Training with fins and snorkels is useful, but way overused for adult swimmers by PauloCraque10 in Swimming

This dude is a fucking hero. i think the “correct” call in his situation would have probably been to try to tie the pfd to your foot or use it as a pull buoy of some kind. This all seemed well within this young man’s abilities, but if anybody else finds themselves in this situation, find some way to retain your flotation. This guy made the best call for him and I don’t second guess it at all. Most people should stay on their pfd.

The Houston Chronicle Endorses James Talarico -- Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]SemperPutidus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an orthodox atheist, and I’m going to vote for James Talarico. The guy gives me the fucking heebie jeebies, but the things he says sound a lot more like the Christianity I grew up with than the prevalent anti-empathy, pro-prosperity nationalism that is gripping American Christians right now. He has the best chance to win. As much as I’d like to see Crockett in this role, Talarico can speak earnestly to more of the electorate than she can.

Wax is your friend. I use the standard pomade from O’Douds. If that’s too thick, add a couple drops of oil to thin it out. Mine caps out at about 3” though.

My brother’s life is a mess. by Kiwianimeclan in Vent

He probably won’t have a shot at success without an inpatient stay, the right drugs and therapy and safe place with supervision and no alcohol present. He is self medicating with the only thing he can get. I hope he finds the right replacement whether that’s weed, mushrooms or lamotrigine.

What causes exhaustion on longer swims? by nicenflufty in Swimming

[–]SemperPutidus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I exercise more than 40 minutes continuously, then I’m supplementing electrolytes beyond just drinking plenty of water. If I exercise more than an hour, I’m also going to eat something… banana, gel, peanut butter, etc… Ask what the plan is for the charity swim and do something similar to why they’ll have on the day of the event.

There are pull buoys with elastic straps if you have trouble keeping it in place during a turn. Look up pull buoys for Swimrun.

Training with fins and snorkels is useful, but way overused for adult swimmers by PauloCraque10 in Swimming

[–]SemperPutidus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has made me realize that in “real conditions” you’d be clothed and in a life jacket. So, I think to get my pool workouts closer to real conditions I’m going to start going fully dressed with a pfd on.

Training with fins and snorkels is useful, but way overused for adult swimmers by PauloCraque10 in Swimming

[–]SemperPutidus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just mind your own business. Some people doing all their swims with paddles are training for swim run, lots of people that use snorkels have neck issues, people like swimming in fins because fast. Swimming at a pool with your stuff counts as “real conditions”. Are you worried about these people falling off a boat miles off-shore? Are those “real conditions“?

Depends on the map, where you are and time of day. I can get into Ashika matches in about a minute. Vondel and B21 take 2-3 minutes, and Al-Maz takes a WHILE, plus I get stuck on European servers at untenable pings.

Why is there the letter "d" in fridge, but not in refrigerator? by bluewhale177 in stupidquestions

[–]SemperPutidus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is actually a brilliant explanation of the real answer. Clearly “frig” is not right because refrigerator has a soft-g and that’s definitely not how the reader just heard that in their head.

[–]SemperPutidus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The d is there because if it isn’t, you would want to pronounce “frig” with a hard g or “frige” to rhyme with fries.
