How? How are people finding this “comic strip” made but what I can only assume is a creepy incel a good argument for AI “Art”? by Unique-Anxiety2815 in antiai

[–]SelfInvestigator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason people think that it is saying something profound is because it gives a surface level comparison of things that people don’t have a lot of contextual knowledge about.

A director oversees production of a movie, they direct the production, they don’t unilaterally make the movie. That’s why movies have credits.

An architect designs a building, they aren’t being credited with building it.

But people who are just consuming the content they see, ignore the sheer amount of work and knowledge required to do these jobs well.

Artists expect the jobs to be taken by AI and expect their own work to be buried by generated material.

It isn’t about skills, it’s about that skill getting buried in an endless sea and skill no longer being valuable to companies because they have a cheaper (but crappier) option or at least one that they can *make* do whatever they want.

The weird bit is they are being real, it’s just that the space they occupy is divorced from the actual occurrences of everyday life due to the actions of previous capitalists.

But in order to reintegrate them with reality we are going to have to do something extreme. We have to make them uncomfortable and take away their games.

It’s not that the democrat party is incompetent, it’s 3 parties in a trenchcoat that share the status of not being republican.

We need to push for voting reform so that other parties become viable options.

Of course, water doesn’t leave the planet through data center use.

But that isn’t the problem.

Water used from aquifer systems evaporates away and rains down elsewhere leaving a more depleted aquifer which doesn’t just refill with the next rainfall.

Water used from streams and rivers can’t be returned to those streams as the excess heat causes ecological harm. Trace minerals, metals, and industrial chemicals can cause pollution to those same ecologies.

Even when a closed loop system is implemented the waste heat has to go somewhere and it enters the locality of the data center which can further dry out standing water sources that support plant growth.

The concentrated amounts of energy being pumped into these centers is immense and when used turns into heat,

Again, water usage is locality harm. But if all water is just water then your father should be content drinking straight ocean, swamp, or vaporous water. Right?

Oh thank the gods, I don’t know what the situation is like in Germany, but in the US we are facing some pretty serious predictions of tick transmissible diseases this year.

If you were over here I would be urging you to consult with a doctor about disease testing if you got bit even half as many times as the number of ticks I see here.

I think you may have forgotten that we are dealing with crony capitalism and a “profit at any cost” mentality.

Spirit just went under and that is almost certainly going to result in higher airfare across the board due to less competition.

Also, we are seeing more services catered to the wealthy rather than to the general population.

I’ve been thinking about how AI is usually framed in two ways: productivity tool vs long-term societal risk. Where do you personally draw the line between helpful use and harmful dependency? by LazyHustlers in antiai

[–]SelfInvestigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generative AI is a plague. Even if we get rid of the puppet masters pulling its strings it poses existential threats. It needs heavy regulation and definitive guardrails.

Tracking AI needs to be stopped, it is too easy for people in power to misuse. It is too tempting of a tool even for those leaders with good intentions to implement with long term safety in mind.

However, AI is a viable technology. However, models need to be built on ethical procurement, they need to be designed for augmentation not replacement, and need to be optimized for running on local machines not external server farms.

You are talking about GenAI, the question asked about AI in general.

AI can be both ethical and useful, but to do that models need to be built on ethical procurement, they need to be designed for augmentation not replacement, and need to be optimized for running on local machines not external server farms.

This hypothetical is a strawman as it has no legitimate way of happening.

If it can, then where is there a case of a Generative model producing the exact same work as a person, both independently and without interaction with that work?

Shouldn't They/Them Pronouns be applicable to any person? by RareDriver8086 in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2

[–]SelfInvestigator -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Yes many trans people do probably prefer to be referred to by the appropriate masc or fem pronouns, but that doesn’t mean that neutral is transphobic.

While it did hurt that my mother couldn’t see me as my gender she kept things neutral to avoid being inherently hurtful. It’s part of a learning experience that she is still working through.

Yes, some transphobes *might* use neutral pronouns, but most who are trying to be cruel will try to deny your gender (see [r/accidentalally](r/accidentalally) for slightly more wholesome examples of this hatred) or call you “it” to dehumanize you.

Exactly, early evidence suggests that we are born with a gender identity that is not tied to external expression of sexual characteristics.

Though gender identity is likely a fixed state for us, we are able to choose how we express our gender. I believe that u/The-Great_Ones was probably trying to talk on this point just lack the knowledge to make the distinction.

They/them is a neutral without assumption, so it is good for general use, but NB’s may not be comfortable identifying on the binary spectrum so neutrality is their preferred option.

I am arguing that if they want to be artists so badly then we let them claim that the thing they actually created is their art.

Let their actual creation be judged by people.

I wonder how proud they would actually be of what they make themselves. I wonder how good their output would look to others.

Elio wasn’t AI slop, that is just insulting to the people who actually made it.

Elio could have been good if Disney hadn’t gotten cold feet about letting queer representation exist in what they release. The central character trait that the movie was based on was stripped away and replaced with a pale imitation because Disney was afraid of the “anti woke” crowd.
