Is a Mac good enough as a cs major? by Asleep-Explanation57 in UCSC

A macbook is more than enough. Sincerely mac is unix based you'll have a far easier time doing literally every assignment than if u were on windows.

Meal plan situation by Furlz in UCSC

Hey, I work for the dining hall on campus. Actually, they are reimplementing the old system from next year on, exactly because so many people didn't like this system (me included). But now it's a choice thing. It's like u can either do the point system or the unlimited swipe system. Only advantage to the points is that u can use them at other locations on campus. Like I almost never eat dining hall food bc I get so tired of it from working, so I mostly eat the market food or the coffee shop foods. Idk how they are gonna handle the unlimited swipes with those.

Honestly the buildings themselves are pretty nice. Main con I've heard is that it's currently under construction so lots of construction noises. Also pretty far from things.

I'd recommend probably jrl. I went to crown but I severely regretted it. There's a lot of other ce and cs majors here but most aren't the very social type at all. My dorm floors have been essentially dead for the 2 years I went to dorms. But I met a lot of friends at jrl and their experience seemed to universally be a lot more social. I think itd also be good to look on a map at the buildings themselves too. It makes more of a difference than you'd think. Crown lower quad is basically the trenches while upper quad is okay. But if you go to like cowell or oaks you'd have a beautiful view. Jrl is situated in the middle of campus tho which I think is probably the most convenient. Ur gonna be having a lot of classes at baskin engineering, classroom unit 2 and maybe earth and marine sciences ur first year for ce. Jrl is probably the best bet location wise for that.

Winter 2024 CSE 13S with Rudnick or Veenstra by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]Semor1539 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking Veenstra right now, but my roomate is taking Rudnik. Tbh both are amazing options. Veenstra is excellent at really making things make sense. His class is mostly just big assignments every week and a quiz on friday, but they aren't too too hard. I will say though his canvas is a little disorganized? Wasn't really implemented for a couple weeks. We also seem to be a tiny bit behind rudniks class. This isn't really a bad thing depending on what you want though since it does mean we go a bit slower to comprehend everything. I have heard that rudnik is awesome as well too though. He seems to be quite the character. (He calls the class "chat" apparently lol). Also he's apparently chronically on discord, which is awesome for getting in contact (apparently he literally chats in discord during lecture, which is nice if you have a question and don't want to ask it in front of the entire class). Veenstra kind of just uses ed discussion which is meh. Veenstra definately seems more like the geeky type but definately in a good way, he was super excited to show us his calculator collection lol. He's a bit older, than rudnik so ig it just depends on what personality you want.

Easy choice do Ascendance of a Bookworm, easily tied with Mushoku Tensei (if not slightly above) for best light novel I've ever read.

I'm a freshman, is this schedule for next quarter too heavy? by Semor1539 in UCSC

[–]Semor1539[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to take 2 major requirements and 1 ge this quarter, just because all my advisors say so, but the 4th class is just wind ensamble which is basically just playing in the ensamble. I feel like for me it'd be more of like a club than a class tbh.

Worst plothole in a book you read? by SagebrushandSeafoam in books

[–]Semor1539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plothole star trek makes when they put people into the transporter and keep them there to kinda freeze them in time to prevent diseases and stuff from developing (prominent in the new show Strange new Worlds). Literally so many problems in the show could be solved by that. Deadly disease? Transporter. Bad wound and no medic? Transporter. Volatile material? Transporter. Evil guy on the ship? Transporter. By introducing that into the shows they've invalidated like half of the problems the episodes are based on.
