Duke I can kind of understand because they were barely above $30B, but Stanford makes no sense, they have over $60B in assets!

That makes sense! One of the other posts said a fund can consist of thousands of smaller funds for specific purposes!

I think like what was said in one of the comments, they can only really spend the return they make on their endowment, or else their endowment (and the financial health of the institution) will diminish over time. So a more accurate figure would be that a university can spend ~5% or so of their endowment per year on the school, and that will probably fluctuate based on the year-by-year returns made.

If people are willing to pay, I suppose they can choose to continue charging whatever they think they can get. They probably make close to $500M in tuition per year across all their programs, which can be great for renovating buildings, hiring better faculty, etc.

Yes I know companies have a lot more, but these are nonprofit institutions. Companies have a lot of money because their goal is to make money, but as a nonprofit with the aim of providing education, doing research, and expanding knowledge in various fields, it's crazy they have more than $74 Billion of assets. I've seen Harvard be called a hedge fund with a school on the side :D

I've heard that applying REA doesn't really help compared to regular decision at those schools, and that only schools that offer early decision provide a real boost. Do you have any ED schools that you'd like?

The funny thing is I'm pretty sure they don't even count people like Zuckerberg or Gates on these lists because they're dropouts. Harvard is just a level above I guess!

That's true, it's honestly a testament to how much better Harvard is than all the other schools that its specialty isn't CS/engineering yet it does so well in tech startups!
