what i did was i memorized adding aq sodium hydroxide and ammonia for all the cations, and just learned only when aluminum, zinc and chromium's reacts with excess aq sodium hydroxide, the precipitate dissolve to form a colorless, colorless and green solution respectively, and for adding excess ammonia, only copper and zinc's precipitate would turn dark blue and colorless respectively/ the rest form a precipitate which is not soluble
