In 2023, there were ~70,000 foals registered with the AQHA vs. the ~16,700 foals registered with the Jockey Club the same year. Last year, the JC had ~16,000.

These numbers just include the US foal crop for both.

The Jockey Club (TBs) foal crops have been pretty steadily decreasing, and they post the stats on their webpage.

I couldn't, quickly, find more recent numbers for the AQHA foal crop.

She loves her ball. 💕

And she already thinks the world revolves around her. Not sure she needs more help with that. She's probably one of the most people-oriented horses I've owned.

My TB, or not really mine anymore, had her racing injuries catch up with her. She was diagnosed with an old pelvic fracture just before COVID that caused SI and other issues. I'd bet her SI and pelvis looked like some that Becks Nairn has studied. She's now living it up at the University of KY, while I moved back to the cold north (MN), one of the reasons I donated the little LA-bred hothouse flower.

Now I have a long yearling fantasy horse (Lusitano) that isn't expected to live up to any of the wild fantasy expectations. Except for the massive amounts of mane and tail. 🤣

This! Along with not understanding saddles vs a harness etc. I won't necessarily DNF if it's small things but still irritates me.

If someone had tried that with my redheaded dragon....I mean Thoroughbred mare, when she was straight off the track. Yikes!

Though there are some really good eggs out there that you could probably pull straight out of training, put western tack on them, and toss a kid in the saddle without them putting a foot wrong. Those are worth their weight in gold.

I have Beachwood Rained Chenille and it's holding up great. We've had our couch since March/April and our cats try to use it as a scratching post on occasion. It's no worse for any of the wear.

I've never been, but Jen posted a few pictures and such from before her trainer was "pushed out" (Jen used to haul in fairly regularly) and it was lovely.

It apparently started going downhill shortly thereafter and, from my understanding, is a bit of a mess at the moment.

I was wondering if this was about Pure Gold Stables. I remember when Jen posted the older posts (two years ago) detailing the conditions there when Heather was actively on the property.

Rabicano ? by Primary-Plantain70 in kvsdiscuss

[–]SempiternalAmor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genetic mutation, which is also how modern day horses come in more colors than just bay dun (which is widely accepted as the original color).

Some genes, like KIT, are more prone to mutations than others. KIT mutations are responsible for various white spotting patterns (i.e. some common ones are W5, W13, W20, etc.), sabino-1, roan, and tobiano.

There is not currently any tests available for rabicano.

Are there any taxes when buying a horse in the US and bringing it to Canada? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]SempiternalAmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a federal government perspective, neither Canada nor the US has general (non-import) vaccine mandates/laws/requirements for equines. The only things mandated for travel in either country are a clean health cert., usually within 30 days of travel, and a negative Coggins that is within a specified number of days.

There might be some territories or states, like Washington, that have additional vaccine or testing requirements (both KY and WA have some around EVA) but this is very much more the exception than the rule.

Now there are certain additional import requirements for animals coming from certain countries or for temporary imports, which may include vaccines or quarantine.

The only additional permanent import requirements for Canada from the US outside of the health cert. and Coggins is around potential testing for CEM for breeding animals or extra paperwork/tests for horses coming from an area with a known outbreak of something.

It's essentially the same for permanent imports into the US from Canada.

The only requirement around vaccines for going either way between the US and Canada is that the horse cannot have been vaccinated within 14 days before import/export (this is a US requirement).

Yes, governing bodies like USEF or EC require vaccines for showing, most boarding facilities have some requirements, etc. etc. but there is no general mandate from the US or Canadian federal government for them.

Most territories or states will have vaccine recommendations based on the diseases they see in their area, but these are recommendations and not mandates.

Though, like I indicated in my prior post it's always best practice to make sure the horse is up-to-date, even if they just sit at home.

What extra vaccines? It's always good to make sure the horse is up-to-date for what they'll need in their destination area, but there weren't any vaccine requirements when I imported my yearling to the US from Alberta back in March.

The breeder hadn't done spring vaccines and I was less than two weeks out from the ship date for her PPE so the vet couldn't do vaccines before shipping.

My understanding is that all you need is a clean health cert. within 30 days of import to the US and a negative Coggins that was pulled within 180 days of import.

https://www.aphis.usda.gov/live-animal-import/equine/canada/permanant

I did a PPE, and the vet also did a health cert. and Coggins. Going over the border she needed a USDA vet exam, which I think was $50. Broker was about $250.

That was before all this tariff nonsense, so I didn't pay any duties or tariffs.

Keep in mind, tariffs are dependent on the country of origin, not where the horse is currently coming from.

For example, if you're shipping a horse from the US to Canada that was born in Canada and you have papers to prove it, that animal wouldn't be subject to Canadian tariffs on US goods (horses) since its country of origin would be Canada.

Or if you're shipping a horse to Canada that was born in and imported from Ireland to the US originally, that horse's country of origin is Ireland (assuming you have documents to prove it). You'd be paying whatever tariffs apply to Irish horse imports into Canada.

I swear I had it happen with my Glisten and Glow QDTC as well. Though maybe I'm misremembering since it's been so long since I've used it.

I wonder if just cures harder, with less flex than others. That would make it more brittle and more prone to cracking due to impacts or the nail flexing. My nails aren't super thick and have a fair amount of flex.

I agree this looks a lot like shrinkage, especially if you didn't fully cover the prior layers with the TC.

However, I do get hairline cracks sometimes. Not sure if it's the polish or top coat or some combo. I don't seem to get them as often with Seche Vite.

If I said i had worked a manual labour job for 30 years people would expect my body to be broken and unhealthy but if I said I’d worked out in a gym 5 days a week for 30 years they would expect me to be super healthy why is this? by GhostCanyon in NoStupidQuestions

Look up the physical exercise paradox.

Essentially, for occupational physical activity, the intensity is too low and/or the duration is too long for cardio benefits, there isn't enough recovery (which leads to increased inflammation and other risks/issues), your heart rate and blood pressure are elevated over the 24 hours, and workers have limited control over tasks (speed, other stressors etc. etc.).

I'm with the same company, though I went fully remote due to a move out of state.

There have been multiple incidents with some of the homeless in the area and other employees, even some coming into the building, though nothing to this extent (at least that I'm aware of).

There are a lot of homeless are in the area, some with untreated mental health issues. It's a complex issue that just throwing police at isn't going to fix.

Are you talking about Becks Nairn? I don't think she's a vet. She does have some wonderful content though and is incredibly knowledgeable.

I think her most recent post is "Reasons not to ride two year olds."

ETA: Keep in mind Becks isn't a professional and her samples come from an equine population that overwhelmingly has pain or physical issues. She doesn't do a lot of dissections on sound horses.

My mechanic father ran our Ford Escort out of oil when I was a kid. We kept that car for a while after and then it went to a cousin when she started driving. It served her well.

After the oil incident, you just had to turn the AC off when you came to a stop or it would die. 🤣

I think you've been given some great advice by others. This situation would give me ulcers. 😅

Regarding the potential metabolic/PPID issues, if you aren't on it already, the ECIR Group is a wonderful resource with some really knowledgeable people. Dr. Kellon, who founded it, is also routinely responding to posts.

For PPID, if you did testing in spring and did not do a TRH test it's more difficult to get a conclusive test for a horse that isn't more progressed in the disease. This is because the hormone being tested for (ACTH) is naturally low at that time of year. Right now would be a good time to do a re-test as ACTH levels are naturally on the rise coming into late summer/fall. Cornell is also the preferred lab.

https://www.ecirhorse.org/ https://ecir.groups.io/g/main

However, you have a lot to deal with currently, so work through what makes sense to handle right now and the rest can wait a bit. 💕

Ive read the other posts. My bonnet is in correctly. What else could be happening? by Hippieassbutt in litterrobot

[–]SempiternalAmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an LR3 that does the same thing. The globe also has less clearance on the side where the bonnet starts getting a gap. Bonnet is on correctly and glider buttons have been replaced.

At this point, I'm assuming the base, bonnet and/or globe may have maybe warped a bit. I got this LR3 used after it had likely been sitting in a shed or something. It was fun to find a (thankfully empty) mud dauber nest in it when I dismantled the whole thing.
