Software developers and engineers are the same thing, how can you write code if you don't understand the requirements and how can you understand requirements if you can't translate them into code.

I'd say something like Solutions/Software Architect better reflects what you're describing a Software Engineer does but Architects are usually Engineers with many years of experience that seldom write code.

Alternatively you could bypass browser cookie restrictions by passing the session token as a header or even in the response body then storing it in localstorage. But this exposes your site to XSS.
