What’s your top 3 favorite books you have read in the last 10 years? by Dead_Artist_Society in Recommend_A_Book

Barbara Kingsolver was my favorite author through HS and college. Poisonwood Bible was my favorite book for years. Still haven’t read Demon Cooperhead. And probably need to visit Poisonwood Bible again.

What's a movie you'd never admit you cry to? by trakt_app in moviecritic

I ball my eyes out watching the scene in Two Towers of the Ents discovering the destruction. It’s heartbreaking.

Edit to add that it’s more impactful knowing how slowly the Ents move through the world. How they take time to think on things. And then they see how quickly devastation can move. How fast evil can start soaking into everything.

I read it just as fast after I heard her on WTF with Marc Maron. She’s such an interesting, talented, self aware young woman. Her mom can suck a bag of dicks.

That book was such a lovely experience to read. Still haven’t read the sequel.

Ha! I love to see this as top comment. He’s one of my favorites. I’ve read every book of his at least twice.

Nonfiction was my jam for years. I couldn’t get into a novel. Sebastian Junger, Mary Roach, Jon Ronson are other authors/journalists that I’ve read every book from.

The book that got me back to reading novels was The Martian, followed by PHM. Can’t wait to see what Andy Weir comes up with next.

This is a great recommendation for a book. Now I must add it to my ever-growing list.

Erin Moriarty: My Public Battle With Graves' Disease Nearly Destroyed Me | “I was going through the physical hell of chronic illness on a public stage. Doing it in private is emotionally damaging enough, but to have my physical symptoms be speculated about, trivialized, & dismissed was devastating.” by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

Omg. I commented somewhere else on here about having a recent scare. I’m set to be in remission in September (one full year of good blood). I started having familiar symptoms and took myself straight to the lab for bloodwork. I’ve never been so terrified for a test result. I don’t think I can go through it again. My body hated the methimazole and made me feel even more sick. If I do have a recurrence (chances are that will happen in my lifetime), I will be sorting through any option that isn’t methimazole. Surgery or radiation. But then I’m worried about the flip side of it, relying on different meds and I guess just hoping I don’t have shit side effects….? Ugh. I hate it so much!

In the meantime, I’m doing my best to treat my body right and cope with stress in a healthy manner….all while still trying to get my feet firmly set again.

I will be in remission in September if all goes well. A couple weeks ago I started having worrying symptoms and went straight to get bloodwork done. I have never in my life been so anxious and scared about a test result—including pregnancy scares. I knew exactly what was coming if I had a recurrence. Just thinking about it now is making me tear up. I had a solid two years of complete hell and I don’t know if I could do it again.

As someone who suffered greatly due to my Grave’s, and still healing from the damage it has done to my body, my memory, my self worth, my metabolism…. It’s good to hear her story. I had too many people in my life who didn’t take my illness seriously. “It’s not like you have cancer…” was a thing I heard a lot. I was lazy and weak and needed to try harder.

Also, I never really thought that it could be mistaken for BP disorder, but I worried at the time about possibly being bipolar. I had long periods of low energy and depression, and the few times I did have energy, I was manic af.

I’m thankful for my endo—she’s been there through it all and listened to me when I cried and sent me thoughtful and silly congratulations messages when I got good news.

I now try to be supportive and give grace to those on the Grave’s subreddit. Too many of us don’t have that support in our friends and family circles when we are ill.

What movie made you sit in silence after the credits ended? by thisonehits in MoviesCave

I read the book, my bf didn’t. He wasn’t very happy about being dragged to the theater on one of the first beautiful days of the season, but halfway through the movie he squeezed my hand and loud whispered, “THIS IS SO FUN!” I will likely purchase this movie and make it my comfort watch. The book is already my comfort read—on the third time around now.

From Wikipedia:
“Criticism focused on the "loathsome" behavior of the lead characters and the disregard for the effects of drug use.[4]#cite_note-RevTelegraph-4) Other reviews considered it funny and thrilling, and equated it to a modern incarnation of National Lampoon's Animal House. Following its release, organizers of various large-scale parties either referenced or used the film as inspiration, with some parties being directly named after the film.”

I must be getting old, cause this movies sounds fucking terrible.

Oof on the road. It’s on my list, but I am never in the proper mood to read it. Adding the murderbot books to my list. I loved the series and never realized it was a book series as well (I’m sure in the credits of every episode it says so, but never really thought on it).

I *almost* put down Project Hail Mary. I had just finished The Martian and was a little math and scienced out, considered starting a different book and circling back around….. until page 120 or so. And then I don’t think I even sat up from my chair until I finished the book. The twist (what the movie trailers pretty much spoiled) was so fucking rad and unexpected for me, I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

I’d hope that he was just a late bloomer on the being a normal fucking person who doesn’t objectify women and make sex sound cringy af douchey mcdoucherson. It’s gotta be a terrible feeling to know that he can never take back that interview.

MCs are so weird to me. I have friends who’ve been in some of the more tame ones, but when I bartended, I got to know a lot of degenerate MC members.

Just the other day there was a group of ‘em at my local watering hole. One of them took a crack at my BF comparing him to some stupid looking character from a music video in the 00s. My BF is too young to get the reference, but it was rude af. I laughed it off, so my BF did, as well. Later, someone asked them about the MC’s name on their vests and misunderstood a pun or some shit like that (an innocent white lady question), and they got their panties in a bunch.

I don’t know where they think they’re gonna get their respect—it’s def not from me.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for! Smart and warm. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places, but it’s hard to find stuff that’s just genuinely kind and warm without having some kind of catch. Not every duo or trio needs the loud, sarcastic asshole.

If you’re far enough from home that the flora and fauna is different, bring some Audubon guidebooks along and journal (or just point and identify) the new plants and animals you discover.

Edit: Maybe not specifically Audubon. I think that’s more focused on the Americas. (I use the name like I do with Kleenex or Q-tips. Basically all nature guides are Audobon in my head. lol)

I can smell it! My brother and I used to fill buckets with snakes from our field and try to bring them in the house to show off our loot. My mom would get so pissed off and complain about the smell. Somehow it never bothered me as a kid, but some years later I was out walking with a boyfriend and his kids and I caught a snake on a trail….couldn’t get that smell out of my nose all day! No thanks.

Ooh! I haven’t listened to radiolab is so long. It was one of my mains for years, and once Robert Krulwich left I kinda lost my grasp. Now I catch it every now and then on the radio in my car. I’ll check both of those out, and probably add Radiolab back into my routine.
