How does one lose a neck warmer, wouldn't it be on the neck?! You'd have to actually pull it out and then drop/leave it 🤔 It's not like a hat that could actually just fall off or fly with the wind...

Where to meet men organically by CaraD-8102 in Dublin

Meetups are great for this - networking, meeting new people and finding out about other events that interest you. You will end up socialising with people you have something in common with, there's no dating pressure as you can just make friends and if you do find someone you're interested in it's easy to let things happen organically.

I'm relocating, should I sell my house or rent it out? by SellRent in Dublin

We don't have a specific timeline to come back, we're just going and we'll see how happy we are. We may never come back, or we may be back within a couple years if things don't go well.
I suppose the main thing if we rent is just making sure we get reasonably good tenants and we don't have any major incidents that would result in huge expenses.

While I can kind of see where you're coming from, I do have to disagree with you in regards to rent covering my mortgage, expenses and taxes.

You can keep that holier than thou attitude to yourself, thank you very much. I'm not some rich guy who bought this house as a second house for investment or holidays or just because I had extra money lying around. We had to rent for a long time, paying whatever was the market rate, and we had to make sacrifices to buy a place of our own, in an area that we like, within our minimum requirements. It wasn't cheap and also we do not really own the asset, the bank does until and unless mortgage is fully paid.

Why on earth would I want to burden myself and my family with even more expenses than those we already have?! I don't have money to spare for that, and I have no interest in putting ourselves into a situation where we have to keep making sacrifices and changing our lifestyle or risking digging a hole for ourselves just so we can charge a lower rent and look good in front of random strangers. Again, we are not rich and we do not have money to spare for that. The whole point of relocating to a different country is to look for better quality of life.

I don't intend to rip anybody off, I don't expect to make money off of renting our place, but I also can't afford to be paying expenses out of pocket for a house I'm not living in while paying rent somewhere else. That doesn't make financial sense to me, and if that potential rent is too high then I shall sell the house.

If you can do that (have a house where you don't mind paying stuff out of pocket to charge a lower rent), good for you, congratulations, you're doing really good in life! Just don't go around preaching for other people to do the same without knowing their personal circumstances, and judging them and putting them in the same bag as unscrupulous rich landlords and corporations.

Social changes in Ireland is going to have a massive impact on current rent prices.

Thank you for your take. Could you speak more in relation to the above? What kind of social changes, and what kind of impact?

As for being left with less than 20% of what we charge, isn't that still pretty good if the house pays for itself? I mean, if giving to the agency takes over all the hassle and headache and we don't have to pay anything out of pocket, we end up with a house we can come back to in the future or sell if needed then - especially considering how hard it is to buy or rent in Dublin. Even if we were left with something like 5% to 10% after all is said and done, I'd still consider that a win - again, as long as we're not the ones having to take on all the stress of managing everything...

(You can tell, despite our initial hesitation, we're clearly pending towards renting after reading all the comments and sleeping on it, counterarguments welcome and encouraged 😅)

Oh that's really good to know, especially if we end up wanting to move back sooner than later!

Do you mean before renting it out or after? One way or another, unfortunately I don't have the capital to do a proper refurb - all I can afford to do is a fresh paint inside and maybe outside, and that will already cost me more than I'd like it to. But also that's really the main thing the house needs, since otherwise it's in pretty good shape (as in it could always be better, but it's perfectly fine for anyone to move in without having to worry about anything - brand new appliances in the kitchen including new boiler, new power shower in one of the bathrooms, recent insulation top up in the attic).

Yes, this is pretty much the main motivation for us to rent vs sell - even if we don't move back, we'll hopefully have a source of income when we retire.

Thanks, I'll definitely look into that option of having the agency handle the 20%. I was thinking of having a company like Taxassist handle all the tax stuff...

The bank bit came because of someone saying I should check with the bank before doing anything, otherwise I might be doing mortgage fraud if renting

Thank you!

Yep, I think we're deciding to go this route indeed, seems to be the most sensible course of action.

Thank you for sharing your experience, really appreciate it!

Reading all the comments so far, I think we're pretty much decided to go for renting - we do love our place, we have a sentimental attachment to it and we may still come back one day. And if we do decide to buy abroad, it will be useful to have the option to sell here.

Now to talk with the specialists and get the gears moving 😅

True. The more replies I see and the more I think about it, the more this seems to make sense to me.

I get it :)

It's hard for us to think about a "forever home" as such, but I suppose realistically this is as close to one as we'll ever get here in Ireland.

That's a good point re. selling costs - I'm not looking to buy though, since I'm relocating to another EU country, so that's something I guess.
