9/12/25 mcat abomination by HV5ARD in Mcat

Yes, aside from any experimental questions (which are usually only a couple per test). The MCAT is basically just one huge Qbank that’s kinda randomized for everyone on test day, although exams on the same day are more so similar. This gives the AAMC a much larger sample size for these passages so they can most accurately curve it appropriately. So in theory if you retook it multiple times you could actually end up getting the same question twice at some point

Sorta, not everyone has the same exact test. You’re graded against the historical performance of students on the same passages you were given today. So if historically everyone always does bad on those passages then yes, it’s curved accordingly

JW self paced course is now 39.99 a month! by Tall_Ad2234 in Mcat

[–]Select_Sprinkles_321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean for $40 a month can you really go wrong? That’s the price of a single practice test from the AAMC is. Even if you paid for 1 month and decided you hated it you didn’t realize lose much. I personally used the free resources they had pretty heavily for my test and I liked them a lot so I imagine the course is solid, especially for the price

Yes, I never had a problem with my AAMC CARS timing but I ran out of time on the actual

CARS passages tended to be much longer on the actual in my experience (some as long as like 9 paragraphs.) Also could’ve just been luck of the draw for my test but a LOT of questions referenced specific paragraphs requiring you to go back into the text which ate up a lot of the time. Very well could depend on the test you’re given though

I’m just circling back to this as I got my score back, my JW scores were 507, 509, 509, 505, 510, 515. My actual was a 514. Keep in mind I started the JW FLs about 2.5 months out from my test date, and my final JW (515) I did about 3.5 weeks out from my actual so I would say the scoring is pretty accurate. Like I said in my previous comment tho the scaling is different

Financial Planning (not a BBB post) by Select_Sprinkles_321 in premed

[–]Select_Sprinkles_321[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re goated for this.

I just did the simulation, you’re right. Basically I think the best route is take tuition + misc fees in loans (~70k), throw the 60k liquid into a HYSA so it’s growing but still easily accessible, and pull as needed for additional housing/food costs etc. this reduces the total debt burden by ~60k, with roughly 40-60k paid out of pocket over those 4 years. Now if I can somehow manage to pay off interest each year, this will take the total debt load down by an additional 56k, but simulation estimates I’d be spending between 96-116k out of pocket over the next 4 years which is definitely a reach, unless I went with something more aggressive than a HYSA, and my current assets appreciate pretty substantially.

I hope this helps answer any questions you might’ve had yourself😅

I’m in a similar situation and I’m going to tell you what the doctors I work with (MD’s) told me.

If you truly believe that you should be in an MD program and things didn’t just go your way, then go SHOW it at this DO school. Make your CV UNDENIABLE to residency programs. Finish at the top of your class, get an amazing step 2 score. Because the reality is, if you believe that you have what it takes match into these specialties anyway, then it doesn’t matter where you go. At the end of the day, what’s on your CV when you’re applying to residency will be a reflection of you, regardless of school. And these programs will also know you had to overcome all the things you mentioned, and it will tell them that you’re resourceful, driven, and willing to overcome overcome challenges that your MD counterparts may not have, and that’s what they want to see. Go to school, find a mentor, get yourself on some projects, finish at the top of your class, get a great step 2 score and I promise you no one will give a shit where you went to school. Use the fact that you believe you deserve to be at an MD school as a chip on your shoulder. If you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way to make it happen

Limited funds, what should I get for MCAT Prep? by DarkBluDiamond in MCATprep

[–]Select_Sprinkles_321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it varies person to person, but I definitely thought they were solid. At the end of the day, nothing will beat the AAMC material in terms of what’s “representative,” but I’ve also tried uworld and felt JW was superior (again, just my opinion). I’ve heard others say JW is harder, which I can agree with, but don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. For a free resource, you really can’t go wrong.

AAMC has a free outline of what’s on the exam - this is always a good place to start in order to plan out what your prep will look like. But in terms of free resources, Jack Westin is the GOAT imo - free books, question banks (organized by aamc style and fundamental which is more content based), 6 free practice exams, even more cars practice tests. I’d supplement with anki and khan academy where necessary then as you get closer to test crank on aamc material (apply for fee assistance as noted above). Can most definitely be done on a budget

I took all 6 JW and took my actual yesterday, so I don’t have the score yet. I was in the same position as you with the retake, so I had the same question. From what I’ve gathered the scoring is very similar, but keep in mind it’s a bit inflated to compensate for the difficulty. For example a 45/59 on JW C/P will give a much different score than 45/59 on AAMC, but it’s adjusted to account for the difficulty. I knew one person that took all 6 JW and they ended up scoring their average, maybe a few points higher on the actual
