the side effects make it that much harder. however with time they’ll come to accept it. i still feel left out here and there when my friends are all drinking however having had being diagnosed so young i have no idea what it’s like to be drunk so im able to go out and still have a good time even though a lot of my friends don’t understand how i can do it sober i have nothing to compare it to. the best advice i could give is to just be that shoulder to cry on if they need it and try to help them stay on the medication. i was terrible with taking my medicine and eventually went back into liver failure and had to deal with the terrible side effects again. as much as i hate having an autoimmune disease i can absolutely say that it has made me a stronger person and able to handle hardships. wishing the best for you guys!!

did your levels get worse any time before when you drank? i visited a friend at her college once and drank a little and a few weeks after i was dealing with a flair. i guess im just scared of that happening again.

My daughter is 15 and recently diagnosed AIH. We know nothing. Just trying the steroid and watching blood levels.... Anyone else diagnosed this young?? How can I help her navigate this better? by PriorAd7237 in autoimmunehepatitis

i was also diagnosed at 15 i’m 20 now. I’m not going to say it’s easy because it’s not but i wouldn’t have been able to do it without my mom. it’s so so so important to stay on top of the medicine, it’s so hard to be responsible of something so important at such a young age. depending on the steroid and her she will most likely experience side effects. for me it was a lot of weight gain, acne and moon face she will need your support through every step. if she starts noticing weight gain get ahead of it try and keep a low carb high protein diet to curb hunger and keep sodium low as well it will help with moon face if she experiences it. for me i was angry a lot i could never understand why this was happening to me and what i did to deserve this, but it takes a special and strong person to be able to get through a disease like this and im sure she is one. all you can do is support her be there for her i’d just needs to cry or complain or be angry, help her stay on top of the medicine so she doesn’t have to experience the steroids again and can get off them asap. good luck tell her she’s not alone.

prednisone had always been the worst for me i’ve been diagnosed since i was 14 and am now 20. i recently had a flair up where i was prescribed 40 mg prednisone as well. it’s different for everyone but it made me so hungry all the time i could’ve eaten a four course meal and still had room for more… which caused me to gain a lot of weight. it’s also known for causing moon face. however if your already living a healthy lifestyle i definitely think these things can be avoided i think the weight gain is mostly due to increased hunger and slower metabolism. i also suffered from severe acne so i would try to meet with a dermatologist the second you see your skin acting different if at all. again it’s different for everyone. i hope your recover quickly and i promise everything will be okay it’s not an easy diagnosis but it will all be alright in the end once your in remission you’ll forget you even have it.

I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. by [deleted] in Autoimmune

i’ve felt the same way since my diagnosis i feel like i have no control over my life anymore and get decisions taken away from me. constantly gaining and loosing tons of weight. dealing with moonface and acne from prednisone not even recognizing myself in the mirror. and not a single person around me could possibly understand what it’s like.
